5 Seconds of Summer reveal their CHAOTIC voice notes from 'Everyone's A Star!' | Capital
Sep 27, 2026
You actually had a good explanation for this the other day.
Did I?
No.
That's a dog eating apples.
What's up chat, we're the pop collar boys.
It's not popping off.
I know, it won't pop all the way.
Make it pop.
I'm trying.
It just won't stay.
No, there you go.
Just hold it.
Hey, it's 5 Seconds of Summer and this is Voice Notes on Capitol.
Songs can start out as manic rambles, coming up with melodies.
It could be literally anything.
The lyrical content is totally flow state, so don't be judging.
If there's one thing that I know for sure is that the internet never judges.
So true.
So you guys are pretty judgmental players.
You guys are pretty safe.
This one's actually pretty amazing.
This is Luke humming the melody and kind of working out the verse melody
and stuff for the lead track on our album, Everyone's a Star.
The voicemail was labeled, Who Made You the Preacher,
which is one of the lyrics.
He was already onto it.
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do,
do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.
Who made you the preacher?
I'm the key.
Who made you the preacher?
Can I fall in love?
Oh, yeah, I love it.
I know I'm gonna meet you.
Can you see the goal?
I know I'm gonna do it all.
I wanna stay.
Nice.
Wow.
Let's do it.
So that's the verse of Everyone's a Star.
He nailed it.
Right off the dot.
I've actually already had that up at LACMA in Los Angeles now.
Here's the next one.
It's pretty self-explanatory.
It is a dog eating apples.
As you can see, the dog's really enjoying these apples.
Let's listen carefully.
That's good.
I'm hearing maybe Honeycrisp.
Delicious apples.
Granny Smith's.
It's a red one.
Pink Lady to me.
Yeah, yeah.
It actually coincides with another game we're playing.
Is it a dog or is it actually Luke?
That's we will not be sharing.
That's the next game.
That's what Luke sounds like in an Italian restaurant.
I'm just flat.
Dog eating apples.
So delicious.
I could eat them all day.
Granny Smith.
All day.
Pink Lady.
All day.
Pink Lady.
The dog-der.
No, from over Bill Withers' thing.
We write about all kinds of crazy stuff on Everyone's A Star.
One of the songs is called Evolve.
You actually had a good explanation for this the other day.
Did I?
No.
Yeah, no, I did.
I'm kidding.
Oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
So basically, I mean, this song Evolve is kind of like, I remember leaving the studio
and being like, that was such a fun time.
And also, we kind of wrote an amazing song.
You know, usually when you go into a studio, you write a song with it being like first
on your mind to write a song.
But that day, everyone was just hanging out and having a great time.
And we happened to write a song.
And so yeah.
Here we go.
Ready?
That's a dog eating apples.
My bad.
Lock it.
This is Evolve.
Did you play doggy?
But do control, oh my God, I love you.
You make me evolve, evolve, evolve, evolve.
Is it like, I wish I could?
Yeah.
That's good.
Obviously, we reworked that.
I kind of like we tried to go for the evolve repeat.
You were vibing.
I hear the flow state.
I think we were coming over to the UK to play some acoustic gig or something on the third
album for Youngblood and there was a beautiful song called Lie to Me. I'm not sure if this was
before we recorded it, this might have been when we were writing it, I'm not sure. Let's find out.
Nice!
Wow!
Where did this come from?
It's so beautiful.
Wow!
We've reclaimed the boy band tag, we've taken it back, we're using it to empower us and it's a
little ironic and we're in the UK, you can edit this out, we're taking the p***. This is a song
called Boy Band. We're writing this song, we're coming up with the pre-chorus I think. Nice pop
colour. Can you pop mine too whilst I play this? Actually, can we all pop colours for this one?
So obviously the viewership just doubled. Tripled actually. What's up chat, we're the pop colour
boys. It's not popped enough. I know, it won't pop all the way. Make it pop. I'm trying, it just
won't stay. No, there you go. Just hold it. You look good, you look like a Sith Lord. Here's a
bit.
I like that melody. I like that melody. I like that melody. I like you singing a melody and
then saying I like that melody. That's how confident you are. Also, you gotta sell yourself
in LA man. You gotta be like, look I got the hot melody right now, we're the pop colour boys. And
it worked because it became the pre-chorus. We should have just made that. It sounds good like
that. So Mike, if I may, this has been Voice Notes. We're 5 Seconds of Summer and everybody
send in a recording of your dog eating apples. Well Billy Big Balls was a really bad boy.
When you guys were making the album, which was the hardest song to write?
And right there, what you're hearing is amazing journalism. That's journalism at its finest
actually. And who asked us that question? You know what, that's a perfect impression
of someone that asked us that exact question. Oh is it? Yeah. I guess what we're getting at here
is we wish they gave it a little more energy. It would be amazing if they gave a little more
pizzazz. Like they do over here. Yeah exactly. Hello, it's 5 Seconds of Summer. We're gonna
be showing you our voice notes because that's what the people have asked for and we're gonna
blow this case wide open right now and just really get down to the bottom of how we got here.
And this is a really long intro. Hey we're 5 Seconds of Summer and this is Voice Notes.
Oh that one was perfect.
