George Washington - First President of the United States Documentary

George Washington, America's first president, in a documentary from Valley Forge and Yorktown to the Constitutional Convention and Mount Vernon.

In 1775 George Washington, a Virginian born in 1732, took command of the Continental Army and led it through the crossing of the Delaware, the winter at Valley Forge and the victory at Yorktown in 1781. From there the documentary turns to his role as president of the 1787 Constitutional Convention, his two terms as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797 and his Farewell Address of 1796. Life at Mount Vernon and his marriage to Martha get their share of attention, as does the clause in his will freeing the enslaved people he owned outright after Martha's death. He died in December 1799.
