Today on the Dr. Oz show.
Don't be fooled by fake online beauty products. These counterfeiters, they're using the cheapest possible ingredients.
This is sometimes what you're getting. Glue? Glue. This stuff can get very, very ugly.
We investigate how some bogus brands are smuggled across the border. Plus, are you sabotaging your marriage?
Either we got to fix this or go. Oh, it makes me sad.
Coming up next.
The internet has turned the skincare business on its head, with sales of beauty products skyrocketing online by billions of dollars and
decreasing at the malls.
But with convenience and lower prices of online shopping, you may not be getting what you think. And the results can be hazardous to your health.
So today we're investigating online fake beauty products. Let's get started.
Ready for season 10? Yeah!
We brought this issue of counterfeit beauty products to our attention, and beauty expert Denise Caldwell, who has tons of followers,
and a lot of your followers have been duped by fake beauty products.
So the question then becomes is why now? Why are you concerned, Whitney?
Why'd you bring us to our attention with these fake products?
You know, I am the one who actually treats these patients in my office when things go wrong. I see the side effects.
I see the problems that arise from using these counterfeit beauty products on your skin, and it can get really ugly.
Denise, why are these so appealing to shoppers right now? You know, Dr. Oz, gone are the days of paying overpriced at department stores.
You know, customers bypass the experience of
sometimes a snooty salesperson, or they're actually trying to up pay them with products that they don't need, that they didn't come in for.
So they're bypassing that with the new thing of going online with the click of a button. That experience,
they can get it sometimes same-day delivery, and let's be honest, people like a deal.
They're getting plenty of them, but are they really what they're paying for? Explain what these fake products are.
So we're talking about
cosmetics and skincare products that may look and feel so close to the real thing, but they're not. They are not authentic products.
They're not made with safe ingredients in the proper concentrations, the proper ratios.
You know, when a reputable
cosmetics or skincare company sets out to formulate and manufacture a product, they care about safety.
But these counterfeiters, they're using the cheapest possible ingredients.
They have no regard to the consequences on your health.
They are in it for one reason, and one reason only, and that's to make a profit.
If you cheated one thing, you cheated a lot of things. That's the bigger concerns as physicians. Come on over here. Let's demonstrate.
We'll show people what you actually mean by fake.
And I must say, I look at these a fair amount because I'm fascinated by
the skill with which people can get conned. Oh, yeah. I look at these two,
just the outside parts, and I really can't tell much of a difference. They look pretty similar to me.
It can be extremely, you almost have to be a detective, right?
So if you look really closely at these labels, first
you want to look at the color, and you want to look at the graphic, and you can see how this one turns almost from
like a little bit of a greenish to a blue, whereas this one's a little bit more blue.
I mean, super, super subtle, right?
But you also want to look at the font, and you want to look at the spacing. And what they put online isn't the fake bottle.
What they're putting online is a picture of the real bottle. Right. You can just compare it to the real bottle half the time,
you might be able to tell. However, the bigger issue, the bigger opportunity to detect counterfeit is probably on the inside.
Because they're not gonna spend any money on the inside. All they care about is the outside to get you conned in.
So go inside with us. So you want to take a look. The first thing you want to do is you actually want to
smell it. Because the smell might be slightly different.
But then you also want to take a look at the color.
Because you can sometimes tell a little bit, just a subtle difference in the hue or the shade. It's not obvious, right?
But side-by-side you can tell. This is expensive to make. I guess this is the real one, yes.
But you also want to look at the consistency and look at the texture of that product.
So for example, take a look at that one versus, you know, here's the authentic right next to it.
I mean, that's a completely different texture and consistency. So if you're lucky, it'll be this obvious, this difference.
But, you know, you really have to sort of play around with these products and interact with them to detect the counterfeits.
And the problem isn't just that this may not work as well as the real thing.
It may have things in it you don't want, like hidden ingredients that end up in beauty products that you don't want.
And they can cause all kinds of issues. Let's start off with acne cream.
Absolutely. So acne cream, you know, you go and you're purchasing that online and actually this is sometimes what you're getting right here.
Glue? Glue.
You gotta be kidding me. And you know, glue on your face. I mean, can you imagine?
The other thing is it causes confusion. Did you tell the truth, right?
Now people aren't telling me the right thing. And the company making the real product gets messed up
because now people are having bad reviews of their product because they're not actually getting it.
So it disrupts the entire industry, which is a concern because you want to reward good guys and penalize bad guys.
OK, how about face oils?
So face oil, you know, it's a great trend right now. You're using that on your skin.
Well, this is what people are getting, alcohol.
The opposite of what you want.
Exactly. And the great thing is like, you know, face oils are great for your skin.
They help with your skin. They make it clear, you know, give you good moisture.
But then alcohol just strips it right away. That's, you know, scary.
Lipsticks. Lipstick, which is one of my favorites.
But lead in your lipstick.
Just imagine, you know, and people are harsh when they give you the reviews and say,
I bought this and then it didn't, you know, it's not what it paid for.
And lead is toxic to you.
There's a reason that remember those rules about getting paint out of homes that had lead in it?
Because kids were eating it.
Same thing. Kids play with your lipstick with lead.
They'll have the same side effects, which is loss of blood.
You get anemia. It's a problem.
Now, eyeshadow.
Bacteria in your eyeshadow.
Oh. E.coli, different things that's just, you know, in your eyes.
You know, if you wear contacts or glasses, it can be really hazardous.
Foundation, which is a favorite of all women, you know.
Paint thinner. Paint thinner?
Oh, my goodness. Exactly.
So it's very disturbing.
And, you know, I really like for my followers and people, when I talk to them and say,
hey, I use this product and I say exactly where they can purchase it,
but then they go online, you know, and everyone loves a deal.
I understand that. But these are the things that are in there.
I'm even OK with online if it's the real thing you're buying,
which is part of the issue, which we'll get to.
Right. What makes you really angry?
It does. So you click the checkout button, right?
And actually wait your brown box at the door.
You might be getting the junk we just talked about.
And it matters.
Dr. Bowe brought one of her patients here today.
Danielle has a habit of trying out brand new beauty products,
which have resulted in some complications,
encounters with bad reactions from bad products.
So before I get to what has happened to you and others,
walk me through what your experience has been like with these.
I buy everything online.
So I'm a working mom of three.
And it's just, you know, I buy the first thing in the store
and I never have time afterwards.
And I always feel like I love this product so much.
Let me just go online, click buy.
Don't even have time to really read much up on it.
And then it comes to my house and I also don't have time to return it.
So. So what can go wrong if someone uses a fake product?
So many things can go wrong, as Danielle has experienced firsthand.
And we've talked about it in my office.
But here's some examples.
So, you know, you can see something really subtle.
It can almost look like a little bit of irritation, right?
I mean, this patient, you can imagine that she probably thought
she was just breaking out a little bit of acne.
Maybe she thought she ate something that was triggering her acne.
She might not even put it together.
It's hormones, right?
It's just hormones.
Or maybe I didn't sleep well or take off my makeup.
But look at this one.
So this is something I've also seen in my office as a result of using counterfeit.
This is a serious infection.
In fact, I have cultured staph aureus, which is a known human pathogen
off of the skin of patients who have used counterfeit products.
If this is not treated quickly, it can actually scar.
It can even enter the bloodstream.
This stuff can get very, very ugly.
What do you think about that picture, Danielle?
It's terrible.
Isn't it horrible?
It's terrible.
To thought you might pay money to have that happen to you.
Right. It's upsetting.
So what's your message for the many viewers out there
who, like you, have experimented to try it around and been burned?
Don't do it.
Go back to the store, buy the original product.
And, you know, people are trying to sell things that are fake
and it can really harm your skin.
As Dr.
Bo saw on my skin a few times when I've gone back to her office,
we figured out it was products I was using that were not real.
And it's expensive to fix the problem.
It can be dangerous.
So there's a lot of reasons why you may not be getting the bargain
you're looking for.
Fake products online.
How are these fake beauty products getting online in the first place?
Where are they coming from?
This is this is actually a global issue.
It's a global epidemic.
These products are being manufactured mostly overseas
in these giant factories, these warehouses.
The conditions are anything but clean,
but they're also made in people's basements, in their garages,
in their bathrooms.
These products have actually tested positive for urine
and even fecal matter.
I mean, it's it's outrageous and it's disgusting.
And you just don't know what you're getting.
Danielle, what do you think?
I think that is, I mean, it's unbelievable that they would sell something
and you could put that on your skin and that's what's in it.
So our cameras were given unprecedented exclusive access
to see how these counterfeit items are smuggled into the country.
So we followed the DEA as they caught fake beauty products
coming across the border.
My name is Alden Aprio, chief officer with Customs and Border Protection
in the port of New York, Newark.
The men and women of Customs and Border Protection are tasked
on a daily basis with examining cargo that comes into the country
and ensure that that cargo is legitimate.
We need to ensure that counterfeit merchandise is stopped at the border
and doesn't enter into the commerce of the United States.
Those containers that are targeted for possibly containing counterfeit
merchandise are brought to this warehouse for further examination.
This merchandise has come over from China.
It's said to contain cosmetic and perfumes.
We're going to take a look and see what we have inside the box
to make a determination
whether or not it's legitimate or counterfeit merchandise.
We're going to pull out one of the items,
which is clearly a high end perfume.
Remember, this box came from China,
but yet the labeling indicates that it was made in France.
We'll take this to our import specialist to make the final determination.
So based on the totality of what we have so far,
I would say that this is going to be counterfeit merchandise.
Counterfeit health and wellness products
present a threat to the American people
because you don't know where it was made.
You don't know what components are within the product itself.
And it's not just perfume that we have concern with,
but everything on these tables has already been determined
to be counterfeit merchandise or is pending determination.
If you're buying merchandise at discount or on the web at a very low price
and not at a known location or store,
there's a very high chance that it's going to be counterfeit
and also that it could actually have a negative impact on your health.
Listen to the DEA.
When we come back, an industry expert working with law enforcement
around the world to track down and stop these online skin scammers.
It's going to give you the best tips to avoid fake beauty products.
That is next.
Twas the night before Christmas and all in the oven
was a smell of ham roasting.
The family was loving.
This is your all purpose.
Make everybody happy ham.
But what's in this cured ham?
I don't like this product word.
No, because that could be a whole lot of stuff.
And what should we know?
What's a water product?
You tell me.
For your holiday ham tips.
Watch the Dr. Oz show.
Happy Holidays.
Cheers to the doctor.
That's coming up on Monday.
Before you click checkout on your online shopping cart,
we're going to be showing you how to protect yourself
from counterfeit beauty products that could hurt your skin and your health.
Expert Laura Miller for the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition is here.
The international organization trying to rid the Internet of these fakes.
So who benefits from what you do?
Well, really, everybody, Dr.
Oz, as you've seen, counterfeiting hurts everybody.
And that's why we work closely with law enforcement,
industry partners, of course, consumers and our brand members
to fight fakes all over the world.
Now, I was surprised to hear you think that these scammers
are really serious criminals.
I thought they were a fly by night little operations.
Oh, no. These are massive criminal organizations.
They create these products in deplorable conditions.
They are extremely harmful products, and it's a humongous business.
In fact, about one point two billion dollars in counterfeit goods
was stopped by CBP alone just last year.
And that's just the stuff we know about.
CBT is Border Patrol.
Exactly. Customs and Border Protection.
And this money is being used to fund other extremely bad acts,
drug trafficking, even terrorism.
So it's really important that we work together to stop them.
It's also our patriotic duty.
All right, so I've got three tips to help protect all of you
who are buying goods for making sure they're not bogus beauty products
when you get them.
So please jot these down.
We'll put them up on DrOz.com just in case.
So first off, don't just trust the customer reviews. Right.
So just like there can be fake products, there can be fake reviews.
You really want to actually look at the place that you're buying
these products from.
Do they have a good FAQ page?
Do they have a customer service line?
And of course, do they have a legitimate return policy?
Because you might want to take advantage of that if something goes wrong.
This is a huge area that I didn't even know existed.
But a lot of the reviews you read about, they're fake.
Absolutely.
Even the rating groups are fake, which is making it really unwieldy.
You know, think about if I was going to destroy someone else's company,
I would do that.
I create a fake review about them.
So people apparently are doing that on purpose.
And you guys are criminals.
OK, next up, inspect the packaging.
We talked a tiny bit about that earlier, but this is a more sophisticated view.
Sure. Well, it's really about making it easy and accessible.
Look at that safety seal.
Make sure you're looking to avoid the spelling errors.
It's never bad to keep that empty in your cupboard so that you can compare it.
Look online at the real brand's website and compare and contrast.
Make sure there's packaging at all.
Also, those informational pamphlets that go in with the products
are a good source of information.
You'll see a lot of little mistakes there
that'll really direct you to whether or not this is a legitimate product.
Again, these are not mistakes made on purpose.
You're catching sloppy errors they're making.
So you've got to look carefully.
An extra little letter, bad punctuation comes in handy
that you studied English in school.
And finally, if the price is too good, well, probably is.
You said it all.
If the price is too good, it's probably a fake.
A lot of websites will say things like, oh, we have a direct manufacturer
connection or we're importing from Canada.
These are just lies to trick consumers.
All right. Here's the thing.
Laura says the best line of defense to taking down a counterfeiter,
which is a patriotic dude we have now, is in your hands right now.
Your hands. How do folks help at home?
I can't stress this one enough.
Always report if you find a counterfeit product, even if you're not sure.
Call the customer service line.
And of course, take advantage of that return policy.
It can be really easy to just throw that bad product in the trash
and accept the fact that you're out 20 bucks.
But if you take a moment to return it, you're taking money
out of the counterfeiter's pocket, putting it back into your own
and preventing future harm as well.
And a lot of times, once they have your credit card,
they'll use it to charge more things against you.
So if you return it, you get to stop that earlier.
Thank you very much, Laura. Thank you.
You can find these tips plus a guide to buying makeup at the drugstore
at DrRoz.com. Please take advantage of it. We'll be right back.
Up next, are you sabotaging your marriage without knowing it?
A new type of relationship intervention you don't want to miss.
To be sabotaging your relationship and not know it.
Renowned psychologist Dr.
Jordan Peterson is here with a new type of relationship intervention
that everyone has to see.
He's one of the most influential thinkers out there.
And while deemed controversial by some, Dr.
Peterson's work has resonated with millions of couples all around the world,
selling out books and lectures by tens of millions.
Today, he's breaking down his biggest rules for living
happy and healthy relationships that might just surprise you.
Thank you very much for being here.
So he says one of the biggest focuses
is that you have to actually maintain the sanctity of marriage.
And he once said, if you're not all in, you're not married.
These are pretty provocative statements.
Why do people find this controversial?
Well, I think people are afraid of confronting the real problems
and conflicts in their life.
And no wonder.
And they want an out.
They want an option.
And you can understand that.
But the thing about marriage is that unless you're in it for the long run,
it's very difficult to be desperate enough to solve the problems properly.
Otherwise, if you always think you can escape,
if that's always in the back of your mind, then you're going to be able
to avoid engaging in that difficult problem solving process.
I think the reason that some people get uncomfortable with your advice
is it's brutally honest.
And when you talk about these issues that are usually black and white,
like living together before you get married, which has become so common,
you take a firm statement saying, well, that just means that you just
want to be able to compare what you got now for what is else out there.
That's painful for people to hear.
Yeah, but I respect the fact that you're telling the truth as you see it.
And I want folks to hear this wisdom from you.
Then you guys decide how to use it in your lives.
The biggest mistake couples are making today in America.
Again, this is a major focus of your work. What is it?
Oh, I think they underestimate the degree to which marriage is also
an economic and practical relationship.
It's going to be how the household duties are distributed.
It's going to be discussion about career.
It's going to be discussion about finances.
It's going to be discussion about how you raise and discipline
your children and your priorities.
And that's work like like running a business is work.
You have to you have to think strategically and you have to learn to negotiate.
It's very hard for people to negotiate.
And that's an undervalued skill.
We heard from our next guests.
I knew they were in need of an intervention.
Stacey and Tracy have been married for seven years.
But the chaos of everyday life is threatening to tear them apart.
Take a look.
Stacey and I met actually back in high school.
We were high school best friends.
Pretty much inseparable.
After school, we kind of went our own separate ways, did our own thing.
And then, of course, through the magical power of Facebook,
we found each other again.
And then I told her, let's just go to dinner.
Went to dinner and been together since.
My marriage was awesome when we first got married,
but it's just slipped into like we're roommates.
The communication is gone.
The affection is gone.
She's my best friend.
We did everything together.
We would go camping, motorcycle rides.
We used to go on love dates.
And now it's like we don't do anything together on a daily basis.
We kind of get in little arguments or tiffs.
We have different expectations of what we want from each other.
And not even on the same page or even in the same book sometimes, so to speak.
Sometimes I beat him down.
So it's like he doesn't want to try.
I do feel underappreciated.
I feel like she's given up.
Either we got to fix this or go.
Things have got to change.
Oh, it makes me sad. Sorry.
I have the divorce papers printed out already, and he knows it as well.
And it's not that we don't want to fix it.
We do. We just don't know how.
I want it, but how do I save it?
Stacey and Tracy, join us now.
Tracy, what's it like to hear what Stacey was saying?
Real, but hurts.
It hurts, Stacey.
It's disappointing to me
because I don't want to be the stigma of going through divorce.
We're still quite young.
I know there's better out there.
I just miss my best friend.
And Tracy, why did you want to be here?
I saw how emotional it was for you to watch
your wife speaking about the marriage.
It's just the speaking, the pictures of what we had.
Miss it.
Like she said, I just want my best friend back.
You want some help?
Yes.
Up next, what Dr.
Peterson says could be the intervention that every marriage needs right now.
I need to see your license and registration.
We see the badge.
We know the uniform.
But what if they are fakes?
Can you tell the difference?
The dangers of falling for imposter police.
That's coming up on Tuesday.
Things have got to change, and I'm mature enough now at this point
to know that I can walk away, too, if that means his happiness.
I'm not going to be selfish and just worry about me.
Oh, it makes me sad. Sorry.
I have the divorce papers printed out already, and he knows it as well.
We're back with clinical psychologist Dr.
Jordan Peterson and Stacey and Tracy are also with us.
They say their marriage is in trouble.
And today we're asking the question,
are you sabotaging your relationship without even knowing it?
Stacey, I was caught off guard when you said
that you'd actually already printed out the divorce papers.
Why haven't you signed them?
Because there's always that hope.
There's always the glimmer of hope that we can change.
My heart's still in it.
I just don't know how to put the pieces back together to make it right.
Dr. Peterson, this is a challenge that I think we're seeing all over the country.
You're an expert in this area.
So I hand the ball to you.
Well, there's lots of things that are positive about your relationship
that are obvious right away.
I mean, the first is, is that you have the grounds of real friendship.
The second is you both actually appear to want this to work.
I think a lot of your problem is actually practical, to tell you the truth.
And I would say it's also not so much a matter of global change.
It's like I see things that aren't that aren't working in your marriage
that will sink a marriage.
So, for example, people need to talk to each other for about 90 minutes a week
just about what they're doing in their lives and their problems.
You need that.
And you need to have a date like at least once a week and probably twice a week.
It's absolutely crucial.
And then it's also the same with reestablishing a romantic bond.
It's like you're not romantically entangled right now
because you're alienated from one another
and you might not want to get close physically.
But this isn't a matter of wanting to to begin with.
It's a matter of having to in order to rekindle what's going on in your relationship.
And so I would say and the last thing I would say is it's probably useful
for you guys to sit down and figure out how to distribute the duties in your life
because it's a big part of your life.
And I would say to what you should do practically,
since you do appear to like each other and you want the relationship to work,
is to start micro negotiating so you know who's responsible for what.
And you want to fight and argue about that till you get it straight.
I've heard you say that that don't agree to things you don't agree to.
Yeah. Yeah.
Well, that's a great that's a great negotiation.
Is that something you think is happening?
Do you feel like that, either of you?
Mm hmm. Oh, yeah.
OK, so so here's a hint about that.
So it's OK to say no to things.
You want to only say yes to things that you agree with,
especially when you realize you're going to repeat them endlessly.
Right. So you have a right to say, no, if you're an agreeable person,
then which is our personality trait associated with warmth and compassion,
it's really easy to try to please someone else.
And you can tell if you're doing that too much, if you get resentful.
You know how terrible that is.
And so even though it's a battle to do that negotiation,
it's way better than ending up in the situation that you're in.
What about all these small things?
Well, that's that's another thing, you know, people think, well, we shouldn't fight.
It's like, no, you should fight a lot, but you should make up.
So you fight because there's problems like who should do what?
That's a big problem.
How are we going to handle our finances?
That's a big problem.
How are we going to handle our mutual careers and the trouble of having children?
Of course, you're going to argue about that because you don't see things the same way.
Think, well, but what you want to do is you want to argue towards peace.
Fight, make up, make peace, make an agreement, move forward.
And then fight again and then fight again.
Yeah, well, eventually what will happen?
The fights will get farther apart and then they'll decrease in intensity.
That's what will happen.
But that can take a long time.
So there's more.
So when we come back, Dr.
Peterson's couple intervention is going to continue.
Plus, we got the number one marriage rule.
Dr.
Peterson says will stop you from sabotaging your relationship.
And it might shock you.
I love getting to talk with you on my show every single day.
But when the cameras stop rolling, the conversation is not over.
I still have a lot that I want to talk about.
So download the Dr.
Oz podcast on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
You've been asking the question,
are you sabotaging your marriage without knowing it?
Dr.
Jordan Peterson is back along with Stacey and Tracy,
who've been having communication issues, significant ones.
Peters has been workshopping with them.
And he says the next step is not only for Stacey and Tracy, but for all of us.
Number one rule that everyone needs to do right now,
no matter what, if they are sabotaging their relationships, is
strive to maintain the romance in your relationship.
The romance?
Yes.
Well, and strive, you know, which is a funny way of thinking about it,
because people tend to think that romantic interludes will be spontaneous.
It's like, well, you don't think that when you're dating, you plan a date.
You take someone somewhere nice.
You set up the romantic situation.
You think, well, I don't need to do that when I'm married.
It's like, yeah, not if you want the romance to disappear.
Then you don't have any for the rest of your life.
It's a very bad idea.
So you have to think carefully about how often you would like to interact
with your partner romantically, and you have to make it part of your life,
a routine and something that's even somewhat predictable.
The spontaneity will come if you get practiced and excellent.
So and maybe it's a little stilted and wooden to begin with,
because you're planning it.
But you'll get over that, man.
It might take a year.
But if you're married for 50 years, who cares if it takes a year?
But in perspective, Stacey and Tracy, how do you feel about that?
I've heard you talk about about your friendship,
but the romantic absence is clearly impacting both of you.
I think that like Dr.
Peterson said, if we start planning dates, you know,
I think it'll all just come back.
But we got to actually put forth the time to do it.
We do a little exercise that Dr.
Peterson told me about.
You have a little boards that you can pass that along.
Yeah, well, this might be useful with regards to reconciliation.
So what I'd like you to do is to just think for a moment
and then write down something about the other person that you really like.
OK, because there are obviously things that you like
and that brought you together to begin with.
So let's try that. OK, like a little gift, I suppose.
All right. All right. Don't look at mine.
Just while you're writing.
So if 80% of marriage is the logistics of marriage,
raising the kids, paying the bills, making sure that, you know,
people get to work on time and 20% is the romantic part.
Why do we why does that part disappear earlier?
Why does that?
Well, because once you start to confront the problem with
with having a serious relationship with someone is that life is serious.
And so you have to understand that romance is a very difficult thing to kindle.
And you have to put it you have to put space aside for it.
And even if it doesn't seem like the most pressing issue at the moment,
you have to remember that you're in this for the long run.
And so you want to develop habits of romance
that will take you through the decades.
And it'll decrease the probability that you want to stray to.
It's very important to do this.
Let's take a look at who wants to go first.
Doesn't matter.
Ladies first. Go ahead.
I wrote these.
Oh, you gave four.
Well, those were my top four.
You only had to give one.
Oh, four. That's good.
Good. Yeah, that's a good sign, Tracy.
Funny, sweet, devoted and eyes.
Well, that's good.
So you've got some physical attraction there.
So that's the last one.
Funny. Well, good, because you can use some humor in life.
Sweet. Well, that's warmth.
Right. Devoted.
That means you can trust him.
That's also a really big deal.
So those are nice traits, I would say.
So, Tracy, match that wrote a little smaller, but
eyes. Well, there we go.
You do both have beautiful eyes.
I noticed that we laugh.
OK, so that's something interesting, because you obviously share
this this ability to delight in life and to be humorous.
And usually that's associated with the trait extroversion.
But that's a great thing, because life is difficult.
And if you can laugh about it sometimes, well, then you can transcend
that difficulty. And that's a huge thing.
So that's a big positive force that you both agree on.
Obviously, you both need to have some fun together.
You might think, well, we don't have time for fun when things are so serious.
It's like, no, you probably want to have more time for fun
because things are so serious.
That's what it looks like to me.
Beauty. Great.
Well, that's another element of physical attractiveness is another real strength
of your relationship, is that you both do actually find each other
physically attractive.
So you have that spark.
You have a friendship. You have a spark.
That's a good thing.
You share things in common.
You like each other.
It's like, well, you're estranged.
OK, well, so you have to work to get rid of the estrangement strength.
Well, that's also good.
So it was also remarkably easy for both of you, by the way,
to generate four positive attributes about each other.
And I didn't see any sign of anger or resentment when you were doing that.
So I think you're estranged.
But that that there's something at the bottom of your relationship
that's stopping you from signing those papers.
That's actually quite intact at a fundamental level.
Before you walk off the stage today, what do you want to tell your wife?
I miss you as my best friend.
I want to do whatever it's going to take to keep this.
I just want my friend back.
You can hear more Dr.
Petersen's book, 12 Rules for Life, An Antidote to Chaos.
He's also on my podcast, a whole series of programs.
I think you'll find very illuminating. We'll be right back.
Ready for that?
It's the Dish on Oz, our brand new food series.
Make it tasty.
Dafty Oz and Friends.
We're serving it up every Wednesday.
The Dish on Oz.
Talk what you are doing right this second,
because if you're one of the millions of people
who are shelling out money for prescription medications,
and more than half of you are,
you can't afford to miss out on a powerful new tool
that will make shopping for your meds a lot easier and cheaper.
Regardless, if you're uninsured, underinsured, listen carefully,
even have full insurance, this is a big moment for all of us
because technology has finally caught up to give you the power
to save right at your fingertips with an app.
It's a new feature on the ShareCare app called ShareCare Rx.
It's going to change how you buy medications, because right now,
not everyone is getting the best price you could be getting.
In fact, take a look at the medication money myths
corresponding to your Brown Uncovered.
Fifty five percent of Americans take prescribed medications regularly.
Now, most of us have insurance and we pay for that with a copay.
But surprisingly, many of us are overpaying for our medication
and we don't even know it.
Now, you know the price for your favorite cup of coffee, a book, even your car.
But we don't know the cost of our medication that we're taking every day.
So you recently changed pharmacies.
I did, and I was so extremely surprised that the price of my medication
changed from one pharmacy just to the other.
You know, it's interesting.
A lot of people don't know that prices can change not only from state to state,
but neighborhood to neighborhood, and that can really affect your bottom line.
So let me ask you this.
Do you comparison shop when you're looking for, let's say, shoes
or electronic products or clothes?
All the time.
I want to know what the different prices are even before I leave the house.
I know you said you've been having a hard time
finding good prices for your medication.
Tell me a little bit about that.
I know what my medication costs.
I have the copay for that,
but I'm having an issue trying to figure out
what's the cheapest price where I can save money.
Guess what? I have an app for that. Really?
There's an injustice happening.
Some of you are leaving your prescriptions at the counter
because of sticker shock, which makes us a life or death situation.
Why care so much about this?
One in three of you don't take your meds, often because of high costs.
But all that can change today.
My partners at Sharecare teamed up with CVS Caremark
to give you the breakthrough technology to access affordable medications
through Sharecare RX.
It's part of the Sharecare app, which you can download on your smartphone
for free at the App Store.
Now, the first way this tool is going to help you save money
is going to allow you to compare prices and lock down the best ones.
Let's show everyone the power of savings that they have at their fingertips.
Tia's back. Give us an example.
So let's say you put a beta blocker, one of the most common medications
you guys take for blood pressure and heart issues.
And if you want to look for the best beta blocker in your area,
how do you do it on the Sharecare app?
All you do is put in the name.
You look for the dosage that you're taking.
It has your zip code already in there.
And guess what? Automatically, it pulls up.
Oh, my goodness.
All the pharmacies within 10 miles, at least 50 options.
This is a great way to price search.
And you'll see it starts at seven.
The seven dollar range goes up to eight.
You can judge based on proximity, but most of all price.
We love comparison shopping for everything else.
This is the best way to make sure you're getting a great bang for your buck.
So here's the thing.
You may be getting other discount cards or savings programs.
That's fine, right?
I saw the same medication for seventeen dollars in some of those.
It's almost half the price.
Now, I want you to look at one more.
One more that I know is pretty expensive in a lot of places.
It's a medications used for insomnia.
You guys are using these sleeping pills a lot, sometimes more than I want you to.
But I checked into the cash price on this thing.
And, you know, before I tell you that, tell me what it would cost
if I did it on the Sharecare app.
Six dollars and seventy five cents.
And look how quick it was.
Yeah. Fifteen seconds.
Pulled it up. Fifty options.
Six dollars and seventy five cents.
It's a great bang for the buck.
So the price that I saw went up to sixty eight dollars.
Wow. Wow.
That's ten times difference.
Sixty dollars in savings.
These are realities that a lot of people knew about but didn't know how to do.
Finally, the Sharecare RX tool may help you find a lower price
than you'd pay, even with your insurance, because sometimes the cash price
can even be cheaper than, you know, than what you can pay,
no matter what kind of insurance you have.
So you're never going to go into a store from now on without knowing the price
upfront. That's big news.
21st century technology has finally caught up.
Now you can also do more.
You can actually just walk into a pharmacy.
In fact, 67,000 pharmacies, 67,000 pharmacies all across the country.
Just walk into one, right?
All the major chains.
And you can save up to 80 percent off the retail price
with the discount card that's basically the Sharecare app.
And I checked the most common medications, guys.
Look at this.
These are the biggest problems that you guys write to me about.
You know, medications for, you know, blood thinnering,
medications for water pills, medications to help with what with all kinds of things.
There's another beta blocker, a cholesterol drug, lots of medications.
The tool also works for drugs that are not covered by insurance,
like drugs used for hair loss or some of the medications for weight loss.
The money could go into other areas as well.
You could actually have more money
if you save here to spend on things like better foods for yourself
and even exercise and gym memberships.
Even if you are currently using a drug savings card,
even if you currently have one, right, this is great
because it should be the second opinion price check for you
to make sure you're buying from whoever has the best price in your area.
Because I think what we've done so far, what I've been able to learn,
this is as good or as better than anything else you're going to find in the competition.
So the next reason why Sharecare RX is a powerful tool for your health
is that it has multiple ways it can track your meds.
Now give me an introduction to Michelle.
And Michelle, you say you struggle a little bit when it deals with the reality
of just keeping track of what the heck you're taking in your body.
Yes, yes.
Actually, I do have to take muscle relaxers for pain.
And I also have other medication that I take.
So it's a struggle to keep up and they became very expensive also.
So the expense part we just helped you with,
because I think you can benefit like a lot of other Americans will
by understanding these systems.
But help me with the issue of keeping track of what medications when so you don't mess up.
Absolutely. You're like many Americans who are taking multiple medications.
The great thing about the app is once you log it in, it not only gives you reminders,
it gives you the dosage not only to remember to take it.
But say if you go to another doctor's appointment or see another specialist
and you don't remember exactly what you're taking, you can pull it up.
And it's a great resource.
Again, super quick, super easy.
It'll be a great asset. Wow.
That's what it looks like.
So actually, you just saw a little shot on this monitor.
So you actually see the color of the pill.
It gives you advice when to take it.
The kind of things that you wish you already had,
but it does it automatically to let us know what you're doing.
Easy, easy. It's very, it's helpful.
Finally, it's going to be helpful.
Technology confuses you half the time.
So good price. All of your meds here.
Yeah. Whatever doctor you go to, whatever health appointment,
because we know people are also doing other things like going to see a nutritionist.
You might go to see your OBGYN or another kind of doctor.
Everything in one place. In one place.
I can just pull it up and it tells me a different time and different
dosage and things like that.
Oh, wow.
Because drug, drug interactions are a big problem for us in medicine.
This can help.
Now, in order to make sure that you have all the information you want,
you got to actually put it in the system.
That's going to help you do that.
There's one other way.
Shared Care R can help you save money because it focuses on your lifestyle,
which no other app can do like it can.
The Shared Care R app has all the health tools that you need in one place
so you can get off the medications, ideally, that you don't have to be on.
Right. So, for example, if you look at the monitor,
you'll see there's a whole bunch of categories that it will lead you through.
And then let's focus in on the one for steps.
You can see it there.
And then the steps category, you know, you'll know what you did.
And then because you have that next to sleep, next to stress,
next to what you're eating, all that fits together.
Does that sound like it might be helpful to you guys?
Yes. Very, very good.
Let me just approach you here.
So I just showed you a couple of things that it can do to help you.
It can get you inexpensive drug pricing.
I can make sure you don't mess up taking the right medications
when you're supposed to be taking them.
And hopefully it'll nudge you to be healthier so you can get off the medications.
So how would you be able to use this in your day to day life?
Well, Dr. Oz, every morning I do a nasal irrigation.
I had sinus surgery. I used two medicines.
I ran out of the dexodermazosone, which is so expensive.
Even with insurance, I instead of walking around carrying coupons,
I will now have this app to tell me what drugstore down the block I can go to.
And so I don't have to go through all the names
and show the pharmacist and look over for coupons.
It's a game changer.
Thank you for putting it all together because you're the classic person
who would benefit. Thank you.
To download the free ShareCare app for our partners,
which has this new ShareCare RX feature, just go to the app store.
It's free. Take advantage of it.
Guys, share with the people you care about in your life.
Most of us will drive a benefit. We'll be right back.
Twas the night before Christmas,
and all in the oven was a smell of ham roasting.
The family was loving.
This is your all purpose make everybody happy ham.
But what's in this cured ham?
I don't like this product word.
No, because that could be a whole lot of stuff.
And what should we know?
What's a water product?
You tell me.
For your holiday ham tips, watch the Dr. Oz show.
Happy holidays.
Cheers, good doctor.
That's coming up on Monday.
I adore this time of year because of all of these.
We all brought in gifts today for a cause that my whole family supports.
Marine toys for tots.
My uncle was a Marine, actually is a Marine,
because once you're a Marine, you're always a Marine.
And there are so many other fearless men and women
who serve our country as Marines, as other military.
So I'm proud to help in any way I can.
Last year, they, along with the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce,
asked me to be the Grand Marshal at the 86th Annual Hollywood
Christmas Parade.
Take a look at this holiday flashback.
Merry Christmas, everyone.
And welcome to the 86th Annual Hollywood Christmas Parade.
Here is America's favorite on-air doctor, the one and only Dr. Oz.
We appreciate you being here and you being our Hollywood
Christmas Parade Grand Marshal.
We want to present you with a certificate of appreciation
for all that you do and for being our Grand Marshal of this parade.
Thank you very much.
Congratulations on being our Grand Marshal on the 86th anniversary.
Well, I'm honored to be the Grand Marshal.
I'm honored that the 70th anniversary of the Marines started this great organization.
And I love the fact that all these wonderful folks have served the nation
and put their life at risk, but they also make a difference here at home.
So God bless you.
And it's you.
I had an incredible time last year.
This year, I passed the Grand Marshal baton to Nancy O'Dell.
There she is, who will be hosting.
Look at that. Wonderful time.
Anyway, you can see this year's Hollywood Christmas Parade full.
The whole thing, a two hour special, December the 14th on the CW.
It's superbly well done.
It's a blast for the whole family.
If you'd like to make a difference in a child's life this holiday season,
buy an extra toy and drop it off in one of the many Marine
Toys for Tots collection sites in your community.
You can find drop off locations at toysfortots.org.
