Moment after moment, we are constantly choosing who we want to be. Through our thoughts, words and actions we are constantly creating the character from which the results in our lives will follow.
And thus, we are always one decision away.
So in this video I won’t be telling you to take any cold showers, or to take on any new diets or workout regimens, there’s no need for you to wake up at 5 am.
My goal is to share with you 5 core beliefs that have dramatically served me in my life and I invite you to explore as well. I'm going to anchor each of them with a quote from a great book. I need you to drill these into your brain and seek evidence in your own life to prove them right. Don’t take my word for it.

Hello, hello, hello, hello.
Thank you for joining me.
Now, the entire premise of this video
rests on one presupposition that I invite you to consider.
We don't see the world as it is.
We see the world as we are.
In other words, our identity creates the boundaries
for what is possible for us and how we experience our life.
So if we want to change the circumstances in our lives,
regardless of what they may be,
your relationships, your business,
your financial situation, your health, whatever it is,
if we want to change the circumstances in our lives,
it is not enough to simply change our actions.
We cannot rely on these intermittent sprints
of motivation and conscious willpower
because if those actions, when those actions, rather,
inevitably clash with our old sense of self,
that will cause cognitive dissonance,
which then leads to self-sabotage.
So our task is to radically transform our internal world.
This video will hopefully help you do just that.
At least it will be one tool in your arsenal to do that.
So in this video, what I'm gonna do
is break down three old limiting and destructive beliefs
that are very common amongst most of us
and help give you the tools to dismantle them
and break them down.
And then I want to share with you
five positive, empowering beliefs
that will dramatically change the way you see yourself
and the world.
And it won't be enough for you to watch this video.
That won't change your life.
No video can change your life.
No book can change your life.
What can change your life is if you listen to these words
and you take the time and energy to wrestle with them,
to write them down, and to then go into the world
over the next few weeks, over the next months,
and find evidence to confirm that these beliefs are true,
right, reality test them in your life,
if you do that, I promise you
this could have a meaningful transformation in your life.
My name is Mikey.
This is In Perspective.
Okay, the number one belief that we need to break down
is the belief that you are your thoughts,
that you are your mind.
This is not the case.
Your thoughts are a part of you.
Your mind is a part of you
that you need to train and learn to control
just so you learn to train and control your body.
There's a quote from the Bhagavad Gita
that I wanna read to you.
For him who has conquered the mind,
the mind is the best of friends,
but for one who has failed to do so,
the mind will remain the greatest enemy.
If you're anything like me,
if you're anything like most people,
oftentimes you will have these thoughts
that are so disgusting, so shameful,
you will harm yourself with your own words,
with your own thoughts.
Something happens in your life and you judge yourself,
you shame yourself, you remember this, you remember that.
There's this storm inside your mind,
racing with thoughts,
this voice that's constantly criticizing you,
judging people, judging events.
If you identify with that,
if you believe that you are your thoughts
and that monkey chatter in your mind is you,
you have already lost the battle.
That is an assumption that you're making.
In reality, we are the awareness behind the thoughts.
You are not your thoughts,
you are the awareness behind your thoughts.
So what does that mean?
Well, the very fact that you can recognize
that there is a voice inside your head
that is constantly telling you these negative things,
that is proof that you are not your thoughts.
You are the awareness,
you are capable of recognizing your thoughts
and then exerting conscious willpower
to direct your attention elsewhere.
You are a great being.
You are consciousness itself, not your thoughts.
Your thoughts are often just this program loop
of beliefs, perceptions, judgments, biases
that have been installed in you by your culture,
by your parents, by your family, whatever it may be.
So that is one thing that you need
to remind yourself constantly,
I am not my thoughts, I am not my mind.
The second belief that we need to break down,
and I'll admit this is one of the hardest ones to break down
because so much of the world thinks this way,
is that our value as a human being
is determined by the results in our lives.
The world will give you five ways
to measure your success, your value, right?
You likely already know what these are,
your possessions, your achievements,
your looks, your money, and your status.
And there's a reason why this is the case
because those things are extremely easy to quantify.
It's very easy to quantify how much money I have,
how many followers I have, what my face looks like,
what possessions I have.
It's very easy to quantify those things
and therefore compare each other.
It's very hard to measure and quantify things like love,
things like joy, things like fulfillment.
But what happens is that when you place your sense of worth,
your sense of value on these external things,
possessions, achievements, looks, money, status,
you are externalizing your sense of agency,
your sense of worth.
You're making yourself very vulnerable and fragile
to your sense of worth being stolen.
Why?
Because first of all,
those things are often not fully within your control.
There will always be circumstances outside of your control.
And therefore, when you make your value,
your sense of worth as a human,
dependent on these external things,
you are deliberately making yourself fragile.
You're making your internal world,
you're building it on like a foundation of sand.
Admittedly, this is very hard.
It is very hard to not make your sense of worth,
to not measure your sense of worth on these external things
because everybody is doing this.
It's not your fault, right?
Your parents, your friends,
the people you see on social media,
myself to some extent,
everybody, every day will tell you
your worth is measured by these external things.
You have to deliberately,
consciously bring awareness to that
and refuse to place your happiness,
your feelings of worthiness, your feelings of love.
You cannot let it be dictated by these external things
because you will never have enough.
And also it will never be within your control.
So that's just a very silly approach to the world.
The third destructive belief that holds many of us back
is this idea that successful people were born that way.
Be that their genetic makeup, right?
They're this tall or they're a man or they're a woman
or they're beautiful, they have blue eyes.
They were born to the right parents
that gave them the right resources and opportunities
or mindsets growing up.
Whatever it may be, successful people were born that way
and that's why they have the things they have
and I don't have that privilege.
I have a chronic illness that I deal with.
I have this financial trauma for my family.
I have X, Y, Z.
This belief is rooted in another presupposition
that assumes that we are competing for limited resources.
And this is true if your measure of success
is the things we just discussed,
possessions, achievements, looks, money, status.
If that's how you measure success,
then yes, we are competing for limited resources.
But if how you measure success is something much greater,
like love, fulfillment, joy, service,
those things are infinite.
Love is infinite.
There is no competing with people on how much love
and joy you can feel within yourself.
There's no competing with people on the depth of love
and the richness of your relationships.
You can't compete with people on that, right?
So that's the very first thing.
The second thing is to just understand
that all humans are capable of rising
to a level beyond what we think is possible, right?
Regardless of where you started,
if you're not competing with people
on possessions, achievements, looks, money, status,
if you're not competing with people,
then you are trying to grow for yourself
the experience of transforming your inner world
and then going out, interacting with people,
interacting with the world, starting a business,
changing your fitness, whatever it may be,
and then seeing yourself grow and surpass new levels.
That in itself is a beautiful experience
and we all have the capacity to grow
beyond what we think is possible.
Yes, of course it's gonna take hard work,
hours and hours and hours of deliberate practice
on specific skills.
It's gonna take delayed gratification.
It's gonna take all of those things
that you already know from self-help books and gurus.
But you're capable of much more than you think you are
and you only feel bad or inferior
when you compare yourself with people
based on external metrics
because then that makes you think
that you're competing for limited resources.
You are not.
What we all want deep down is love,
is fulfillment, is joy, it's internal states
and you cannot compete with people for those things.
Those things are infinite.
Okay, now I wanna share with you some positive beliefs.
Again, don't just take my word for these.
Don't just listen passively.
That's not gonna do anything for you.
What you should do is try to remember these.
Write them down.
While you're watching this, think about them
and seek evidence to confirm that these beliefs are true
and if you write them down, if you take note of them,
over the next couple of weeks,
over the next couple of months,
seek evidence in your life, in your interactions with people
to confirm that these beliefs are true.
That is how beliefs form and take hold on your mind.
I'm gonna anchor each of these beliefs
with a quote from a great book
to give what I'm saying a bit more weight.
Number one, you were created for glory.
You have infinite inherent worth.
Now I know I'm quoting the Bible here
saying you were made in God's image.
You may not be religious, that's fine.
I'm not either, to be honest with you.
But what does this mean?
How can we make sense of this?
Change the word God for good orderly direction.
Change the word God for infinity, for love,
for nature, for existence, for consciousness itself.
Can you recognize the fact that nature is a gift,
that consciousness, that the entire experience of reality,
the thing that we call life,
that that is an incredible thing that makes no sense
but you are here made of the same substance,
of the same raw material as everything else.
You are not a drop in the ocean.
You are the entire ocean in a drop.
That was Rumi who said that.
You have a gift inside you.
That gift is the fact that you're here alive.
Your consciousness itself.
Do not shy away from it.
You were meant for glory.
You have infinite inherent worth.
There was nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people don't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine.
We are all meant to grow.
We are all meant to expand.
Don't shy away from your light.
Belief number two, every circumstance, person,
and challenge that you encounter,
it's all working for your good.
The good, the bad, the challenging, the frustrating,
the infuriating, no matter.
It is all working for you if you let it.
Again, this is one of those beliefs
that if you perceive the world this way,
if you see the world this way,
you will constantly find evidence to prove that it is true.
If you think that the world is out to get you,
you will also see that to be true, right?
We have, I'm getting off topic here,
but we have a reticular activating system.
It is a part in your brain that will find evidence
to confirm the things that you were looking for, right?
I'm sure you've seen those videos or that exercise
of if I told you to look around your room right now
and try to find something red,
you would look around and count all the red things,
but then you would not be able to find a blue thing
because you were not looking for a blue thing.
Every circumstance in your life, the good, the bad,
the challenging, the obstacles, the infuriating,
the frustrating, every person you meet,
everything is working to help you.
Everything is working for your glory,
for your personal transformation, for your growth,
for your capacity to give love and to feel love.
Everything is working in your favor if you let it,
if you adopt this mindset, that is how it will be.
Number three, there are two forces in this world,
love and fear.
This is one of the most powerful frameworks you can adopt.
Whatever emotion and experience you're going through,
whatever internal experience you're going through,
desires, motivations, anxiety,
think about all of the things that you experience
on a day-to-day basis, self-doubt, excitement,
whatever it may be.
Can you boil all those down to two forces?
I think you can, love and fear.
And when you understand this,
in those moments where you feel your body
literally tense up and close,
you had an argument with a loved one
and you feel yourself close,
you sense yourself getting angry at them,
you wanna yell at them, you wanna...
Can you recognize that that is fear?
When you're feeling super focused, super productive,
energized, playful,
can you recognize that as love?
And when you adopt this framework,
then the question is simple, not easy, but simple.
Do you want to live a life in fear
or do you want to live a life in love?
How can you magnify those positive experiences,
those loving experiences within your heart
and within the heart of those around you?
It's that simple.
This takes tremendous awareness, consciousness.
It takes a tremendous ability
to hold your highest realization, right?
To remember belief number one.
But this will be extremely powerful
because oftentimes when we're experiencing
a negative emotion, a negative state,
we are not just experiencing
that negative state in isolation,
we are also resisting the positive state.
When you feel anxiety, what is anxiety?
Anxiety is fear of the future.
It's fear that something in the future is gonna go wrong.
What is the opposite of anxiety?
It's faith.
Faith is love of the future.
It's, again, a blind belief with no evidence
that things are gonna go well,
that things are gonna expand and grow.
Love and fear.
What kind of life do you want to live?
Belief number four,
and this is one of the founding principles of Stoicism,
if you've ever studied Stoicism.
The problem is not the problem.
The problem is how you're thinking about the problem.
Epictetus once said,
men are not disturbed by things,
but by the views which they take of them.
Everything in life is just an experience.
It is part of this infinite process,
this infinite chain of cause and effect
that has been going on long before you were here.
It is literally just an event.
It is neutral.
We humans place our judgments on them
based on our biases, on our beliefs,
our perceptions, our experiences of life,
and then we wrestle with them.
We feel pain towards them
because we're not letting the experience pass through us.
The problem is not the problem.
The problem is how you're thinking about the problem.
If you feel stuck, if you feel frustrated,
try as best as possible to first go to belief number one,
how fast can you come back to center,
to your realization that you are here alive,
part of this beautiful thing that we call existence,
that we call life, that we call God.
How fast can you come back to that?
And then from that neutral place,
letting go of all your inner tension,
how fast can you try to adopt a different angle,
a different perspective from which to view the problem from,
to think about it differently,
a more empowering perspective.
That takes discipline, that takes self-awareness,
but that is the only way
that you're gonna overcome challenges in your life.
Last but not least is that there is no such thing
as failure, only feedback.
Failure and success in our culture
are we describe them as opposite things, right?
There's winners and there's losers, success and failure.
But in reality, success and failure are highly interrelated.
They go together.
There is no such thing as failure, only feedback.
If you adopt the belief that every time you try something,
it is that, it is an attempt, it is a trial,
it is you getting data, getting feedback
on how to keep moving forward.
It is not a failure, it's feedback.
See the problem with getting attached
to external results, right?
Possessions, achievements, looks, money, status.
If you get attached to achievements and successes,
these external things,
there will never be enough opportunities.
There will never be enough wins.
You will never have enough championship games.
You will never have enough gold medals.
You will never sell enough businesses.
You will never have enough videos go viral.
There will never be enough external feedback
to make you feel like a success.
So what you have to do is bring your internal,
your locus of control, sorry,
you have to bring that inside.
You have to say what feelings, experiences,
and states do I want to embody?
Do I want to carry with myself?
And how do I take control of them right here, right now?
These failures, these setbacks,
they're not failures, they're not setbacks.
You can eliminate that word from your vocabulary.
They are feedback.
They are data points that you can use
to continue growing and expanding your sense of self,
your sense of love.
I hope this serves you.
This is a bit more of a unscripted podcast
as I've been doing recently,
but you guys seem to have really been enjoying them.
So that's great.
It makes me happy.
Let's recap really quickly.
Three beliefs that you need to let go of.
The belief that you are your thoughts,
that you are your mind.
You are not your thoughts.
You are not your mind.
Your mind is something you can learn to control and direct
just like you learn to control and direct your body.
Number two, my value is based on the results of your life.
Horrible way to view the world.
You will never have enough control
and you're deliberately making yourself fragile
because those things are outside of your control.
And also they are always susceptible to comparison.
Instead, what you need to do
is bring your sense of worth inside
to things that are infinite.
Things like love, things like joy, things like peace.
How can you cultivate those things?
How can you make your value infinite?
Which it is.
The third belief that we need to get rid of
is the belief that successful people are born that way.
They're not.
Yes, we all have different starting circumstances
but you're not competing with anyone.
You're only competing with people
if you think resources are limited,
which they are if you measure them by external things.
The resources that are not limited
are the internal resources.
Love, joy, peace, fulfillment, service.
There's no competing with anyone there.
There's just competing,
competing quote unquote with yourself to grow and expand.
And finally, the five positive beliefs.
You were created for glory.
You have infinite inherent worth.
Every circumstance and every person you encounter
is here to teach you and help you.
It's all working for your good.
The problem is not the problem.
The problem is the way you're thinking about it.
There's no such thing as failure, only feedback.
And finally, love and fear.
Those are the two forces in the world.
I hope this helps you.
My name is Mikey.

Peace.
