Cal-Wake Forest Game Has a Grateful Dead Theme

Cal's game against Wake Forest on Saturday night in Berkeley will have a Grateful Dead theme. Cal is calling it the Grateful Bears. Grateful Dead deadheads are a very eclectic group. Any group that has Bill Clinton, Tucker Carlson, Walter Cronkite, and Jimmy Buffett as members is an interesting group of people, especially with its chief spokesman being Bill Walton, the late Bill Walton, who claims to have gone to nearly 900 Grateful Dead concerts. It's a group that it's not really been popularly known since Jerry Garcia died in 1995. So none of Cal's players and a few of their coaches weren't even born by the time the group became sort of non-existent in many people's minds. But it still carries some weight. And, of course, Cal, Chancellor Rich Lyons is a deadhead and can be seen in this story singing a Grateful Dead song strumming the guitar with a tie-dye shirt on. Great stuff. Now, could you imagine the president of, let's say, Ohio State or the University of Alabama or Texas A&M singing a song and wearing a tie-dye shirt regarding the Grateful Dead? Not likely.
