Getting the Stone Wall Ready for a Window | Old Finca Restoration

The stone wall is getting close to one of its biggest milestones — we're finally preparing the opening for the new window.

In this episode of our old finca restoration, the wall has reached the point where we can start planning exactly how the window will sit in the opening. We're doing things slightly differently this time because we want to leave the beautiful original stone lintels completely exposed rather than hiding them behind the new window installation. These lintels are around 150 years old and are one of the features we really want to preserve.

Before the window can go in, there's still plenty of work to do.

The stonework above the opening is loose and crumbly, so I consolidate it with lime mortar and carefully build it back up to the required height. We're using traditional materials and techniques while rebuilding this section of the old stone wall.

We also start preparing the window sill. Rather than using more of the increasingly difficult-to-find flat stones we've used elsewhere in the house, we're going to see if some reclaimed handmade clay tiles can be used instead. These tiles came from a nearby ruin and have already been reused in several areas of the house.

The tiles need cleaning first, so we soak them overnight to loosen the old mortar before removing the remaining stubborn deposits. It's slow work, but reusing original or reclaimed materials is an important part of this restoration.

By the end of the video, we've taken the wall as far as we safely can for now, and the new stonework is looking promising. The window will be coming next.
