NEW SKILL ALERT 🚨 Meet the Olfati

A new, incredible vault has been added to the Men's Artistic Gymnastics Code of Points following the 2025 Asian Championships held in South Korea. During the qualification round, Mahdi Ulfati of Iran became the first gymnast to land an outstanding, full-twisting Yurchenko double tuck in competition. Despite a low-chested landing and a big step forward which made him go out of bounds, the Iranian athlete managed to hold on which was enough for it to be considered a successful performance by the technical committee. The Ulfati has now joined the table of elements with a 5.6 start value and consists of a round-off back handspring onto the table followed by two somersaults in a tucked position with a full twist. This is Mahdi's first eponymous skill in the rulebook of the discipline. In late 2023, the one and only Simone Biles shared a clip attempting this jaw-dropping vault onto the pit which sparked excitement among fans about the possibility of seeing it in competition one day. As of 2025, however, no female gymnast has performed it and it doesn't look like that will change any time soon. But one thing Simone and Mahdi have in common is the ability to perform an amazing Yurchenko double pike, a vault only a handful have dared to try. It will be interesting to see if the Iranian gymnast is ready to make the Ulfati his main vault moving forward or will go back to performing the young way on a consistent basis. Nonetheless, he has already accomplished something unprecedented and in the process immortalized his name in gymnastics history.
