Hey, welcome back! In today's video we're gonna paint this campfire painting here.
So we dive right into this process here and you see we have pre-mixed a lot of different colors,
basically from pure titanium white to a very dark reddish color. And
we start with the fire, the center part of this painting here. And you see that I'm basically,
again using the dry brush technique, on the completely dry background.
And I think this is the key for a realistic painting that shows some fires in here.
You have places on the fire that are pretty solid, like the white part here.
And this painting, this color is basically straight from the tube now,
nearly no thinner, no linseed oil in. And on the outside we have these a bit darker colors.
And these are a bit more mixed down. And I'm using here more this dry brush technique.
Basically I'm rubbing the color in to the background while the paint on the brush gets
less and less. And this really helps to get in this effect of the fire that you have. I mean,
to really paint a fire is a very difficult process because you need to
get in this effect of the fire that is
more or less living. It sounds a bit off, I know, but it's dancing around, it has lots of
different colors. You have places where the fire is very thin, where you see the background
shining through. And you have places where the color is very solid. And
on these places you need to put in the color very thick to really get the background color
covered. And then you have places like here, for example, where you
basically toy around with the background color. And you also need to make sure that you
get in the fire in very different shapes. You not only have those parts where the fire is very
solid, you also have the parts where it is very thin, like here, for example. This is a glaze mark
sample, more or less. And you also need to make sure that you have a lot of different shapes and
sizes of the flame. Smaller ones like here, bigger ones, parts where the flame basically
has a bit harder edges, a bit more edgy. And parts where the fire is basically melting into
the background. And this is achieved by using different brushes here, like this, for example.
Get a bit of a blended effect. And yeah, brushes of all different kinds of sizes,
very fine ones. And here now I start to build up the parts of the wood. And this may look off now,
but a bit too dark on this part here. But you will see later on that it is really coming together.
And I followed the reference material and I basically also put in those different colors
that you have on this. There are burnt pieces of wood on the upper end. We have basically just
coal colored wood and some flames towing around. And you also need to put in those
lighter and colder colors that I put in now here, to basically reflect the volume of this
log here. And also the color of the background, the color of the sky, that determines basically
the color of the shadow. Also drybrushed quite a lot here, as you can see. Using a finger to blend.
So we have this transition between the cold color on the left side here of this log
and the warm color of the fire on the right side. And important is also these
cracks in the wood here, in this log. And for this I use a very thinned down color.
You can see it's basically running down the palette. I have also these parts where it's
still glowing and we have these reflections from the fire itself. And again this is a very
important part here, this cold warm contrast that you need to put in. Only then it starts to look
realistic. And really make sure that you have full control of this,
of the thickness of the color on these logs here. It's more or less just a hint of these
cracks that we have. And when you don't overdo this, it really starts to look realistic and
come together. And we need also to put in the warm reflections on the ground here, as you can
see. I'm still toying around adding some more highlights and some more colder highlights here.
A bit more bluish on this block here. And I think on this model painting it really makes a
difference. It was finished but I was not really satisfied with it. So I went back and
started to light up a bit the darker parts of this fire on the outside. And I think it really
helps to get in this character of the fire on the way here. Looking much better this way.
And we're finished. If you like this little tutorial then please let me know in the
comment section down below if we should do some more of these fire painting
tutorials. And meanwhile you can have a look at some other videos here.
