My 1TB M3 MacBook keeps filling up with junk left behind by AI coding agents, so I bought a used Samsung 990 Pro 1TB and a UGREEN 40Gbps USB4 M.2 enclosure with a cooling fan to add fast external storage. I unbox the UGREEN enclosure, fumble the install without reading the manual, plug it into my MacBook, and then ask Claude Code to check the drive's health. SMART says the drive is healthy, but Claude points out the controller is a Realtek RTS5765, there is no Samsung vendor ID, and the firmware and serial number don't match a real 990 Pro. Then I format it and run a full write test to see how it actually performs.

00:00 Claude's verdict first 00:08 Why my MacBook keeps running out of storage 01:15 Used Samsung 990 Pro + UGREEN enclosure 02:05 UGREEN 40Gbps enclosure unboxing 04:50 AI coding agents leave junk everywhere 06:10 Installing the SSD in the enclosure 09:05 Plugging it into the MacBook 10:45 Asking Claude Code to check the drive 11:52 The verdict: almost certainly fake 13:35 Formatting and full write test 14:18 Speed results: 680MB/s, then 55MB/s 14:48 Sending it back + your experiences
but it is almost certainly not genuine 990 pro samsung nvme
this one is fake this is my macbook
it has one terabyte of storage m3 macbook
and it keeps running out of storage because of these
agents so you know right now i am using
an application called clean my mac and i'm trying
to remove a bunch of garbage from it to increase
my storage i was able to gain a few hundred
gb's by removing a bunch of stuff
but i thought maybe it's time to add something so i ordered
990 pro samsung nvme it's been very good
and this one is actually used so it's not new don't
not that rich so this and this ugreen enclosure
and what i'm going to do is now i'm going to use
this one that attaches to my macbook sitting right there attached
to this samsung 49 inch
odyssey g9 monitor and i am we are going
to use it continuously to increase my storage so let's
check it out let's get going
so if i am able to peel it off
this is actually not uh apparently
this is way better memory than this even this enclosure can handle
so even uh this enclosure
will not give you the speed that you're looking
for that this can deliver so it's that good of
nvme storage and if i like it that person actually has
a two terabyte sitting with him so maybe i
will get that one too so since these are used and
i will check its health and we'll see hopefully
i will be able to get it on in a good condition
so this is the enclosure made by Ugreen
Ugreen is actually a brand that i personally like
i mean Ugreen and Baseus these are the brands i
personally really like usb4 m2 thunderbolt 3
thunderbolt 4 support what else is here so this
is our enclosure very pretty looking actually
and it has this rubber shield on it to protect it
and i think it has a fan as well this is the type c
or with different fans to give out the heat
and the idea is that since i want to use it continuously
so it needs to be in a good condition
what is inside this accessory box let's check it out there seems
to be a cable here
that's weird why is it oh sorry i thought it was white
but it's not i was going to curse them for
making it white because the device is darker shade
but i don't have what it looks like it is not
so they have sent a screwdriver that's really nice of them
because i was looking at its
screws and I thought hmm how am I going
to unscrew it I need to use my MacBook
screwdriver I should find a place
to put it okay we have screwdriver what is
inside it you have this okay and what
is this okay I think it's double tape if I'm
right yes so that you can paste it somewhere I don't think I need it
pasting right now so let's leave
it what is this type a to type
C cable in case you have that I
have the MacBook which has Type C
so I I'm good with this one the Type C and I since they sent
this one I've been going to use this one
to achieve the maximum possible speed so this is
what came with it along with double tape
and let's bring out there also came documentation
now let's remove this cover so that we can install
the NVMe this is my first time actually using the
NVMe I usually just prefer what is installed
but since the dawn of agentic coding and agentic work
they leave garbage like crazy on every two
to three days I have to run cleaners to clean their
garbage their work trees
and things no matter how much I ask them hey don't leave garbage behind
they still leave garbage behind so this issue only
appeared after agentic development so I mean I
just I cleared the one terabyte no sorry one
terabyte 78 GBs of cloud code garbage from my
system so you can imagine
and that was truly garbage not some work left
behind so as you can see the fan here
and we will go there it is metal metal
metal very good quality at least looks that way
or feels that way not looks
okay which part goes where now
because this is my first time using it so I'm
okay I guess I
need to remove
this one like
this no
probably need
to remove
it completely so they sent one replacement
for it this one in case you lose it so this will
it will go like
this come on i'm not
doing it correctly
or what now it is
not coming out and
people are going to go crazy
in the comment section previously i've made a few videos on my
trimmer and people are you don't even know what they
are and you're making videos but i actually
enjoy it when people leave comments like
this so how is it going to go like this like this
i think i got it i think so for those who
are watching i actually i mean i can read the
documentation to get it right
and i will read it if i don't get it right but for some reason i
always like to try things without looking
at them i find even that's the whole theme of this channel
gadget running without
because i find it i like it the idea to explore things without
having pre-learned them i just like it we all have our phones
and i like the idea to explore things
i have some nails so let's
use them i think that
should be it right okay
okay before i do anything
let's test it out let's use this type C to type C
and let's connect it to my macbook well then let's
see what is i have this 2.5 giga
hertz ethernet adapter but we
will go remove it wi-fi will work
okay and and we
have it here new
volume nothing
has been popping
up okay let's see
what does the
get info says if it appears that is it appears
on this edge and as you can see we have one tv and
it is using windows nt file system
so we i will probably format it now we need to check the health
and usually you will use some certain softwares
but we don't need to we can just use claude here
so let's use
the let me adjust it let's launch
claude here you guys can see it
as soon as it launches
I would ask it to check
the health there is an NVMe
storage attached look
at its health isn't it fun now
whatever it needs to do it will
just do it on its own let's
see what it is all right
so I had to pause the video
because it was taking like forever
but here is what my cloud says actually the
drive reports as healthy
but it is almost certainly not genuine Samsung 990 Pro
and it gives a reason actually
is the drive's controller as PCI that is Realtek a
budget controller with no DRAM cache
a real 990 Pro uses Samsung's own controller which would show
Samsung's own controller ID so apparently
as for Claude this one is fake I
don't know let's even if it is fake
let's ask it
to do some tests just so we
can see here let's run some
tests see how good that it is
then if you know if it is fake so let's see how good
or bad it is I mean it is fake this and its
reason sounds solid
because it is saying that it's using a budget controller
instead of its own controller
and while the real one uses its own controllers so
that's the sound reason actually that's one
of the reasons for buying these kind
of NVMe SSDs says it
is NTFS Windows specific
so we need to format it to run
test I need to erase it
okay look yes formatted
so that it comes in to this
macOS compatible format it will take some time
so I'm going to pause the video and come back
as we have the claims back so here
is it first 40 GB it went about 680 MBps per second which is
way less than what it should be delivering
and then after that it settled for just 55 MB per
second and that's slower than even the USB 2.0
flash stick so way slow way slow so way worse
than one would expect it
so i'm going to return it that's what it was a bad experience but
enclosure is still there
and i have a good relationship with the seller so i will be able
to return that but the excitement went in the bin
because i wanted to make a video and show you how
to do it and i know i still have to wait for return
and new to manage my storage but anyway
it was still a good video making experience
so let me know about your experience too and take care bye
