Did you know that some ice cream makers require 24 hours of planning,
while others can start making ice cream from liquid immediately?
But they do take over an hour to finish.
I've been trying out these two ice cream makers
and they are designed for two different types of users.
So which type is better for you?
Kilik kindly gave me access to both of these ice cream makers,
Dolce and Dolcena, to demonstrate the difference.
But like always, the experiments and opinions are my own.
The main difference between the two
is whether you need to pre-freeze the ingredients or not.
With the Dolce, you have to freeze the bowl in your freezer for 12 to 24 hours.
In the Dolcena, you don't need to pre-freeze it.
It has a built-in compressor.
You can just add in the ingredients,
pick a mode and it freezes and churns at the same time.
So if you pre-plan your ice cream, Dolce is a good option for you.
If you need instant ice cream on a whim,
then Dolcena is the right choice for you.
The next big difference is the capacity or quantity of ice cream
you can make in one shot.
The Dolce comes with two 500ml bowls with lids,
while the Dolcena has a 1.5 litre bowl.
Considering that you should fill the bowls only up to 60% for ice cream,
the real difference is 300ml versus 900ml.
Depending on the scoop size,
there is about 3 to 5 scoops in the Dolce
and about 9 to 15 scoops in the Dolcena.
So if you are a large family with kids,
the Dolcena is the way to go.
For individuals or for couple use,
the Dolce is more than enough.
Now, since the ingredients are already pre-frozen for the Dolce,
it can go from that state to ice cream in about 4 minutes.
For the Dolcena, since it is freezing, churning
and keeping the ice cream cool after the cycle ends,
it takes about 80 to 85 minutes to go from liquid to ice cream.
Of course, different dishes will take different amounts of time.
Since the starting point for Dolce is frozen ingredients,
the time for each of them will be lower.
If you want spontaneity, Dolcena is the way to go.
It would still take about 1.5 hours for the firm ice cream.
For Dolce, once pre-frozen, you can get it in about 2 to 4 minutes.
Now, Dolce comes with 2 bowls that needs to be frozen for 12 to 24 hours.
So you can make 2 batches per day, which is about 15 scoops of ice cream.
With the Dolcena, there is no such limit.
It can run back to back continuously.
So if you are someone who needs multiple rounds of dessert in one sitting,
the Dolcena is the right choice for you.
Dolce is for single portions or small portions only.
Now let's talk about the different modes and varieties.
This is where the Dolce gives more options than the Dolcena.
Dolce has 6 dedicated modes.
Ice cream, soft serve ice cream, frozen yogurt, gelato, sorbet and milkshake.
With each mode, the churn speed and the cycle time automatically adjust
to give us the right texture.
On the other hand, the Dolcena has 4 modes.
Soft serve ice cream, ice cream, milkshake and a stir function.
It also gives more flexibility by giving manual time adjustment.
My take, if you do make gelato or sorbet often,
then Dolce is a better option for you as there is already a preset for it.
You can still do the same with the manual settings in the Dolcena.
Now when you want to mix additional textures
like chocolate chips or nuts into your ice cream,
the Dolce has a dedicated mix-in mode
which helps to fold in the additional textures really well.
Dolcena does not have this but again,
you can use the manual mode to add the additional ingredients
and churn them in for a few minutes.
If you want the ice cream to be smoother or creamier,
you can always use the re-spin function in the Dolce to achieve that.
This is not there in the Dolcena
but you can use the manual settings like I said earlier for the same.
So if you are a first time user of the ice cream maker,
the Dolce is more convenient for you with its built-in presets and modes.
Dolcena gives you more manual control if you want to fine-tune the texture yourself
or you want to make large quantities of ice cream in one shot.
Now because the Dolcena does a lot more than just churn,
it is bigger and heavier than the Dolce.
The Dolce comes with 2 bowls and a manual in the box
while the Dolcena includes a measuring cup, a scoop,
mixing paddle as well as a transparent cover.
The Dolce and Dolcena are priced just Rs 5000 apart
but price should not decide what you buy.
Your usage should.
If you plan desserts in advance,
want maximum variety including gelato, sorbet and frozen yogurt,
then Dolce is the right choice for you.
It is compact and it is fast once frozen, just about 2-4 minutes per cycle.
If you want to make ice cream instantly, you want it in large batches
or you want multiple batches back to back
without thinking of freezing a bowl a day in advance,
the Dolcena is the right choice for you.
