MySQL 8.4 is the version this whole course is built on. So before we touch a single index, let's be clear about what kind of release 8.4 is, how long it is supported, and why so many teams are moving to it right now. In 2023, Oracle split MySQL into two tracks, long-term support releases, called LTS, and innovation releases. The first innovation release was 8.1. In July 2023, then came 8.2 and 8.3, and in April 2024, that work was rolled up into the first LTS of the new model, MySQL 8.4. The two tracks behave very differently, and Innovation Release can add features, remove features, and change behavior, and it is supported only until the next Innovation Release. an LTS release. is the opposite. After it ships, it receives fixes only. No feature removals and no surprise behavior changes. And LTS support is long. Five years of premier support plus three years of extended support. For MySQL 8.4, that means premier support until April 2029 and extended support until April 2032. Now, the urgent part. On the 21st of April, 2026, MySQL 8.0 moved to sustaining support. The last 8.0 release, 8.0.46, shipped that same day. From now on, there are no new bug fixes and no new security patches. If 8.0 is still running in production, every new vulnerability is a risk you carry yourself. On that same day, MySQL 9.7 became the next LTS. So why does this course teach 8.4? Because the supported upgrade path goes from one LTS to the next. Your 8.0 servers move to 8.4 first. And with support until 2032, 8.4 will be the workhorse in many companies for years. Everything you learn here about indexes and the optimizer carries forward to 9.7 so what does 8.4 bring compared with 8.0 part of it arrived in the innovation releases mysql 8.1 added explain into which saves a json plan into a user variable mysql 8.3 added version 2 of the json explain format 8.0 never received these So they are new to anyone upgrading from it. Other changes are genuinely new in 8.4. Histograms can now update themselves automatically whenever the table's statistics are refreshed. And 8.4 changed a group of InnoDB defaults. The adaptive hash index is now off. Change buffering is now set to none. And the I/O capacity and the flush method. have changed too. Two cautions before we go on. First, 8.4 is not simply a faster 8.0. Change defaults, change behavior, and some workloads need tuning after the upgrade. Second, never trust a feature list on its own. In this course, every 8.4 claim is tested on a real server, and each one carries a label. New in 8.4. New compared with 8.0, change default, or available since 8.0.
