For the last couple of months, rumours have been circulating that Brazilian gymnast
Rebeca Andrade was working on upgrading her vaults for the upcoming Paris Games.
In a recent video shared by the Brazilian Olympic Committee, it has been confirmed
that the two-time world vault champion is training a triple-twisting Yurchenko,
which is not yet featured in the code of points. It consists of a round-off onto the springboard,
followed by a back handspring onto the table, and a salto backward laid out with three full
rotations. Following the technical committee's logic of awarding four-tenths for each half-twist,
this vault would receive a 5.8 start value, four-tenths higher than the Aminar.
The reigning Olympic champion will be looking forward to defending her title in Paris,
so this might be a much-needed upgrade in order to do so,
since she'll most likely be going against Simone Biles' Yurchenko double pike
in the vault final. If successfully submitted,
this would become Rebeca's first eponymous skill in the rulebook of the discipline.
The triple-twisting Yurchenko has been trained by Simone Biles herself,
and was actually submitted by North Korea's Hong Yun-jong at the Rio Games in 2016.
However, she failed to land it, and therefore the skill remains out of the code of points.
Rebeca had also trained this vault in the past, but given that she underwent three knee surgeries
throughout her career and now avoids major twisting elements that can lead to under-rotated landings,
it seemed unrealistic for her to perform it in competition. It will be extremely challenging
to get the last half-twist around, but it looks like the Olympic gold medalist is willing to
take the risk in order to defend her title, and might even stamp her name in the code of points
forever in the process. Do you think the Brazilian gymnast
will debut this vault at the Paris Games?
