Are we skipping everything else and just going straight into Christmas?
Because hey, guys, welcome back.
Today feels like a day.
Oh, what is the word I'm looking for?
A day that I just want to do something fun.
Like I don't want to do any heavy lifting.
I don't want to move rocks.
I don't want to shovel compost.
I don't want to go scrape the the entryway.
So we're getting ready to start that whole transformation
in the front, in the entryway.
And so I guess like I need help, like scraping all of this paint
that I've painted on over the years before he starts standing.
And I'm like, that just doesn't sound like a fun thing to do today.
But what sounds like fun is going down to the garden center
and picking up some things for some fall containers in the back.
Like it's officially autumn, which I am in denial.
I feel like, no, no, no, no.
I need like two more weeks of summer and then I'll be in fall mode.
But I can start to like get into it more
if I have pumpkins and more fall colors in the garden.
So I think that's what we're going to do today.
Or at least that's how we're going to start out today.
You just never know what you're going to get with me.
And you know what? That's just how we roll over here.
So anyways, I've already cleared out our containers.
This is one of the urns that I want to get planted.
You guys, I am shocked because
all of the plants that we had in here grew like this massive root ball.
I took a little video last night because I was doing this like in the dark.
It was like 730 and it was already dark.
Anyways, I cleaned it all out.
I just ended up removing the entire thing.
I don't know if I want to do plants in here.
I'm thinking a pumpkin stack.
Like I've always dreamt about having an urn and like a pumpkin stack on top.
I don't know. I just think that'd be so cute.
And then we have this other urn right over here
that I think this one I would like to put plants in.
This was the same situation where it just filled in with all roots.
It was incredible.
And then I just came in this morning and just added some
potting soil in here and just got it ready for us.
And then the other two containers that I want to get planted up
are the ones where we have one persimmon.
And actually, the other one has a persimmon, too.
So we have two containers with persimmons.
Can you tell we like persimmons?
So those containers are right through here.
I kind of cleaned them out as well.
I did leave the coleus and I cannot remember this variety, but it's stunning.
I did leave the coleus and then the chocolate vine.
Listen, I am somebody who always likes to recycle plants as many times as I can.
So whether that's putting perennials in my garden, taking them out,
giving them away or putting them out in the landscape
or stretching our annuals into fall or other seasons, I'm going to do that.
That's just why not?
Like, why not repurpose plants if they fit the vibe?
The coleus is also looking good.
I'm not married to it.
You know, if we ended up having to cut it down, that's fine.
I will use it in an arrangement, but it looks so lush and like full and gorgeous.
So we can plan the color palette around this.
You know what? I really don't have an idea of what I want.
I'm just kind of going to see how I feel once I get down to the garden center.
That's just, you know, the type of feeling that I have today.
And then this is the other container that we're going to be planting up right back here.
So another persimmon.
This one is looking a little, it's not really doing much, is it?
There's no fruit on it.
It's looking OK, though.
I do want to come in here and just kind of clean out some of the roots.
I think I got it all.
And I'll just leave those on there and we can just let them compost in.
Anyways, so this one is really bare.
I didn't leave any of the plants in here because it was just reading too summery
with all of the color combinations that we had in here.
So took all of those out.
And then there's a couple of other containers like this rounded oval,
that one right there.
And then I should really get after the tomatoes, too,
because they're looking a little, a little icky.
This right here, I think.
I don't know what I want to do here.
I think it's going to be. Oh, good.
Those didn't root that great.
Maybe we'll just do that, too, while we're here.
Why not? Look at those worms, though.
Whenever I see worms like this, I take them out and I put them back in my garden.
I do not want to compost the worms.
I want them to stay.
You can see how these have like white fly on them.
So I don't want to spray for it this late in the season.
So I'm just going to get rid of it altogether.
My goodness, that is full of your debris.
All right, let's head down to the garden center.
I think we might go to two because not both have what I want.
I don't think we'll see what we find once we get to the first one.
And then we will come back and see what we come up with.
All right. First stop is that Al's garden center.
I haven't been here in a while, but I wanted to see what their pumpkins look like.
Now, these are not are like pumpkins for the entire season
because we are going to go out to a pumpkin patch.
But I wanted to get a couple of things for today.
Boy, this one is really cool.
Very warty, though.
See, I wonder if I can find like something about this size,
maybe even a little bit bigger for a pumpkin stack.
I want like a Cinderella.
I wonder if they have more
inside. My goodness, people have picked through these.
Gosh, am I late to the party?
What is happening?
Let's go see if they have any inside.
That one might work.
Their houseplants always look so lush.
Oh, stop it right now.
Look at this Christmas.
Are we skipping everything else and just going straight into Christmas?
Because, you know, I'm like the Christmas queen.
I love Christmas. This is wild.
I will say their Christmas displays are pretty unmatched
when it comes to like garden centers.
It's pretty, pretty spectacular.
Oh, oh, my gosh, so fun.
Oh, my goodness.
Too soon, guys.
But is it?
For, I guess, the Christmas people, it's not too soon.
All right, let's see if they have pumpkins back here.
Oh, some heucheras.
Haven't even thought about what our containers are going to look like.
And I know the colors are right here
are some of the specialty pumpkins.
Let's see.
I am just shocked at how picked through these guys are.
Let me sit you guys down and see what we can find.
I would typically not go for something like this because the stem is missing.
And I think one of the most interesting parts about pumpkins are their stems.
But for stacking, she might work.
This one might work.
And look at this.
I found a broken stem.
I don't think this is for this one, but I wonder if we can fake it.
Maybe it might require some glue, but maybe that will work.
All right. I'm actually pretty happy with their selection of plants.
So let's build something together.
I'm thinking a moody
jewel tone situation for one of the urns.
I am immediately drawn to this celosia.
I don't know, though, if this is going to be too tall and overpowering
for our container for the urn.
Is that going to look funny?
Trying to think, well, I guess if I can put it in the center, it might work.
It's kind of a short, chunky one.
Oh, this could work.
Let's see.
Trying to think of what I have at home that we could also use.
I have black mondo grass.
I think we could use that.
That there.
We need something else, though, and see how this kind of goes.
I don't hate that.
I think we need like maybe a kale.
Kale, maybe.
And some pansies and violas, for sure.
Let's see.
Well, I like that.
Could do like this.
Maybe no to the aster.
Hmm. When you're selecting a mama, don't buy these.
I mean, it could be exciting because all of the color, but buy ones
that are a lot more like buttoned up and bud
stage because you're going to get more out of these than you will
out of these guys.
Let's see what this feels like.
Hey, this could work.
And then like a little black mondo grass.
And then some cute pansies and violas.
I don't know about those, but these here.
Feel pretty good.
A lot to pick from.
Let's go look at their perennials for a sec.
I'm not married to the celosia.
I like it, but I just feel I don't know, maybe something a little bit darker.
I think I'm going to go with this black forest cake coral bells.
And I'm rethinking this.
This is too much.
Let's find something else as our centerpiece.
You know what?
Something dark would be nice.
I still think the black mondo would play well.
Some sedum would be lovely,
but I don't like any of these.
Well, she could work.
Let's see who looks better.
You probably look the best. Yes.
OK, we're building.
We're building the look.
Let's see, who else do we have?
Hmm, we need something tall and dark.
I don't want to do a big grass.
It's kind of meh.
You know, I do have a snake root at home that I think we can use
instead of this.
Maybe that's the direction we'll go for this container.
So I'm going to put this guy back.
I think we will skip this mum.
Do this and this
and then some of these.
So is that the color?
Hmm, or are you the color?
I don't know.
Kind of like that.
Maybe we will do like a plummy color as well.
Just play with that when we get home.
I keep it being drawn to this color right here.
Just look at how gorgeous that is.
Oh, my gosh.
That is a beautiful coral bells, isn't it?
Look at the reverse.
Oh, stunning.
It's like we need these for our garden somewhere.
We want to get these.
I think we should get these.
Let's see. Shader PM shade.
Maybe we should get these three.
We could just like hide them somewhere
in the garden, right?
Let's just take them for now.
We put you guys down and gather a few things.
We'll be easier with two hands.
All right. I like the color story that we're building here.
There's a variety of things.
So this is where I landed.
Let's take them home and plant this up.
I think I have the vision.
I hope I have all of the plants that I need.
I'm very excited for this.
All right. Here we go.
Plants secured.
Hey, guys, I snuck in to Hobby Lobby really quick
because I needed
some of this Aspen wood collection.
This is not like the exact thing I'm looking for,
but I can make this work.
$4.99, that's not bad.
Sometimes these things can be so spendy.
I feel like this is pretty good.
You also know I'm like the moss queen, and I'm so tempted
to get more moss.
But I think this makes more sense.
OK. Actually, I lied because this is $4.99
and it's very specific.
I feel like we can find that for cheaper online
where this is $8.99 and you get a whole ton of it.
So let's go with this guy.
All right. Let's start out in this back container here.
And let me just quickly go over some of these plants.
All of these are annuals, except the Heuchera.
So this is a Penicillium rubrum.
It's actually really beautiful.
Looks like a purple fountain.
Purple foliage with reddish seed heads.
A great accent grass for borders and containers.
This is not hardy, and they can get three to four feet tall
and wide. They require full sun.
One thing about fall containers.
I mean, I guess this is true for all containers with me
because I just pack everything in.
But with fall containers, you can really push
your container and your plants to the limit
because you're not really going to put on much size.
So I'm not even going to add any biotone or anything like that.
I feel like it still has residual nutrients from summer,
which was yesterday, technically.
So I'm not really
going to be concerned about adding any extra nutrients in here.
I mean, if anything looks a little bit sad, we could always just do like a
give it a little bit of a feeding when we water.
These will be just fine.
And you know what?
I feel like I'm going to need something over here.
Maybe some ajuga,
I think, in this space.
This heuchera is Delta Dawn Coral Bells.
This one requires shade or PM shade.
Grows about eight inches, hardy down to minus 30 degrees.
I really love it because it's a really bright wine color.
I was thinking
a spilling, something spilling over like creeping Jenny,
but the nursery didn't have any.
It had like kind of like a little one and it just didn't look that great.
So that's why I decided to go with this one instead.
And it's actually really nice.
OK, this is really interesting.
I don't know anything about this plant.
There's no tags on it.
I just think it's so interesting.
It has these like lobed kind of concave leaves.
And look at those sweet little yellow flowers.
Little bright color situation.
Let's come in with some of these darling cool blue tone.
Handy, look at that.
And I didn't think I was going to go with it because it kind of reads summer to me.
But I think against some of the other plants in here, it's going to look really nice.
This is a juga black scallop.
These are ground cover that I'm going to be planting out in the garden.
So these are going to be in here temporarily.
And then we will bump them out into the landscape.
I've had these for a bit, so they look a little, little raggedy,
but they'll be fine.
OK, so I don't think I'm going to keep this coleus,
but I might just actually like pop it up and like a little terracotta
and just keep it until frost, because it's so beautiful.
This is a really beautiful astro.
I haven't worked with this one either.
This is lilac sunset.
It's very different from the other astros that we saw.
It's definitely a lot fuller.
I like the texture of this one better
because it's just so different.
And then just look at how dark those leaves are
with that lilac popping through.
That is gorgeous.
And then we just have some ornamental kale and ornamental cabbage.
And this is that changeling corbels.
This one will get six to 16 inches tall and wide.
It's hardy down to minus 20 degrees, and it will take shade or PM shade.
And this is one that we're also going to put back into the landscape.
So we got three to tuck in somewhere.
I could come in with a grassy texture, but I don't think I want to.
Maybe I do want a grassy texture in there.
Let's see. Oh, yes.
Well, I don't know.
Let's let's put it in there and see how we feel.
This is the golden
Japanese forest grass.
What if just put you right over
and then just kind of
tuck you in the back.
You can kind of. Oh, yeah.
I think I like that.
So this is a really interesting plant.
This is a snake root and it's a pink spike.
This is a variety of this one.
I have three of them that I want to plant out probably near the shed.
These will do better in shade because it is cooler.
I think they're going to be fine in this space.
And again, they're not going to be in here for very long.
So I'm going to plant it kind of
in the middle and see how it goes.
I'm tempted to just leave it in its nursery can.
Maybe not, though.
Well, no, I'll put the specs up on the on the screen for you guys,
but it's a really interesting plant.
I like the texture of it.
I like the foliage.
I like the flowers.
If you're into like goth gardens, this is your vibe.
It's very airy.
I think I got it last year during a sale
and it's still in its nursery again.
It's still living and happy.
We're going to come in with this dragon's blood creeping sedum.
This one says it can just get about three inches tall.
Doesn't say the spread, but I'm assuming it'll just continue growing.
It's already down to minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
Thinking let's pop the sedum out here in the front.
Oh, OK.
This is going to turn out to be my favorite.
I can already tell this ornamental kale.
We're going to pop in this black mondo grass.
This is actually one from Isley.
I love that they sell them in this size container.
These are perennial.
They get six to 12 inches tall.
They will spread and they're already down to minus
10 degrees.
And they require they can take sun and shade.
I think I'm going to put this towards the back
and kind of have it just peeking out.
Look at that.
OK, I'm not a professional.
This is pretty dang good.
I'm going to come in with some purple as well.
I also got this little cutie,
but I think we're going to reserve this one for something else.
Hey, guys, it's the next day we had major audio issues.
I didn't realize it until I started editing the video.
So we're going to go through this part of the video again.
And plus, it's better lighting anyway.
So it kind of works out perfect.
I'll show you my progress in just a sec.
I did end up taking down the pumpkins really quick
just because I wanted to elevate
the pumpkins a little bit higher on this urn.
So what I did is put in a container.
I put a saucer and then the first pumpkin.
You could probably just use like a regular plastic saucer
if you're going to do this in a container, whether it's like an urn
or any traditional shaped container.
I love doing pumpkin stacks.
I think they're so fun.
So let's go ahead and start stacking our pumpkins
and bring in our Spanish moss again.
I love a pumpkin stack, and I especially love putting in moss
in between each layer.
You can do this with any like sheet moss, reindeer moss, anything like that.
I just think it's like elevates it even a little bit more.
So you're not just doing just a full pumpkin stack.
So and as we put in the second pumpkin,
this will just like peek out a little bit.
And I ended up finding more pumpkins.
I feel like this one needs to be a little bit bigger.
Yeah, see, this is the problem I had yesterday, too.
It just looks a little funny.
Nope. That's so cute.
I'll use this little spackle just to kind of
tuck the moss in a bit more.
This looks so darn cute.
I, I love that.
Well, now I'm more in the fall spirit than I was before we got started.
Here's our container in the entryway of the cottage garden.
I love this so much.
You know, it was so beautiful having those summer colors in here.
And I love the potato vine, but it just covered the entire urn
and it kind of took away from the beauty.
And I love to be able to see it, especially when we walk in.
Like, I love that.
That's one of the focal points of the garden.
And I wanted to show you because I completely forgot about this who crib,
which is fine because I can just use this in another container.
I think the Mondo grass was a better choice anyway,
because it provides a different look and a different texture.
We already have the snake group and then the pansies.
They already have nice broad leaves.
So this could work.
But I think the Mondo was a better choice.
Super happy with the colors.
I love that we brought in a little bit of yellow
that kind of just plays off of more of those fall colors.
But I think this still works really nicely with everything that we have in here,
just because it's bringing in or pulling some of that like great
like that burgundy jewel tone from some of the other plants in the container.
Sergei actually saw this this morning and he loved it.
He was like, this is probably my favorite one you've done so far.
So happy with that.
And then, of course, our pumpkin stack is just so cute.
I just think it's so charming to do this.
If you have a container and you don't want to bother with plants,
you know, do a pumpkin stack.
I think it's just such a fun way to bring in fall.
And I will leave my pumpkin stacks all the way.
Gosh, until we start really taking out our Christmas decoration,
I kind of wish I would have gotten them a little bit sooner
because I love to enjoy our pumpkins for several months.
But either way, I'm happy that we got these
and I cannot wait to go out to the pumpkin patch
and just bring some more to like spread around and decorate the whole garden
and really feel those fall feelings.
I guess if we're transitioning into fall, I really have to have more pumpkins
so I can really feel it.
Now, these containers back here also just turned out so great.
And I'm actually happy that I got to show you this
because it was getting a little bit late last night.
So it's good that we're doing this again.
This container to me just turned out so beautiful.
I love the warm color that's pulling from the hookah again
against some of the cooler tones.
I think this does work really well,
even though we're kind of blending in the warm and the cool tones together.
That aster has to be one of the coolest ones I've seen.
I am very excited about these and it just it's full of bugs.
So it's going to fill in really nicely right here.
So I love that container.
I'm curious to know which one you guys like the best.
And then lastly, this one is probably the most I would say untraditional,
but it's still pulling in a lot of fall,
even though we have this really beautiful kind of cool tone blue.
Again, the yellow kind of plays off the throat of these pandas.
So it works really well, the hookah.
And then, of course, our as you go, we'll kind of fill in.
These are only going to be here temporarily
because I will be using these in the landscape
as some ground cover in different areas.
And of course, that plays really well with the grass.
Of course, the hookah also works because it's pulling in
some of those burgundy tones that we see in some of the other plants.
The coleus that we had in that other container,
I just potted it up in this container here.
So this will just kind of live on the deck temporarily.
Actually, this rusty bench that we got at that estate sale
may be a little bit too tall for this area,
but we'll just have it up there for a little bit.
Oh, that's cute, actually.
Against the Makawa maple.
That's actually really cute.
Love that.
I wanted to give you a look at the pumpkin stack from this view.
So whenever we are going into the cottage garden,
we can see it straight ahead, which is, again, just the sweetest view right now.
I'm so happy that I got to do this.
It was just fun to have like an off day and do something fun
and not, again, moving soil or rocks or this or that,
just enjoying the season in the garden and doing something pretty.
I do need to put on my big girl pants right now and then go start
helping Sergey with that project because we want to get that done right away.
So it'll be nice to have that area buttoned up and then we can start
decorating the entryway as well for fall.
And then, of course, Christmas, because I can't wait for Christmas.
And also, I cannot believe how packed ours was.
I was pleasantly surprised.
I didn't think that they would have so many plants.
I was I was shocked at the selection. It was wonderful.
So anyways, I hope you guys enjoyed today's video.
I hope you're all leaning into fall more than I am.
I'm still like fighting it.
But this definitely, again, helps out with that transition.
Thank you guys again so much for hanging out with me today in my garden.
And I will see you guys in our next video. Bye bye.
