Fox 35 exclusive tonight. This picture here shows a cruiser blocking a truck.
This happened after the driver of that truck went unconscious and her vehicle
rolled into oncoming traffic. With just seconds to act, a Lake Mary police sergeant makes a decision
that may have saved lives. He put his own cruiser directly in the path of that truck
and took the hit. And tonight that hero is talking only to Fox 35.
Thanks for joining us on this Monday. I'm Luanne Sorrell.
And I'm Jack Royer. And Fox 35's Bailey Bockover is live in Lake Mary right now.
Bailey, that officer told you what was going through his mind in this weird moment.
Jack, he told me he didn't have much time to make a decision, but when he did,
he prevented a head-on collision from happening right here at this intersection.
Lake Mary Police Sergeant Robert Fugate says it was roughly 8.15 in the morning on Sunday
when he heard the sound of blaring horns in the intersection of Reinhart Road and Lake Mary
Boulevard. I observed the white truck start entering out into the intersection. And at
first I was like, oh, are we being that impatient on a Sunday morning? You know, what's going on?
He says he flipped on his lights and hit the siren to get the wrong way driver's attention.
That's when he saw what was really happening behind the wheel.
I realized that she was limp or slumped behind the wheel and wasn't, wasn't conscious, you know,
from what it, from what I could see. Sergeant Fugate says with the truck rolling at about 15
miles an hour toward oncoming traffic, he knew he had seconds to make a decision.
I moved forward and I angled my car so that I would take the impact to avoid
her harming herself or anybody else. It was my train of thought.
One witness sitting right in the path of the danger captured the moment on camera
just as the officer positioned his cruiser to block the truck from hitting him head on.
While many are calling his deliberate crash a heroic move,
the veteran officer sees it simply as answering the call.
I reacted to what was presented in front of me and, you know, did what I felt was best to
help preserve her life or somebody else's life and just protect people from,
you know, getting any further danger from it.
First responders quickly arrived on scene and determined the driver was suffering
from a medical emergency.
And because of the sergeant's quick thinking, no one was seriously injured.
Live in Lake Mary, Bailey Bockover, Fox 35 News.
