Hi my name is Darren, I'm a design engineer at DMM
and we're at the DMM stand at Friedrichshafen in 2018.
I'm going to talk you through the new Dragonfly cams.
The Dragonflies are a range of small cams
that we've got, six different sizes
and they will go from 7.4 millimetres on this green one, the
smallest one, all the way through to this purple
which actually overlaps very nicely with the
Dragon size one, the Purple Dragon.
So you can see here we've got an extendable sling on these
and we've got a nice compact bar tack pattern here
which actually means you can clip and pull
through on either side of the sling
which is quite a nice feature when you're gripped you don't want
to faff about with which side to pull you can just clip any one
and pull through we've got a
thumb loop on these ones so these are more of a specialist cam
so we decided to put the thumb loop
in as these are more likely to be used for aiding
so that thumb loop gives you that short clipping
point which just saves you a little bit of extra length
so you're closer up and higher up there
we've got a really nice ergonomic thumb press
and trigger here and that's helped with the
centralized suede which means the cables are all
in line with the center of the cam so when you
pull it you get a nice smooth even pull that's nice
and straight and it's not wanting to buckle
to one side down here on the bottom we've got what i call
the trigger bar that's nice and slim and
compact so it's actually when you've even on this small this size here
when it's fully cammed this
is still smaller than the cam head
which means you can just place this fully deep in a crack
and it's not going to interfere you can place it however you like,
it seats in really nicely then.
We've got a really flexible stem in all of these cams
which is great for when they're in
those awkward little places and you can't quite orientate them right,
they'll just bend around
to help you reduce your rope drag
and that combined with the triple grip on the lobes
really helps minimize walking.
The lobes have got a 13.75 degree camming angle which we found
which is the same as camming angles on the Dragon cams.
We found that's a great combination of
range and holding power
so we've kept it for the Dragonfly cams. The lobes are made
out of 6082 aluminium which again is the same as on the Dragon cams and
that's a slightly softer alloy of aluminium and that actually gives
you a really good bite into the rock
for those more delicate placements that you
often have with these smaller cams.
The final little bit is we've got a really
narrow headwhip here. I think
this is the narrowest headwidth on any cam that
four lobes cam that you can buy so that's great for filling in those
fiddly scars or pockets or small cracks.
In terms of strength, this green one here
will be 5kN and with its 7.4mm range that will actually make
it the smallest rated cam on the market
when it's released. Going through the
sizes, you're going 6kN, 6kN, 8kN, 8kN and 10kN. So these will
be available in spring 2019.
They will RRP for £64 each.
