That's like a whole claw in there.
I traveled to Boston to try seven
of the most famous lobster rolls in the city. From local
favorites to tourist traps, I'm going to try them all
and then rank them at the end of the video and
figure out which Boston lobster roll is my favorite.
After a lot of research, these are
the seven restaurants that I came up with.
So let's go ahead and get started and head to the
first lobster roll spot. First spot was about
a mile away from where I was staying, all the way
over in Seaport. I had to cross the bridge,
walk a while, and finally got to Yankee Lobster.
Now the reviews on the Yankee Lobster were pretty strong.
A lot of people said they had one of the
best lobster rolls in all the city,
so let's see if it lives up to the hype. The inside was really
neat, there was plenty of seating outside as well,
and I paid $40.99 for the lobster roll.
Okay, so it's super noisy where I am,
but it was even noisier over by the restaurant.
You're going to hear all types of stuff going over top of me,
buses and stuff like that around.
But this is actually a pretty cool part right here
in the middle of Seaport in Boston.
All right, so let's go ahead and check out this lobster roll.
I mean, that's a pretty complete platter right there.
I'm liking that.
See if we can get this thing out.
I mean, that's pretty nice.
What I notice is the sides aren't butter
and toasted as some of the other ones.
It almost has like a brioche bun look to the side of this side of it.
The fries are delicious, though.
Lots of claw meat. Claw is tender.
It's got a little more flavor to the mayonnaise and
actually a little more mayonnaise too.
Something I've noticed on here is this one actually has
lettuce.
I like the addition
of the lettuce.
I like that there's
a little bit more
mayonnaise on it.
And I also like the fact that there's a little bit more, I don't know,
flavor to the bun without it having to have a bunch of butter on it.
I like how thick and
I'm glad I started off with this one today.
My second spot is going to be row 34.
This is also in Seaport, and walking there I realized
pretty quickly when I got to the restaurant
that this was more of an upscale restaurant
than like a lobster shack.
And reading the reviews, people had good stuff to say about
the lobster rolls, but one of the reviews
that really stuck out to me was the fact that this
thing cost $50, and at that price they
were not impressed at all with the lobster roll.
But let's go ahead and see what it actually tastes like.
Found our next spot here.
This is Row 34 Creamy Lobster Roll.
Now, this has a lot more mayonnaise on it than the other ones.
And the chunks of lobster meat seem a little bit smaller, too.
Okay, I do like the flavor, though.
This one
is pretty unique.
It's got a lot more than just, like, the normal mayonnaise base.
The bread is toasted nicely.
Chips are toasted. Chips are perfect.
I'm loving this roll.
I love the pickles, the onions, everything chopped up in it.
I think there's some creme fraiche.
I'm surprised I'm saying this.
It's pretty darn good.
I really like these chips a lot too. Spot three
was one that I was probably the most curious about
because it's the one that everyone says is just a tourist trap
and that's the Barking Crab. It is
in a really cool location
and looking over the reviews none of them make it seem like it's a
tourist trap at least about the lobster rolls. It does get 4.1 stars
which is kind of the lowest
out of all of them but all the reviews I read really said
the lobster roll was good. The
The Barking Crab's lobster roll was $42,
which puts it just above the Yankee lobster roll.
I will admit the inside actually was pretty cool looking.
It looked like a good place just to hang
out and sit on the water,
but I got my food and headed to a park because it was so noisy in here
I wouldn't have been able to record.
Let's go and check this out. Nice pieces of crab or nice
pieces of lobster in there. Let's get the whole bun out first.
Not a sloppy mess. Feels really
light. Not gonna lie to you.
Not much toast on either side.
Lobster
is a little bit chewy
and it's literally just topped with it.
I'd say this is the least amount
of lobster meat so far.
It does have lettuce on it which is nice
but overall I think this was more of a tourist
trap than a good spot for lobster.
Lobster roll number four is back in the main part of
downtown Boston at the North End
and it's going to be a local favorite called the Boston
Sail Loft. Now there was a line here all the time
and I actually was able to get it to go
and it still took a half hour
but looking at the Google reviews everyone says it's worth the wait.
Review after review says they have
the best lobster rolls in the city so I'm curious to
to see if it actually lives up to the hype.
Let's see what we got.
Okay, coleslaw and big,
thick-cut fries.
Those fries are delicious.
And here's that lobster roll.
That's like a whole claw in there.
Okay, this one definitely has more seasoning than the last.
There's a little bit of lemon, tarragon.
Lobster is fresh.
What I don't like, though, is it's split really sloppily.
Like, I know they're busy and in a rush.
I don't know.
I'm going to take another bite.
I'll be honest, my first bite, you have the lobster flavor,
a little bit of lemon, a little bit of tarragon,
but the bun?
The bun on this one is absolutely flavorless.
There's no butter.
There's no sweetness to it.
It's really gummy.
I mean, look, it's not bad,
but you can see the bun's just kind of charred.
It doesn't have that brown, like buttery brownness on it.
It's fine, but I'm glad I didn't wait an hour
and a half to get this at the restaurant.
I think I would have been pretty disappointed.
Lobster roll spot number five is going to be Paulie's.
And Paulie's is well known for one of
the biggest lobster rolls in the city.
The huge lobster roll is called the Lobstertution and I
knew I had to try it but I wish honestly
that I would have tried their regular lobster roll as
well. The Lobstertution cost me $120
but their regular lobster roll is only $37. All right let's
go ahead and get these out.
It came with a whole basket of fries.
Oh they're good.
It's not just one container of lobster rolls.
Thank you for watching.
Literally, it's four lobster rolls.
So, I'm going to open one up and give the other one to Gary.
Here we go.
Check this out.
It's on a different bun than you normally would get
with a lobster roll,
but there's a ton of lobster meat on here.
It's good claw meat.
It's really nice.
Not too drenched in mayo.
Lobster meat is super fresh,
but you're definitely getting a lot of fall.
It looks like some knuckle meat.
I have to admit, that's probably some of the best.
Cooked lobster on a lobster roll I've never had
and the freshest tasting as well.
I kind of wish I would have got the other normal lobster roll though
because then it would have been the true like lobster roll bun.
For lobster roll number six I'm changing it up a little bit
and instead of going to a restaurant
I'm going to the Boston Public Market to check out
a seafood market that supposedly has a really
good lobster roll. Now it was tucked all the way
in the back of the market but once I made it all
the way back there I liked what I saw.
As soon as I walked up I saw someone shucking oysters
and they had a whole case of different seafood and sushi as well.
I hope this means this lobster roll
from Red's Best is going to be really fresh.
But based on this one-star Google review,
supposedly, it's a little bit overpriced.
But at $38, it's actually
the cheapest lobster roll that I've tried so far.
All right, let's go ahead and try this other one.
Lobster roll.
Oh, my.
Take a look at that one.
Another nice thing about this one,
it's got the true toasted sides on the bun.
Tons of lobster meat.
A lot more flavorful than the other one.
Oh, absolutely.
Wow.
Creams.
I think this actually has lobster tail in it.
It's not just claw.
Always was all claw.
You're welcome.
Can't tell if that's claw.
I'm pretty sure that's lobster tail.
Look at that.
These are still tons in the
Nice chunk one.
And the seventh and final stop of this trip
is going to be James Hook Lobster Company.
Now this place is over 100 years old
and it's in a really cool spot in Boston.
Looking over the reviews,
if you want a traditional lobster roll, this is the place to go.
And it is also the least expensive lobster roll
of this whole trip at $35.
Now one of the things I really liked about
this place is as soon as I walked in,
you could see where your lobsters were coming from.
I even saw a guy take lobsters out to bring
to the back to steam them up for people that
were waiting in line and check out how big
this one lobster is in the tank. That is absolutely
huge. I wish I had more time because I definitely
would have tried some of these Jonah crabs fresh
from the water and also tried all the different sizes of lobsters
and some of the fresh seafood
that they had in their display.
I gotta admit everything looks so delicious. Let's go ahead
and check out what we got. Lobster roll
and this time I got some clam chowder as well.
That looks pretty good.
That's really good. Creamy.
The potatoes aren't too big. Lots of
little bits of clam. That's really tasty.
But we came here for the lobster roll. Let's try that
now. So the lobster roll,
this one's not as packed as the one from Red's Best. Looks like
a good amount
of claw, some
knuckle meat too.
Buns toasted
nicely. Classic
lobster roll. I
wish the roll itself had a little more butter. That being said.
It is a good lobster roll.
And that marks the end of my lobster roll tour in Boston.
Now if I forgot a spot, let me know in the comments
because I'll go back there and try it,
but for the ones that I tried today,
here's my ranking from worst to best.
If you've had any of these lobster rolls before,
let me know in the comments if I got something
wrong or if you totally agree
or disagree with my ranking of Boston lobster rolls.
