Hutton and Lyell Theories || Mrs. Biology
The history of Earth is shared by the development of our planet from its formation to the present
day. Earth formed around 4.5 billion years ago, approximately one-third the age of the universe
by accretion from the solar nebula. But we will not forget that the present is the key to the past.
The geological history of Earth follows the major events in Earth's past
based on the geological time scale, which will remind us by James Hutton and Charles Lyle's
theory about uniformitarianism, which is essential to understand Earth's history.
Uniformitarianism states that the forces that built up and wear down Earth's surface today
were also the same forces that changed Earth's surface in the past, like water erosion,
wind erosion, landslides, glaciation, deposition of mud, and lava cooling into rocks.
To summarize it, Hutton and Lyle concluded that Earth is extremely old and that the processes
that changed the Earth in the past are the same processes that operate in the present.
If things are moving now, they must have always been moving in the same way.
