Hi everyone, this is Connie. Today we are going to talk about how to use the right hand to create
a beautiful sound on the cello and this is my friend Ben and everyone you can follow along
when we play together. So now we want to start with the bow and what I want you to do is to find
the balance point of your bow which means that at this point when you're holding the bow it should
be parallel to the ground like this where it's nicely balanced. Okay and I want you to move
your left hand over slightly for a little bit and then I want you to drop your right hand just
lightly on your bow stick. So what you want to aim for is having around one and a half knuckles
over your stick like this. So make sure you can move your hands freely like this using your wrist
and everything is nice and loose. Wonderful and now let's move it over to this part of the bow
which is called the frog. So your middle finger would be over this part called the ferrule
and then the index finger would be around the winding or some of you may have the grip like
Ben. Okay so we want to have our fingers really relaxed and and then we're going to have the thumb
slightly touching this side of the frog also curved and very very loose.
So just hold your bow like this shake it out make sure you can move it very freely.
Now let's try to do some exercises together so we can move our bow like this up and down right
and then we can move it like a windshield wiper like that very gently
all right and then we can use it to stir a pot of soup.
Very nice okay great so now we're going to transfer this on the instrument so everyone
just gently drop your bow like this on the string and I want you to find the second string to the
left the D string so drop awesome and try to wiggle your strings with just your hands
great and then we're going to pull like this making a circle
with the sticky strings and then
wonderful this direction from frog to tip is called a down bow now let's do the opposite
direction which is called the up bow so what we're going to do is we're going to start from the tip
rest your bow on the tip make sure it's nice and sticky and then push
yes and then now let's try to pull these together so first play a down bow like this
without lifting your bow I want you to feel the stickiness here and then
a little bit faster
very nice together so first me then you
so this is a song that we did in the last lesson the whole process so we are going to play that
with the bow but first let's just review it by doing the pizzicato just plucking the string
so let's try it together ready one two three four
okay just this much with a bow we'll start on the three one two
one more time
very nice let's try to do it by plucking the strings one two ready and
two ready and
that is how we use the to put it together with the left hand and then to play some songs together
