Please welcome back to the show our very good friend Anne Hathaway, everybody.
I'm so good.
How are you?
You are, you know, you're already having quite a year on the big screen, but you're really
having a, it seems like you're having a better year here in real life.
You've just announced you're having your third child.
Congratulations.
Wait, wait, wait.
How did you know?
Because you're glowing.
Oh, that's what it is.
Because you're glowing.
That's, no, it's all, that's all a neck up observation.
You must be very excited about adding a third to the brood.
It's amazing.
Yeah.
It's amazing.
I mean, we, we were, we knew what we were doing, but we were so shocked it worked.
We knew, and yeah, but no, we were just, we were so shocked it went this way.
So we're calling this one our buzzer beater.
That's great.
You got it in.
You got it in right at the buzzer.
Um, how, uh, do you need, I mean, I have three, I'll tell you.
I think again.
Yes, you have three.
It's the best.
I'm just so excited for you.
Do you have advice?
Weirdly, it just kind of, it goes on like autopilot.
Really?
Yeah.
It just turns out once there's three, just like there's not much you can do except watch.
Just accept it.
Yeah.
It just, it goes from like, it goes from like, you're just terrified and then it just
turns into like a TV show.
You binge.
Okay.
Oh, okay.
That's great.
Cause I love the channel right now.
So yeah, exactly.
You basically like every day you're like, Oh, new episode.
It's really fun.
And I was like, Oh cool.
New cast member.
It's a new cast member.
Then make sure you tell the first two.
You're like, we're doing this because you guys are getting stale.
That's what you said.
We got, we got a studio.
No.
You mentioned buzzer beater and I'm going to use it as a segue to the fact, another
exciting thing that happened to you is, is again, just as a fan of something else.
I mean, obviously people are fans of you and your work.
You were a Knicks fan.
Yeah.
Did you?
I mean, it was, it was like, it was, it was amazing.
Now look, I'm, I was rooting for the Knicks.
I'm not a Knicks fan per se, but I was rooting for it for the city.
Not, not all of us are.
Not all of us are.
Who are you a fan of?
It's not important.
The Boston Celtics.
And I think now you guys have the same amount of championships as us.
You think or you know Seth.
I know you don't.
No, but the thing, I was so great for the city, but I'm wondering like from the outside,
I was like so jealous.
It was like, cause it went so well.
Like the whole time it was like just wins, stacking wins.
In fact, people pointed out that, uh, from the premiere date of devil wears Prada two,
the Knicks went 12 and one.
Do you feel as though, do you feel, do you feel as though you had something to do with
it?
Honestly, I think it was all this kid.
No, because, um, because it wasn't just the Knicks.
My soccer team, Arsenal, also won the championship.
What a run.
Devil wears Prada was, what a run.
To be honest, devil wears Prada was because of you guys.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
They did that.
Thank you so much.
Are you, are you, are you superstitious about the way you work?
Like, okay.
Completely.
No, I, I'm not like not in a humorous way.
Yeah.
So that's what I mean.
So it was not like you enjoyed the results, but are you an enjoyable person to watch the
games with?
Oh yeah.
Okay.
Yeah.
No, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm fun to, to, to watch with particularly when they win.
Yeah.
I've actually, you know what?
I'm fun when they don't because I'm very like, I don't know.
I just, I've just, I'm very for them, but it was so exciting.
And then, you know, in products, you have a photo of, yeah, there's cat and I couldn't
help it.
He was like, he's cat.
And I just went in for a hug.
I was so happy.
And I was wearing really high shoes.
I was still like sternum.
Yeah.
He's also, you know, one of the things that's so, you know, magnetic about this team.
They're just the nicest group of peoples.
He's such a gentleman.
And he's also, he's a fan of so many things outside of basketball.
Yeah.
And he probably was, I'm going to venture equally excited to meet you.
Yeah.
No, but we, it was amazing because we like, he was there and so we just like chatted in
between shots and then we got to film our little moment and you know, they, they had
made it to the Eastern Championship finals right before we filmed this.
And so I was just describing the feeling I had like watching that.
So I have a line in it where I'm like, it was like, just made me so proud to be a New
Yorker.
Yeah.
And then it came true.
Yeah.
Which I usually get in trouble when I say that.
But, um, but, but, um, you know, but it did, it did.
And then it happened.
And like, now it's always going to be there and I can't, like, I just, I don't even know
what to say.
It was just, so I didn't have anything to do with it at the point, but it's still very
cool in my own words.
I think it's very cool.
And let me just say, uh, what's also cool is that we've talked about the Knicks.
We've talked about Arsenal.
We've talked about, are you having another baby?
We've talked about Delaware Products.
We haven't even talked about the Oz yet.
Come on.
And we're going to do that.
No, no.
We're going to talk about it.
We'll be right back with more from Anne Hathaway.
Ithaca's been without a king too long.
They want security.
From what?
People from the sea.
That's just traveler's tales.
All we know of the world is traveler's tales.
That's how we found out Troy had fallen.
Now they all tell stories of attacks by people from the sea.
And who are the people from the sea?
No one knows, but the elders wanted the good to be prepared.
Prepared?
I was lucky enough.
I got to go to a screening yesterday to see it.
And it's so fantastic.
You're so fantastic in it.
There was a very funny thing when we went in which makes a lot of sense when you get,
you know, the luxury of seeing a movie before it comes out.
One of the things they said was, you know, no spoilers which is a very funny thing to
say about The Odyssey.
It's like we don't want people to know how The Odyssey is.
No, no, no.
Don't give away the ending.
This is Christopher Nolan, this is your third movie with him, and it must be so gratifying
when he reaches out again, because obviously nobody's going to say no to him.
He has every option in the world, and so when he goes back to you, it just must feel so
nice to be able to collaborate with him again.
Oh my gosh, it's amazing.
It's incredible.
I got so lucky because I made The Dark Knight Rises with him when I was in my late 20s.
And then we made Interstellar, which I cannot believe that I'm in that movie.
I love that movie so much, it's so beautiful.
And then he made a bunch of movies that I wasn't in, so I was like, how come he didn't
say anything while we were in space?
But we would see each other, everything would be cool, and then yeah, I got the call.
It's very cool that you guys were on a break, and then he's like...
But the fact that he calls up, he's like, it's the Odyssey, it's Penelope, and I want
you.
What a cool, I don't know, what a cool part to be...
You can't say we were on a break when I'm pregnant.
I have like, the way my body just was like, no, we weren't.
He was just like, he was just like, in Dunkirk.
That's true, there were not a lot of great Anne parts in Dunkirk.
No, but it's the wildest thing, he's such, it's such a, it's just an amazing experience
being on his set, because as brilliant as he is, like, as amazing as that mind is, his
heart is just as powerful, and I think, so what, and I felt like on the Odyssey in particular,
what I saw was like, he built the movie with his mind, and then he directed it while we
were there with his heart, and that was just gorgeous.
There is, you know, there's so many incredible scenes on the water.
There's so much splashing.
This is the no spoiler?
When you read, yeah, when you read the Odyssey, you really underestimate how much splashing
there is.
Were you at all, you know, again, you're mostly, again, I feel like this is in the not a spoiler,
you're mostly on land.
Were you jealous at all that you weren't, because it does seem like it was pretty arduous
to shoot.
Oh yeah, I was totally jealous.
You would have happily been.
I mean, I felt bad being jealous, because I was very happy with my part, but I also
am a tomboy, and like, you know, my first film with him, I got to do a backflip out
of a window.
There's a lot of emotional backflipping in this one, but not any physical stuff, but
I did get to go out on the water, and so a couple times, and one of the times when we
got back, Matt was like, wow, that was the roughest day at sea that we've had yet, and
I was like, yes.
Oh, that's good.
So you can dine out with that.
It was a fewer number of times out at sea, but wow, I was there.
Really, that was when the sea was loud that day.
I'm very excited to see this movie with my 10-year-old son, because he is super into
Greek mythology, and I've heard that this was a big thing for you when you were a kid.
Oh yeah.
It's amazing how it just like, it ropes certain kids in, and they just go deep on it, and
that was who you were?
Yeah, totally.
I just, it was 8th grade, so I was a little older than your son.
It was Mr. Kramer.
He's very advanced.
So is mine.
So I was in Mr. Cahill's 8th grade English class, and we read them, and I don't know,
like something clicked.
I imagined if I was good at math, that's how I would feel about that, but I'm not.
And I just loved it, fell in love with it, and I don't know, it just never went away.
So I actually read Greek myths for fun.
Like that's, no, it sounds like a line for the movie, but it's a hobby.
I'm that kind of nerd.
And then, so when I got this, I couldn't believe it.
Like I just, it was just the colliding of so many, like it's almost a thing you don't
even know that it's allowed to want.
I think it's going to be a very cool movie for people to bring their kids to, because
I think a lot of them know the stories.
Like for me, it'll be so exciting if it's the first movie I go to with my kid where
he's not like, who's that?
Like if he actually knows from reading the stories, like who the characters are, and
I don't have to explain it over the course of the movie, I'll be so thrilled.
I would say this, whether or not I was in it, it's a spectacular film, like just in
your life.
I've seen it twice now, and just everything about it, Ludwig Göransson's score just gets
into your bones.
Chris's visuals with Hoyte van Hoytema is our DP.
Matt's performance.
It's unbelievable.
Sorry, this is so rude, you guys haven't seen it yet, but Matt's performance is jaw-dropping.
And it's mostly sold out.
So it's gonna be, like, I know we're saying it's coming out next Friday, you're not getting
tickets next Friday.
It's wonderful.
Hasn't this been fun?
This is the show, this is the show you came to.
It's the best.
You'll get tickets.
Stick around, we'll be right back with Alan Ritchie.
