Video Summary
AI GeneratedHBO is moving forward with *Aegon's Conquest*, a prequel series set roughly a century before *House of the Dragon*. The project focuses on Aegon the Conqueror and his sister-wives as they unite the Seven Kingdoms. With George R.R. Martin deeply involved in the writing process, the series aims to balance epic dragon spectacle with grounded, personal emotional narratives.
Long before Game of Thrones delivered its final divisive episode,
HBO already had its eyes
firmly set on the future.
Westeros was never meant to end with Daenerys,
Jon Snow or the Iron Throne
melting into slag. George RR Martin's universe was simply too vast,
too layered and too rich,
with untold history for that.
Among the many spin-offs and prequels announced over the years,
few have sparked as much curiosity and patience as Aegon's Conquest.
Now after years of quiet development and industry rumours,
the project is finally beginning to feel real.
In this video we'll be reviewing every new detail
that's been brought forward
and we'll be revealing them as well about
the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series,
Aegon's Conquest.
When Game of Thrones premiered in 2011,
it quickly became more than just a TV show.
It turned into a global obsession,
redefining fantasy television and pop culture at large.
Set in the brutal, politically charged world of Westeros,
the series chronicled the power
struggles of noble houses, clawing for control of the Iron Throne.
But as expansive as the show was,
it barely scratched the surface
of the lore Martin laid out across his novels,
companion books and fictional histories.
That depth is exactly why HBO began plotting an entire
franchise while the flagship series
was still airing several projects were announced quietly
cancelled or retooled over time aside from House
of the Dragon most never made it past the
development stage Aegon's Conquest
however has survived that winnowing process and now it's
officially moving forward yeah Aegon's Conquest
but here's the latest news the most exciting
recent update doesn't involve casting or release dates
but something arguably more important George
R.R. Martin himself.
According to series creator and writer Mattson Tomlin, Martin is deeply
involved in shaping Aegon's Conquest, offering guidance,
clarification, and a direct line into
the heart of Westerosi history.
Tomlin has spoken openly about how surreal it feels to collaborate
so closely with the architect of the entire world.
So rather than distant approvals or filtered
studio notes, the two are in frequent contact,
often texting back and forth. For a project that's
so rooted in lore, detail and historical consequence.
The level of access that that gives could make all
the difference. So here is Tomlin's full statement.
I'm kind of shocked that he knows who I am and
anytime that I get a text message
from him I'm like it seems incorrect that you text. I feel like
we need to correspond through handwritten letters
and I need to hire a calligrapher. Of all the
creators, of all the cool people that I've gotten to meet
and gotten to work with, I haven't worked
with anybody that has done what he has done
to really truly create a universe with such depth
and breadth going and meeting him i just had
to be honest i've read your books i've seen the shows
and i'm not an encyclopedia of it i have only come
to this as somebody wanting to be entertained
and now i'm coming to it as a potential creator in doing
so i feel like it's incumbent on me to
acknowledge that you're the one that's done all of this we're all here
because of you dude i really
take this as God is speaking to me. I really do.
Because at the end of the day, any question
that I could have, anything I don't understand,
there's a god who has the answer. Tomlin also
revealed that his approach to the story goes far beyond dragons
and spectacle. He's aiming to ground
the conquest in emotional reality,
exploring how massive political upheavals affect families,
cultures, and ordinary people caught in the crossfire.
I figured out a way to make it personal,
and a lot of what won me the job was relating it to real life
and talking about the Romanian Revolution
and talking about my mother
and talking about sometimes a conquest can happen
and it can be very good for the people
that are being quote unquote conquered
but also it can split apart families
and I had things to say beyond the dragons come
and that's not an easy thing to do
because you're also trying
to do a faithful adaptation in which the dragons come
and so having something to say that was really personal
I think that that's why he in part chose me
and so was I nervous to get the job? Of course because
for me it's kind of like you want these jobs
but then if you get them then there's this moment of
going well now I actually have to do this.
Perhaps most reassuring is Tomlin's confirmation that the
script is actively being written
and that Martin remains closely involved every step of the way.
I'm in the middle of writing the pilot right now.
I'm in touch with George all the time and I feel
really really lucky to just have the god of this world in my texts
and i can just shoot him a text
and go what does this mean please help me
and then he'll send me an encyclopedia of information
so it's all with respect and reverence
and just what i want more than anything is to make this
show and have it to be something
that he's extremely proud of so when was Aegon's Conquest
confirmed while Aegon's Conquest may feel like
a brand new announcement the project has technically
been in the works for some time.
It was first revealed in April 2023, though the news was easy
to miss amid a flood of other Game of Thrones updates.
Early reports even hinted at the
potential feature film that would set the stage for the series,
but that idea appears to have
been quietly faded away.
For much of 2023 and early 2024, progress was slow. The show remained
in early development, with little to show beyond
the hiring of Tomlin as writer. And that's what
makes recent updates so meaningful.
Tomlin shared a photo on X, formerly Twitter, that subtly but
clearly signalled momentum.
The image showed a workspace set outdoors, overlooking a sunlit town.
On the table sat a laptop, a notebook, a mug,
and a copy of Fire and Blood, Martin's in-universe
history of the Targaryens,
and the primary source material for the series. It wasn't flashy,
And it didn't need to be. The message was simple.
Aegon's Conquest is being written right then.
Aegon's Conquest story details end.
So where does Aegon's Conquest take place in the timeline?
Well, in terms of the timeline,
Aegon's Conquest goes farther and further back than any Game of
Thrones series so far. The story is set roughly
a century before the events of House of the Dragon
and nearly 300 years before the rise
of the Stark-Lannister conflict. This is the moment
when Westeros as we know it was forged.
The series will follow Aegon Targaryen, later known as Aegon
the Conqueror, and his sister wives, Rhaenys and Visenya,
as they launch a campaign to unite the
Seven Kingdoms under one rule.
Armed with dragons and an unyielding belief in their destiny,
the Targaryens wage a brutal transformative war
that reshapes the political and cultural
standpoint of Westeros forever.
What makes this era especially compelling is its contrast to
House of the Dragon. Now,
while that series explores the internal rot and eventual downfall
of the Targaryen dynasty, Aegon's Conquest shows its terrifying rise.
It's the beginning of the
Iron Throne, the origin of the Targaryen dominance
and the foundation upon which every later conflict
rests. So when will Aegon's Conquest be released?
If you're wondering when Aegon's Conquest might
finally land on HBO, the short answer is not anytime soon.
But the long answer is a bit more
encouraging. The best way to estimate its release window
is by looking at how House of the Dragon
came together. HBO officially announced that series in October 2019
and it didn't premiere
until August 2022. That's nearly a three-year gap
from confirmation to release. Using that same
timeline, Aegon's Conquest, which was confirmed in April 2023,
would most likely arrive sometime in
2026, possibly even later.
And that's assuming everything moves smoothly. There are a few
factors that could easily push it further down the road.
For one, HBO currently has multiple
Game of Thrones projects in development,
and that means resources, budget, production crews,
visual effects teams,
they'll all be spread across several massive productions.
Aegon's Conquest is also expected to be especially demanding.
This is a story defined by large-scale
wars, right? Dragon battles and sweeping destruction,
all of which require longer
shooting schedules and extensive post-production work.
Another thing to consider is the writing
process. So far, Mattson Tomlin
is the only confirmed writer attached to the series. By
contrast, House of the Dragon Season 1 had a full writer's room,
which helped move the script
along more efficiently.
If Tomlin continues working solo, development could take longer,
unless HBO brings in additional writers later on.
There's also scheduling to think about.
HBO is unlikely to release two Game
of Thrones spin-offs too close together.
If House of the Dragon continues dominating
its release window with future seasons,
it will almost certainly take priority.
Still, despite all these moving parts,
Aegon's Conquest is clearly gaining momentum.
And while it remains in early development,
the progress so far suggests that a release will
be within the next three years.
It is very much possible,
and for fans of Westeros, that's a promising sign.
And if HBO, Tomlin and Martin get it right,
Aegon's Conquest could become one of the most defining entries
in the Game of Thrones universe yet.
So, what do you think about this prequel?
Will it be worth the hype, or will it be one of those hyped failures?
