Hello everyone, today we are going to pretend to be LADIES AND GENTLEMEN of the 19th century! We will have a picnic on the lawn, a walk in the park of an old mansion, and then in the evening we will be invited to a wonderful ball! My name is Aurora and I'm here with my husband Fabiano and my parents, we're getting ready for this special day.
Dress in stunning turn-of-the-century evening gowns, similar to the ones they used in 1850. These outfits were personally designed by my mother, with real laces and fabrics inspired by the outfits they used in the 1800's. Fabiano and my father dressed like two aristocratic gentlemen of the 19th century.
We will visit Villa Papafava, located in the hills in the province of Padova (northern Italy) and we will have a picnic in the "Frassanelle" Park.
These historical re-enactments are fun and also have a cultural purpose: before participating, you should learn about the fashion and usage of a particular era, then do your best to act like a real character of that period.
Hi everybody, welcome to this new video, which is a very special one because today we are
going to pretend we are gentlemen and ladies of the 19th century.
My name is Aurora and I'm here with my husband Fabiano and my parents.
We are getting ready for this unique day.
We are going to have a picnic on the grass, a walk in the park of an ancient villa, and
then in the evening we are invited to a great ball.
The picnic basket is ready.
My mother has found it in a charity shop last week.
I am doing my hair.
I've got a kind of curly hair extension.
This is how they used to style their hair in the 19th century.
Okay, this is done.
Let's get dressed.
So, ladies in the 19th century used to wear corsets and quinolines, but today we don't
want to suffer that much, so we are only wearing big petticoats.
We are going to wear the underpants for the last time, Aurora, because otherwise we can't move anymore.
At that time, dresses didn't have buttons, they had strings and they were very tight.
I don't have any maid, so my father is helping me to close this amazing white dress.
It is stunning.
You will see it later.
How are you doing with the laces?
We are at zero.
Are we ready?
Fabiano and my father are dressed up like two noble gentlemen.
Just a little bit of difficulty at that age.
I wear no card.
Okay.
And now let's go.
We are going to spend the day in the park of a beautiful ancient villa, which is located
on the hills in the province of Padova.
We are in northern Italy and it is a warm and sunny day.
Here is the great tree-lined road that leads us to the Frassanelle Park.
I must admit that we are still a little embarrassed to be dressed up like this.
My God.
It's an experience.
You are cute though.
Of course you are cute.
You are still discreet outside.
Yes.
I have to hold the phone like this because otherwise you go out.
You are too tall.
Oh, good boy.
But you are too short.
I guess ladies were very demanding also in that era.
Now we are in the park and we suddenly feel more at ease because there are many people
dressed up with antique-inspired costumes.
Everyone is so elegant.
There is a piano player and the music is helping us to get into the atmosphere.
Of course, there are also many visitors that are simply curious to have a look at this
event.
These reenactments are very fun and have also a cultural purpose because before participating
you should study fashion and uses of a particular era and then do your best to act like a real
character from that period.
The picnic area is divided in three parts.
There is the 18th century, the 19th century, and then the old country area where they have
been cooking all day long.
There are also many photographers.
They have been very kind.
I'm sharing with you some of their pictures during this video.
And here we are.
We feel as if we are going back in time.
Take the sun and then you'll get tanned and you'll never be beautiful again.
Look at her, she's so excited.
The movement of the elbow.
Now let me tell you something about our costumes.
My mother has sewn these two gowns with her own hands using some types of fabrics which
are similar to the ones used in ancient times.
As I told you, they are inspired to the 1850s ball fashion.
Here you can see some examples from the magazines of that period.
My mother is wearing this beautiful turquoise gown and this black lace is an original chantilly
lace dating from the end of the 19th century.
There are flower applications on the skirt and other lace details on the hem.
This is a pearl necklace by Miriam Haskell and the earrings are by the same designer.
These are original costume jewellery pieces from the beginning of the 40s.
She has a small hand-embroidered bag with golden hardware which dates from the first
years of the 20th century.
The fan comes from her huge collection.
It is a chantilly lace fan with a tortoise frame and a gold monogram on the guard stick.
I would like to have known the noble lady owner of this beautiful fan.
I also have one of my mother's fans.
This one is made of ox bone and the leaf is made of ivory satin, hand-painted with flowers
and trimmed with lace.
So precious.
If you like antique fans maybe you can visit my mother's website.
I will put the link down in the description box.
The pearl necklace is a costume jewellery piece but in the 19th century ladies used
to wear lots of pearls.
The earrings come from my costume jewellery collection and I found them at the flea market.
And then I have the cute little green bag that is made of silk and has golden hardware
and a ribbon on the handle.
This one dates from the early 20th century.
To complete our outfits we have two genuine parasols, a special kind of umbrella which
at that time was used to protect from the sun, not from the rain.
The white one is made of silk and is trimmed with lace.
It has a folding handle, this part is made of ivory and ends with a little grey hound
head.
Shooting time!
I bet they took as many pictures as in a wedding day.
The black parasol is made of silk covered with chantilly lace.
My father is wearing a top hat, a tail coat with a vest underneath and a matching tie
and pocket handkerchief.
Well, it's lunch time and we are all hungry, let's set up our picnic.
We brought the coffee cups that I've found recently in a vintage shop and some original
silver cutlery.
To complete our exposition we also have the ancient camera that we bought in Paris one
year ago.
I also made a video there and you will find the link down in the description box.
Then we have a straw hat and some of our accessories.
So, the main rule of this event is no plastic bags, so we are trying to hide the plastic bags.
This cake is called Durapoco, which in English is the cake which doesn't last at all.
Yes, I have to explain.
Now it's time to pack up everything and to visit the villa that is on top of these stairs.
I have to confess that these gowns are a bit too hard to wear for us nowadays.
You can't run, you can't move and it is stuffy in there.
I don't know how they could wear all day long such bulky dresses.
So, the situation is really complicated because I'm holding the umbrella, I'm holding a bunch
of things here and I'm making the video and I'm trying to walk in this giant dress.
But it's fun to share everything with you.
And so welcome to Villa Papa Fava.
It was originally a hunting lodge but it has been transformed in a beautiful villa in the
19th century.
It is in neoclassical style.
Inside there are still some of the original furnishings.
You can't do it in the 800.
No, not in front of the others.
Then in front of the parents.
What a beautiful place we are.
My father has lent his hat to that child.
So sweet.
There are the caves.
We are right under the villa.
Here there is the orangery and the entrance to the caves.
These 19th century artificial caves were a typical and essential element of a romantic
park.
There are also other surprises in this park which we will see later.
Now it's time for a group picture.
Let me see if we can find a place.
The photographers are ready.
We are ready.
Say cheese.
I didn't realize that we were so many until I saw this picture.
We didn't have the time to visit the rest of the park so we are climbing up the hill
again.
There is a temple up there that I absolutely want to see.
We also found another curious place.
Good morning.
We are on the bamboo forest.
All around us you can see bamboo.
And here is the temple that was designed by the famous Venetian architect Iappelli.
Now we have got to go down to the farmhouse.
That's where the great ball is going to be.
This courtyard must be beautiful also during the evening.
I have seen some pictures online.
What flavor did you take?
I took lemon and a glass of milk.
And finally everybody is going inside.
Let the dance begin.
This is the end of our 800th day.
It was very tiring.
We climbed up and down the stairs.
We are approaching a time.
This is the end.
This is the end for today.
I hope you have enjoyed our 19th century adventure.
It was very special.
Are you ok?
Yes.
Perfect.
