How much of a real high-speed train can you recreate in miniature using the original blueprints?
In this video, we take a look at how Korea Brass makes its 1/87 scale model of the KTX Sancheon, one of South Korea’s high-speed trains. Using the original design drawings, Korea Brass recreated the train’s streamlined body and windows, right down to the seating layout inside the passenger cars.
There’s even a little of the real KTX Sancheon in this miniature. Korea Brass melted down material from a component in the train’s power conversion system and used it to make the model.
One Korea Brass model later traded for more than twice its original price. It was a miniature of Big Boy, the American steam locomotive. In a 2021 interview, the head of Korea Brass said the limited-edition model had originally sold for around 4.8 million Korean won in the early 2000s. By the time of the interview, collectors were paying 10 million won or more for it.
