Ladies and gentlemen,
we've had a very large earthquake in the Miramar Sea,
right southwest of Istanbul.
And this came in at a magnitude 6.2.
They have it coming in at a 7 on the shake map.
A 7 on the DYFI, a yellow on the pager,
and a default depth of 10 kilometers.
Now, this was not the only powerful earthquake
in that general area today.
Let's take a closer look.
And upon a closer examination,
it looks like we've had five earthquakes in this general area.
We had a 6-2, get that off of there,
a 5-0, another 5-0 here.
A 4-5 and a 4-0, so five fairly powerful earthquakes.
Like I said, just southwest of Istanbul, this is Istanbul here,
from the Marmara Sea, and this is the Black Sea here.
A strange place that I haven't seen any activity.
I don't know if there's a fault that goes through there,
but we'll soon know in two seconds.
I headed over to volcanoesandearthquakes.com.
We'll go ahead and zoom in on this quake,
they have it as a 6.2 as well.
Let's see Marmara Sea and they
also have it at default depth.
Actually the main source is the USGS believe it or not.
We have the Europeans coming in at 6.2
and RaspberryShake coming in at 6.0.
Zoom in and take a look at this area.
All right volcanoes and earthquakes.com are showing a much
larger swarm here than we saw on the USGS.
As you can see these are all 4.0s are stronger.
We'll put them all on. Wow we really have some
activity there. Definitely on a plate tectonic boundary
that is forming currently as you can see
running right through here in blue and black
which means halfway formed in blue and a pipe
drain or forming slowly in black here.
So you can see we have a real problem of no connection.
of these plate tectonic boundaries in this area
the good plate tectonic boundary are these red
lines that connect fully let's get some detailed
information about this particular 6.2 heading over
to volcanodiscovery.com we see that we have
a very strong 6.2 earthquake in the sea of
Marmara this is only 28 kilometers south
of Istanbul Turkey believe it or not
This is the capital of Turkey.
So, looking at some earthquake details,
a 6.2 main reporting source, USGS,
1.9 atomic bombs worth of energy released right there.
And then we have to keep in mind
all of the other earthquakes going off right there.
Something big is happening right there.
We're going to have to wait and see what develops,
but that is quite a swarm.
We must all agree.
Comparing earthquake data from different reporting agencies,
USGS 6.2, default depth 10 kilometers.
The Europeans is 6.2, 15 kilometers of depth.
We have Turkey coming in at 6.0, default depth there as well.
And then we have Aristotle University
coming in at 5.77, 14 kilometers of depth.
Not worked with them before,
the Germans coming in at 6.24, default depth.
And here we have Athens Seismological Laboratory coming in at 6.1.
Everyone's chiming in on this one.
We have a depth of 12 kilometers there.
We have National Observatory of Athens coming in at 6.0,
35 kilometers of depth.
We have the Seismological Survey of Siberia coming in at a 5.9 here,
default depth.
We have the Italians coming in at 6.2, 8.6 kilometers of depth.
We have the French coming in at 5.54, default depth.
We have the Incorporated Research Institute
for Seismology coming in at 6.2, default depth.
We have the Australians coming in at 6.23, default depth.
And we have the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority coming
in at 6.2, at 6.9 kilometers of depth.
We're going to round that off with other sources I've not seen before.
Kanda EE Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute of Istanbul,
6.1, 15 kilometers of depth.
And finally, Norway came in at 6.2, 10 kilometers of depth.
I've never seen so many agencies come in on a quake before.
And this isn't one quake.
This is a huge swarm, as we just saw.
All right,
so we do have a large 6.2 magnitude earthquake here.
And it looks like there's at least five other,
well, four other large earthquakes in the area.
Although it looks like there's quite
a swarm happening in the direct area as well.
See that better on earthquakesandvolcanoes.com.
So in summary, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake at,
well, a depth of around 10 kilometers.
We did see some 12s and 8s and 15s in there.
The default depth is 10 kilometers.
This was on a forming plate boundary.
You can see that the plate boundary in red ends here
and it's going to push through eventually
and connect to this line here.
It's probably a lot of what we're seeing right here.
I don't see any volcanoes in the area,
although there could be a seamount,
an underwater volcano right there. Yet to be
determined but that is quite a swarm we have seen today.
Look at that swarm one last time.
Not only is the entire Aegean Sea active,
that swarm is more than impressive.
If we zoom in just a bit more,
we can see how many earthquakes have occurred there.
Looks like it might be a subduction zone of some sort right here.
We'll do a little bit more research on this.
You can see the plate boundary is really south of here,
but it still hasn't formed. It's in black here.
And we'll...
I am guessing this is some sort of subduction zone based
on the geography and how it looks here.
Here is Istanbul, and here's the channel that goes into the Black Sea.
That said, God bless each and every one of you guys.
Be careful out there.
Expect more large earthquakes after
our geomagnetic storm over the last couple of days.
