This is the 18th year of the annual fundraising party on Lake Nokomis.
biggest polar plunge in the Twin Cities every year and this year stands to set
even a new record. Sammy Salina live at Lake Nokomis where a bunch of great
people are getting to jump in some greatly cold water for a good cause.
Hi Sammy. Hi Chris. I know you know how cold this is but there are so many
awesome people out here taking the plunge and one of them who is about to
do it Mark Kelsey a Special Olympics Minnesota coach and the reason why I'm
holding the mic is because he said a few minutes ago I'm going to do it I'm
going to take the plunge why is that important to you Mark? Oh it raises a
ton of money for the Special Olympics of Minnesota for our team specifically part
of what we raise goes right directly to our team so we have first-class uniforms
first-class facilities it's very important to us. Yeah absolutely I don't
want to I don't want to get this mic away that's why I'm holding it and
you're about to take the plunge if that's not impressive enough check out
his footwear absolutely just feet in the sand that's amazing why don't you go
ahead and do that Mark because I know that's that's what the viewers want to see yeah
go for it all right let's do it all right so we're gonna follow Mark who is
sprinting and and we're getting our feet wet a little bit Jack just decided that's
okay he's gonna do it all right all right we got a whole group all right
Jack's gonna be very careful so that way he doesn't get into the cold plunge
himself he's doing a great job you're doing a great job Jack and Mark of
course and of course this is a safe event they're ready they're gonna do it
they're gonna do it
so as you can see this is the polar plunge at Lake Nokomis so much fun over
happening over here it's there's also a dog on the dock it's madness it's
craziness and it's for a good cause they're raising the money of course for
Special Olympics Minnesota and thousands of people have signed up it's
a record-breaking year and you can still sign up which is amazing if you get here
before one you can take the plunge and you might be like Sammy there's no snow
on the beach is it really a polar plunge you saw how cold those folks were right
I mean it's cold water 35 degrees and I think a lot of us are kind of itching
for some winter here right we want to get a little taste of winter and you can
do that and what's amazing it's a little bit of a cheat is that you get
out and it's gonna be you know 40 50 60 degrees so not too bad and you can still
say that you've done the polar plunge which is amazing and I'm out of breath
because I ran down and so many things to comment on there we go hey do it first
of all it's so cold the dog didn't even jump okay that's how cold is I bet it's
like 40 degree water maybe second of all you know how hard it is to run with a
camera Jack congratulations my friend you didn't go in the water and you made
the shot yeah that's cold Sammy you've been christened that is your first
Saturday morning live shot and you nailed it out of the park let's go
Special Olympics all right a lot more to come this Saturday morning coming up
