This Remembrance Day,
Islanders have the opportunity to reflect on Summerside's
contributions to military efforts through
an exhibit at the Eptech Art and Culture Center.
It's called Remembering Summerside.
One 93-year-old veteran says he was amazed by the display
and it's important to continue to share this part of history.
I remember very clearly seeing veterans
from the Second World War coming back injured,
Missing an arm, missing a leg.
Okay, had to be helped off the train.
The center puts on the Remembrance Day exhibit every fall
and partners with the PEI Regiment Museum to pick a new theme.
Some of the artifacts on display this year include uniforms,
badges, and souvenir booklets,
as well as information on the former CFB Summerside.
The center's site manager says the goal is for people
to see the sacrifices that have been made.
I think we've been really lucky in Canada that our military has
primarily been used to bring peace to, it seems really strange to say,
like fighting for peace, but our military forces seem
to most often be used for that sort of thing.
And I think...
I think that's really valuable.
Part of the exhibit also looks
at women's contributions in naval service,
which was a welcome surprise for one veteran.
When I came in and I was working with the infantry,
I was one female of 350.
I'm so proud that the women are stepping up and stepping into
Thank you.
Roles that they've never had the opportunity to before.
It's wonderful.
And to see the success and to know that they're supported,
not just as women, but as military force in itself.
I love the total concept.
Windsor says she is proud of every service member
that has joined the Canadian military
and appreciates that people continue to honour veterans.
Remembering Summerside is on display until around Christmas.
