🔍 Video summary:

Here’s what you need to know to get a crisp, perfect direct-to-film print every time.

1. Avoid semi-transparency

Direct-to-film can’t handle semi-transparency. Since your design is transferred to the product from a PET film, you might get glue residue instead of getting a nice fade. That’s why solid colors always work best.

2. Avoid small details

It’s best to avoid including small details in your designs, such as narrow lines or small dots. Such elements might peel off the fabric because there is not enough adhesive to keep them stuck. The same can happen with designs that have soft edges. So, keep your artwork simple and bold.

3. Avoid large prints

Having the design cover the entire print area is not the best option either. When a direct-to-film print covers most of the fabric, it will feel stiff and plasticky, and the garment will not be breathable.

4. Use see-through elements in your design

The best option is to include see-through design elements. Don’t mistake this for semi-transparency. By see-through, I mean having empty space around and between the elements of your artwork. This way, less ink will be applied to the garment, resulting in a softer feel.

5. Use the correct color profile

You want your customers to receive products with a design that matches the mockup image from your store. To ensure accurate color representation for your designs, we advise using the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color profile. In most design apps, you can set the color space when creating a new project file.

6. Use the correct DPI settings

Nobody likes a blurred-out, low-res print. That’s why creating your design with the right DPI, ranging from 150 to 300 is important. DPI, or dots per inch, is a parameter responsible for the sharpness and detail of your print. So, pay attention to this setting when you’re starting to work on your design.

7. Use high-resolution images

Photography designs work well with direct-to-film printing because DTF technology makes full-color, high-quality images look clear and detailed. It’s ideal for capturing all the fine details and vibrant colors you see in photos, making sure they appear sharp and beautiful in print. To ensure your photo designs come out as intended, use images with high resolution.

8. Avoid black designs on black fabric

There’s one last thing that I want to mention. When creating designs specifically for black garments, remember that the printed black color will not match the fabric’s exact black tint and will look paler instead. So, it’s best to choose a different dark hue.

Now that you understand the basics of direct-to-film printing, you can try the DTFlex technique yourself at Printful.
