so when I received this subscription box
from Mrs quilty I thought straight away
that it would be fun to make a couple of
the small projects and then to paint
them in watercolor just to see what it
would be like to copy printed fabric
designs in a loose watercolor style so
this is very Pink as you can see
extremely pink and we're going to paint
it and because of that we need to think
about pinks so I have prepared here um
I'm going to sit down and slow down
right um yeah the Fabrics are all in
different shades of pink so I thought I
would first of all explore the whole
idea of
pink and in my box here what I like to
do when I'm doing something like this
and we're talking about color is I like
to get everything together and put it in
one place so that I can you know grab it
when I want to actually do it um so
looking at
these
Fabrics we need several different shades
of
pink and what you can do is
either you can either go through your
stash or if you use this is where this
is where in a way using tubes is better
than using tins of paint because if you
use tin of paint you've got all the
colors there all in front of you all at
once and that can be a a little bit
confusing but if you've got if you use
tubes you can go to your drawer where
you keep your tubes and you can pull out
all the pinks and then you can say yes
okay I'm going to use those so what I've
got here
is I have
got chevening chevening and Rose that's
an old
Holland uh Rose deep any paint in a tube
or any other way that's called something
Rose is going to be basically pink right
if it's not called Rose it might or
might not be pink so for example azarin
Crimson that will give you a pinkish
kind of color if you dilute it down
because Crimson is kind of a little bit
pinkish but it has a bit of an undertone
a kind of um a little bit brownish in a
way so it's not a pretty pretty pink if
you want a pretty pretty pink you need
to go for something like permanent rows
you can see them here swatched out um or
Opera that's chevening and Rose that one
that's permanent Rose that's a windsor
and Newton one um this is Opera it's
also Windsor and
Newton um and then I've
got uh kodone Rose which is in my hand
here this is Michael Harding but it
could be any brand that's very new isn't
it new and big and then I've got um you
see this is this is where I have I have
some tin um tins of paints as well um
this is purple Lake from scha and then
we've got um shell pink from Hine and
this is this is what I would call baby
pink so those six pinks will give you a
nice range if you're going to
um uh paint something like this one way
of doing it you can see how that's going
to work
right or if you don't have all of those
colors if you haven't got six different
p
then you can um obviously take one of
them and just alter it a little bit by
adding a little tiny bit of blue a
little tiny bit of yellow to give a
slightly um different shade of pink and
you can also add something like Jean
brilliant or um uh what's it called buff
Titanium or white gouache or as I've got
here titanium white which you can add to
Red in order to bring it back down to
Pink so that's another way otherwise all
you do is add water and the more water
you add the lighter the color is going
to
be um and the other color that's in this
material is green obviously and I chose
two
greens um here I have emerald green
which is this one and sap Green Lake
from actually old Holland this is wisor
Newton um doesn't matter which brand
somewhere along that spectrum of greens
will be absolutely fine so there we are
there's that that's the
colors and what I'm going to do in order
to be able to paint conveniently with
these colors I'm going to use a ceramic
palette like this one um or this one
these are both similar uh not quite the
same you can get these from Meen and
I'll put a link in the uh I'll put links
to everything I use in the description
below so I'm going to use one of these
for these oh and I should also mention
as well at the same time as I've got my
paints I've also got my markers my
acrylic markers these ones and I've
pulled out the colors that I think might
be handy and I've got
some um brush paints as well watercolor
brush paints from poetique the ones I've
always used and they might be useful for
tiny details so I've got those at at
ready okay so they're in a little tray
just there
so let's see let's get these paints on
the
road so I know that I'm going to want to
use the shell pink and I'm only going to
put a tiny bit of each one out
because um I'm not going to use much I
can guarantee see the thing is these
paints are so
strong um I might not use the purple
lake so this is um
chevening and Rose deep which is
probably very similar to quinacridone
Rose
uh once you've got them in your palette
you don't need to worry about which
one's which you can just use them
intuitively this is permanent Rose Opera
Rose rather which is very bright that's
this one it's a nice bright pink
I think some people say it's not light
fast but I'm not worried about
that I'm going to fade away before the
paint
does so then this one that's permanent
Rose I don't know how long I've had
these tubes of paint 30 40 years
definitely 30 because some of them went
with me to uh Canada when we
immigrated and that's a long time ago
now and then I'm going to use for the
green I'm going to pick the sa sap green
here and I might want a bit of yellow so
for the yellow I will use the Jean
Brant which is this one now I'm not
going to put it in there because that's
where I might want to mix my colors but
I will put it in a little dish I also
will have another little dish in case I
want to mix in there
too so we'll put the Sean brilliant in
there it's a handy color that one might
need a bit
more that's a whole Bine
color okay so you can all go and live
over there for a minute
paints so the next thing um we need to
choose our
brushes and I'm going to probably
use um my Princeton Aqua
Elite it's a size eight round and I'm
recommending that because it's the best
one that I've found that's available on
Amazon um for preference though I would
always use my draw Wells which have a
lot more spring I don't know if you can
see that if I go like that I can sort of
spay it out and bend it a bit you see
how that
bends whereas this one you can't do
that and that's much better brush has to
be said although I do quite like
painting with that Des the fact that it
is showing its age I think is probably
the
thing it's what tamson bought it for me
last Christmas I
think yeah it's definitely showing its
age and brushes will they will wear out
if you use them every day and I take
care of my brushes I don't do anything
wrong with them it still comes to a
reasonable Point um but this one which
isn't even
damp this is uh from Japan handmade in
Japan by Mr Miami I don't get any um
commission from him at all I recommend
him because um he always sends me a
Christmas present
and and um he seems like a nice man and
it's a small very small company and he's
very nice and a lot of people have
bought rushes from him so have a look at
the website that belongs to him it's
it's really sweet and um maybe think
about ordering brushes from him they're
not expensive and they uh you have to
pay obviously for the
shipping but um it's worth it I think a
lot of people have said that they don't
mind and if you P up with somebody else
to uh to get a whole bunch in one go
then the shipping pales into
insignificance cuz they're only a few
dollars each anyway so that's that and
I've got here a
size8 both of those I mean they're not
the same are
they but anyway they're both called
eight and this one is a three just in
case I need it for some details so
there's that and the next thing is
um what was the next thing draw the
design that's right that's what the next
thing is so we need paper and I'm going
to actually find on
open I'm going to use a 12 by9
watercolor cold press from Meen 100%
cotton I she use
that I
think and then what we need to do is
arrange ourselves a little
um still life so I'm going
to uh do a sketch and I'm going to put
my cup my um
needle case and
my um glasses case in an arrangement and
then I'm going to do a little sketch on
a piece of sketch
paper and I have already done that
because I have been trying it out so I I
came up with this sketch having done
that I realized that actually I don't
want the glasses case to be in a
straight line like that so I'm going to
have to move it a little bit so I'm
going to use that initial idea and I'm
going to transfer it in some way onto
here or redraw it I should say and then
we're going to paint it so let
us move these out of the way a little
bit I'm I'm sorry you won't be able to
see everything all at the same
time but um so all I need is just an
ordinary HB
pencil and uh
and I shall
uh sit down and draw
this so we'll start with the
cup probably best to start by drawing
the
lips at the
top and we're not going to too much
about perspective and the reason I'm
doing it on such a big piece of paper
really is
because
um I want to be able to get some of the
detail I'm not going to go crazy about
the
detail but a little bit so that's the
glasses case and I'm not going to go
crazy about the perspective
either uh so hang on a second that is
coming down
there so I'm going to pretend that it is
standing well it can stand actually do
that yeah that will
do and then my
glasses just going to take them off and
put them in
there so I can draw them
this requires a little bit of
concentration that do
okay now I haven't put anything in the
way of detail on on these yet but we
could probably just draw in
our lines like
that and this has got a a
border at the top
border at the
bottom that and
then the design kind of goes across like
that and then this one has got the
button
here and
then the Cozy goes
around
and the stripes go like that
having done that we need to then lift
off some of
the
um graphite because we don't want the
lines to show through too much do we and
I'm just wondering what on Earth I've
done with my Eraser which I thought oh
there it is it was so we just go this is
a needed
eraser um just go over everything
lifting up a little bit
so and that was that line no that was
the one that was wrong
so and we're just lighten it up a little
bit when you use a needeed eraser you
don't rub like that you just press and
lift press and lift press and lift
okay right so that's that and now the
fun begins
um need a piece of paper to test the
colors on so I'll just find of
[Music]
paper there we go and this is just a bit
of fun this is just a bit of
fun so first thing we're going to paint
the background color for the fabric
sections and basically all I'm going to
to
do to achieve this I hope it's going to
work just in case you've lost faith and
you don't think it's going to work I
have tried it out and it did work so we
have these
ones here which was my first um trial so
just to remind myself what I did you
know how it is sometimes when you do a
painting the first time you do it is
better than the subsequent times have
you noticed that it's quite strange
really so I'm going to pop those
there and let's pick up some pinks let's
start
with can you see yes you can start with
this
one if you use plenty of
water then you will get a nice pale pink
and I'm not trying to match
anything I'm
just um just going to vary the colors
and I'm going to go from one to another
just kind of at
random but I won't do two side by side
initially because if I do that the
colors will
run so basically I'm waking them all up
and uh let's do the shell pink one
yep so we'll just remember that we can
see through the
glasses so I have to paint there like
that and
[Music]
then as you go along you can sort of mix
them
up so no two of them are going to be
exactly identical and that's it's going
to make it kind
of more interesting
and we might leave one or two of them
white because they were the white
background for
example um that one could have the roses
on it and what have we got we've got the
Roses well it's only the Roses really
that's got white background
okay and you could easily just use one
color of pink for this you definitely
don't
need all these um different colors I
just thought it would be
interesting to see all the different
ones and how similar they all
are aren't they you know that one I've
used a bit less water so it's a bit
darker the only one that's really
different is the shell pink which is a
little bit more
opaque and we'll go around the
edge and maybe make the inside a little
bit
darker probably put another coat in
there and then okay so we actually one
color that I didn't get out we probably
do need is a little bit of brown for the
coffee so I'll
just put that in the
top and the Cup itself is sort of brown
as
well so we' got that there that's color
of the
cup and then my
glasses are kind of dark brown
I
think or grayish
actually so more
gray I think I'll do them
last do the glasses last
[Music]
okay so haven't got that far what we
need to do now is let it dry or put the
hair dryer on
it okay I missed that so I put that edge
there and so now I'm going to start
painting the flowers so
let's maybe maybe it would be a good
idea to switch to a smaller brush I
think that might be a thought so we go
to the size
three and um let's pick up
some some nice
pink and let's put some roses and I'm
not going to try to completely
duplicate the way the roses are on the
fabric because that would be too
difficult so we'll just do it like this
and then we need some
green for the little
leaves okay so that's that one and I
think we need some on here
once you've done them once you can come
in with a little bit darker just
slightly slightly darker pink and just
add a little bit of 3D to
it and then we put the leaves on
and then we need some here as
well good way of practicing
roses and just add a little bit
darker slightly darker and then we'll
pop on pop in the
leaves pretty isn't
it
right so that's that and then the next
one is going to have some little
parts so we'll go to um this one here
for example and we're just going to
painting some
using quite pale
paint painting
some I can correct that with a little
bit of white it kind of ran a little bit
okay and that's need some over here
okay and we've got some tiny tiny little
flowers with
just whoops little
dots and I'm going to use a cheaty thing
here I'm going to go for
the water color brush
pin and put them in like
this cuz it's just just too
tricky to
do
with a paint
brush so that works quite well and then
we'll grab our
green and do the
little joining bits like that
um I think you can choose here which one
you want to do it in I think we'll do it
here you can really lose yourself in
something like this you just you forget
all
about whether or not you remember to pay
the
Milkman oh yesterday someone came to the
door last night while we were eating
dinner actually um and he'd been before
we thought first of all that it was the
gypsies come to ask if we had any you
know any old iron or any Rag and Bone um
but actually it was a chap who came a
little a while ago selling us and sold
us
um uh potatoes and he'd come around last
night with cauliflowers and onions and
shots and um so we we took some of those
that was lovely cuz they're really
lovely and
fresh just been cut that morning he said
and I believe
him um now I want to put some white on
and I'm going to use I think
this acrylic marker I'm going to use
this one CU I want to put some acrylic
some whites that's going to really show
up like
that and we'll put it here as
[Music]
well and um let's put it up on this one
you can see that what I'm trying to do
is is these white ones
here and then the other design that
we've got is on the cup is these ones
here these nice big round orangy sort of
shapes I'm not going to make them too
orange but I
will change the pink a little
bit and we'll put
them put them
here don't want to make it too
dark just keep them nice and pale which
you make that happen by using plenty of
water and then this one here has got
just little tiny flow so I'm just going
to put some white dots
on
that and now I need to do my
glasses so I have to take them off
again put them there so we had
let's hope this works
that'll
do looks roughly like glasses that will
do I
think
okay and then I need to put the little
stems on this one so this has got
I really like using these watercolor
brushes because they have such fine
point and they are so accurate when
you're going to do something like that
it's such fun really
is okay and
now uh the time is
near for me to paint the final
strokies we need a little bit of blue
and because I'm always well prepared I
do have a little bit of blue handy and
we're going to put a little bit of blue
around the top
edge of the cup to indicate
white and we'll make the coffee a little
bit darker
and we'll make this a little bit darker
down here as
well oh yes and I need to paint the
Buton which is cream color so the Jean
brilliant from Hine is thing to use for
that and it's got this little attachment
thing
and the
holes and a bit of Shadow around the
outside and then I'm going to use the
pink pen to do um there
are lines
on the edging which I couldn't possibly
do with a
brush and they go like
this and I have on this side sort of
this has got the floral design so we'll
just do some
dots and then we need to make the
inside of
of the needle case bit shadowy so we'll
just add a little bit of
blue to the pink so that's more shadowy
and then we'll come
around that's too dark so we'll lift
that out
and then I'm going
to I want
to go around the
edge oh I needed a little bit more blue
just to make the
inside here a little bit
darker little bit more shadowy
and just emphasize the joins between the
Fabrics a little
bit I think this one wants to be a
little bit darker too here
and then we'll
put kind of pink Center to these
flowers and then I'm going to use the
pen again to do some stitching
cuz it is top stitched
this and
then another row
of pink around the outside
and we'll let that bleed a little
bit okay well I think we're getting
there
you could uh if you wanted to emphasize
some of the lines by using marker a fine
liner or something like that if you
wanted to for example the
glasses um that wouldn't be a totally
bad idea and
um because the the way I've painted it
the the outside edges are quite sort of
undefined but another way to do it is
just to come back with your paint
and just go around the
outside a little
bit like
that and I think we're pretty much
finished
now uh
put some edging down there as
well okay and maybe we
need um something for it all to be
standing on so if we take go back to the
larger brush and maybe we'll
just oh what color shall we use for it
to be standing on
thinks don't want it to be
green maybe maybe that's perhaps where
the liloy color might come in so we
could pick up a bit of
blue or maybe
blue let's
try what would blue look like it might
be too much maybe a little bit of lycky
blue
that might
work this is
ultramarine with a bit of permanent
Rose which is going to give us kind of
lcky color so we'll just put in
we just keep that very rough and not
complete and take that up sort of
halfway up the cup and that kind of
defines the outside edge a little bit
better
too so there we are I think the glass is
actually need a bit more
work um hang on a
second just a bit
[Music]
of that's a
um was over the top that is a
cow moving did you hear that
okay well I'm going to call that today
hope you enjoyed that that was a little
bit of fun playing around and um I have
never painted anything quite like that
before not sure if I'll ever paint
anything quite like that again but it
was an
experience so I'd like to introduce you
to Mrs quilty which is a quilting
subscription box which I have recently
received um from Adam and um we are
offering you an extra 20% discount if
you sign up using the link in the
description below um which will give you
uh 20% off of an already very reasonable
subscription of $31 a month and with Mrs
quilty you are going to get every month
a completely different selection of
fabrics and a magazine with um projects
in it as well as other gifts which are
going to be useful for you in your
quilting Journey um this month the
package included um two packs is's
usually 12 to 16 different um pieces of
fabric these are all fat quarters and
the very pretty one this one was last
month and um I've used it and I have
created some of the things that are in
the book here um three three of the two
of the designs and this is one I made up
um so there's a a glasses case and a cup
uh cozy and um there are other things as
well which I'll show you in a second and
I invented this one which is obviously a
needle case and um I haven't done any
quilting before um the only thing I've
ever quilted was about 35 years a no 45
years ago when I made a baby quilt for
my daughter who is now 45 um I've never
done any since but using the
instructions in this book here I was
able to pick it up straight away and um
I'm quite excited by this because it's
got me started on something something
completely new so inside this magazine
you will find and and remember this is
actually a physical magazine that you
get not like some um subscription boxes
which have gone over to giving you a
digital magazine which I think is an
exceptionally bad idea this is on paper
and it is very very good you've got um
all the description you need for each
project and in this one I think there
are um there's a cushion a throw blanket
the eyeglasses case the mug cover um and
a block of the month which is a block
that you can use for a larger project um
and they they all come complete with a
QR code that you can scan if I can find
one I'll show
you um the QR code which is hang on a
second we'll find it in a
tick
uh where are they
okay oh here we
are you can download the pattern by
scanning the QR code it comes straight
up on your
um computer screen and no problems at
all just print it and the way you go and
then you can just um print it off these
paper cut it out and then SW your uncle
so it's all very good and in this
particular one we got not only the
fabric which has created these Lov
things but also this was the free gift
these are um
bobin um cases uh to keep your bobbins
nice and tidy and it also came with two
of these nice buttons and a piece of
elastic which we used to hold the cup
cozy so that was the free gift on this
one um I don't think there was anything
else in it anyway it's a great thing and
for $30 a month or thereabouts I think
it's very reasonable the fabric I I
should mention the fabric is good
quality it's quite thin but for the
kinds of things that you're making like
this you don't want a heavyweight you
don't want heavyweight cuz you've got
double anyway plus you've got all the
seams so you don't want it thicker than
this and it's quite sturdy and it seems
like good quality and it's 100% cotton
and very pretty designs and I've looked
at some of their other boxes too and um
the patterns are really nice and they
all go really well together
