Hello everyone and welcome to the channel, this is a practical video and I want to talk to you about snow chains
why they should be used, when, how they should be used and above all let's see how they are mounted in a very simple and fast way
before continuing with the video I invite you to share the channel and subscribe
and above all let me know what you think of the new shirt that I will use to make the videos with the Leicoltec logo
let me know in the comments on Instagram, on Facebook what you think
So, as anticipated, let's talk about snow chains, what are they?
Snow chains are usually steel devices that are mounted around the tires of our car
to help traction in difficult snow conditions, especially fresh snow
if you have summer tires on board, but also if you have winter tires in particularly difficult situations
So, first of all, there are many types of snow chains
the ones you see here in this package are the classic 9mm rhombus
there are also spider chains, canvas socks that are not homologated
so these are the most widespread type for all self-chainable cars
and some particularly tight sizes of the shirt also for non-chainable cars
in any case you will find all the details on your car in the user manual
So, first warning, when are snow chains used?
Snow chains must be used in all conditions in which there is snow on the asphalt
obviously if you have summer tires on board, so not designed for snowy driving
such chains can also be used in the case of winter tires
if the snowy coat is too dry or too important, the use of snow chains may be required
in fact even those who have winter tires should have a couple of spare chains in the trunk
they must be mounted obviously before a difficult situation
in order to avoid creating chaos on the roads or dangerous situations
Second point, where should the snow chains be mounted?
Snow chains generally in cars with front or rear wheel drive must be mounted on the driving axle
on the driving axle of your car
so in the case like this, for example, front wheel drive on the two front wheels
in the case you have a rear wheel drive on the two rear wheels
making a mistake in mounting the chains in this way is equivalent to not having them
absolutely useless
so be careful where you mount your chains
and if you have doubts, check the manual of your car for use and maintenance
surely it will be written there
small detail for all-wheel drive cars
I made a video on all-wheel drive cars, I leave it at the top left and also in the description
the case of all-wheel drive cars is much more delicate
it is certainly prescribed in the best way in the manual of your car
how to put the chains
sometimes it is advisable to put them on all four wheels
instead on all-wheel drive cars that prefer in normal situations one of the two axles
maybe even only in that axis
but anyway it is a too generic speech
for safety, check the manual of your car
third very important point
how to choose the size of the chains
to choose the size of the chains it is very important to know the size of your tires
to do this, I made a video on tires, I always send it here
in any case, it is important to read the size of the tire
width, wheelbase, thickness and diameter of the rim
for example, this car has 195, 55, 16 inch rim tires
so you should try to mount a chain that is compatible with this rim
the sizes of the chains are compatible with more tire sizes
so let's say standard chain sizes can be mounted on different sizes of tires and rims
different combinations
you usually find a label in the box of the snow chains
in this case divided by the inch of the rim
so this will be compatible with rims ranging from 14 inches to 17 inches
but with specific tire sizes
so you have to choose the chain in the right way
if it is too wide, the assembly will be loose
so during the movement on the snow
you will risk breaking the chains
and especially to twist them around the axles
and in any case they would not perform their function
if they were too tight
instead, you would have a lot of difficulty in the assembly
they would be too tight and would not work at best
and in any case it will probably be impossible to mount them
in a situation with a lot of snow around
it will be very difficult to mount them
and in any case they do not work well
obviously they are homologated and you will also risk a fine
if they are not suitable for your tire size
for many of you, perhaps mounting a chain will be a very complicated operation
you would need to move the car back and forth on the road
lose tens if not hours of time in the assembly
and also risk freezing your hands
in reality it is an operation that is done very quickly
the chains can be mounted with the right technique
even in 30, 20, 30 seconds
always bring gloves with you
because the hands on the steel and the chain
with the cold and the snow in contact with the snow
will freeze you
personal experience, already tried
so don't do it
and let's see specifically how this type of chain is mounted
which are the most widespread, the most suitable for traditional cars
so we are here in front of the wheel
first thing, let's open the package
in the package you will always find the mounting instructions
and some extra ties in case they have to be broken to adjust it
you will find two chains in each package
one for the right wheel and one for the other wheel
first, first step
extract one of the two chains from the package
and arrange it in an orderly way on the floor
with the orange side on the left
obviously if there is very fresh snow, a lot of snow on the ground
try to make room around the wheel
smooth the ground a little so that it is easier for you
the second step is to bring this side behind the wheel
to get it out from this side of the tire
in this way
always bring this
this will come out from this side
pull the ties and the hooks a little
especially this red one
once you are in this situation
the wheel obviously has to be perfectly straight
bring the two ends of the chain closer
and try to get them up
until you can't attach them
in this way here
in this phase it must remain wide
so here in the front of the tire
second step, identify the hook
in this case it is this one
this hook usually has a different color
from the rest of the ties and the chain
and has a free end, that is, open
available to hook with the other side
at the same time from this side there is the other end
join them in this way
then once this part is hooked
this part of the chain is brought
hooked on the bottom of the tire
so at the bottom of the wheel
so that this is in this position
after having held this hook here
from the bottom
and from this side
the loop in which this part of the chain will pass
simply pull with a little force
let this red part pass
around this loop here
in such a way that I make a kind of cartwheel
to pull and tighten the chain
so let it pass in here
and try to tighten with force
obviously in this case
the chain can be hooked to another free end
but in this way it is obviously too wide
so use this eye, let it pass in the middle
pull with force
don't be afraid
this is a bit elastic
and hook it to the opposite end
so for example in this position
and voila, the game is done
as you can see the chain is very tight
it is placed uniformly on the entire tire
it will not move
and it was mounted in a very short time
if you watch the video
maybe various passages
you will lose a minute
if you want to be exaggerated
from when it is placed on the ground
without the need to move the car forward
this should not be done
if you hear noise while driving
maybe after a few kilometers of setting
this hook could be loosened
then unhook it
and pull a little more with force
and put it back in a position
so that the chain is even tighter
then precautions during driving with chains
first of all
do not exceed a speed of 50 km per hour
on snowy ground
if you are driving for example
or it happens in the tunnels
where the road surface is not snowy
but the outside is obviously
do not accelerate
do not exceed a speed of 30, 20, 25, 30 km per hour
as they give a lot of understeer to the suspension
and could cause strong vibrations
another precaution
if you see that the car
does not manage to face a slope
or a road even with the chains on board
do not force it
do not go too fast
to try to move the car forward
because the chains would break
obviously it happened to me
because of inexperience
and breaking it
obviously risks to twist
around the semi-axis of the wheel
and then it will be really complicated
to unravel it and lift it
in addition to being able to cause damage
moreover you will find yourself
a car without chains
in difficult conditions
so anyway I advise you
to bring a spare package
but avoid these situations
the wheels are perfect for driving on ice
they give you a lot of safety
with the front-wheel drive
as in this case
be careful of the behavior of the rear
because the rear does not have chains
and could obviously tend to oversteer
in the narrowest curves
so always drive carefully
very clean, very gradual
and still be careful of the movements
of the rear
on the contrary with a rear-wheel drive car
with the chains behind
to deal with curves with front wheels
without chains
it could be quite understeering
so always very gradual on the gas
and obviously on the steering
obviously to disassemble the chains
you proceed exactly in the opposite way
you disconnect the last one
this one
you put it inside the eye and it comes out
in this way
I recommend before disconnecting
this hook here
obviously before disassembling it
put the chain in a higher position
otherwise the chain will not come off
as easily
before disconnecting this
bring the part of the chain
which is at the bottom of the wheel
bring it forward
so disconnect this
disconnect this up here
slide it
and if the wheel rests on the chain
send a little forward or back
and extract it
in this case obviously I did not move
after using it
when you get home
it is advisable to clean it
obviously if you wash it with water
then dry it well
otherwise they would rust very quickly
remember gloves
and that's all for this video
I hope you liked it
that it will be helpful in these winter months
for any comment or curiosity
