The Little Painter of the jungle floor.
Deep in the damp shadows of Waigeo Island, the Wilson's bird-of-paradise stood no larger than a fist, yet he wore the entire spectrum of noon: a back of burning crimson, a collar of spun gold, and feet the color of deep ocean water. Most wondrous of all was his head—bald, glowing turquoise skin marked with a dark, painted double-cross that seemed to glow even when the canopy darkened. On occasion, he will flash his emerald-green breastplate, and coupled with his twin twirled violet, sickle-shaped tail wires, this is an amazing bird to watch.
