Gary Payton II: Why He's the Most Underrated Warriors Player?
Nov 5, 2026
Gary Payton II is the most undervalued
Golden State Warriors player? Here's why.
2022 NBA championship winner with the Golden State Warriors,
Gary Payton II, has an extraordinary reputation.
Join us in today's video as we show you why Gary Payton
the second is the most undervalued
Golden State player. Stay tuned because a lot of fun
and exciting content is already on its way.
Basketball runs in his jeans.
Gary Payton didn't have those moves all by himself.
Oh, we're not saying that he isn't someone
who does hard work at all, but we're trying to say
here that Gary has made himself a name in the NBA because guys,
basketball runs in his jeans.
Of course, he was born to the former NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton.
What more can you expect from him?
As his father had a huge name in the NBA,
he made sure that he followed in his footsteps.
From the very beginning,
Gary was a basketball player while still in high school.
His love for sports didn't remain confined to basketball,
but he was also a good swimmer.
While enrolled in college, Gary played two seasons
of college ball at Salt Lake Community College in Utah.
During that time, he could score some good points,
and as the season proceeded, his points improved.
Payton was voted to the Pac-12 first team as a junior
and senior while playing college
basketball for the Oregon State Beavers.
He also won Pac-12 defense player of the year honors.
His father has been given the nickname
The Glove since the days he played basketball.
Due to this, Gary Payton II is nicknamed The Mitten.
Sounds ironically correct, right?
No matter how he has performed in the past and how many points he made,
right now, his vital role in the Golden State Warriors.
Remember how Peyton made a comeback in the finals?
Even though he was injured, he helped them to win.
That's how important he is.
It's his job, after all.
Okay, so we might not get to see him more than often nowadays
because of his injury.
However, his fans do know that he is still a huge impact on the team.
Although he's not playing yet,
he assures that his team is outperforming.
Now, we've noticed one thing.
The Golden State Warriors aren't performing somehow well without Gary.
Remember when Stephen Curry was asked a question earlier in the season
after the Warriors defeated the Sacramento Kings 119-107?
But he answered as if he was pleased to hear it.
He questioned whether Gary Payton II's
outstanding performance in the victory
validated the benefit of the squad filling
its final and 15th roster place.
After the question was finished, he confidently replied,
1,000%.
The need for better defense management increased
when the team gave up four of its players,
including veteran guards Avery Bradley and Peyton,
who both specialize in defense. And guys,
this might sound crazy, but these are the players
that were really important for the Warriors'
victory in the long run. Additionally,
Curry was pleading with the Warriors management to fill the
place with defensive players.
Because let's be honest, not every player can fit in that location,
and Bradley and Peyton were among those players
that would fit in the position without any hassle.
So management initiated the season without filling
the vacancy during training camp.
Honestly, they were not ready to sign
a 15th player to the team at any cost.
We guess they just wanted to pay one less wage, maybe.
The Warriors coaching staff gritted their teeth
and crossed their fingers when Bradley signed
with the Lakers, hoping that Peyton would remain out
of the team and that management
would also let this matter go. But did that actually happen, eh?
Peyton never disappointed his team, and this time,
he's also there to jump into the team at any time.
And the Warriors were shocked as he continued
to be available during some important matches.
Peyton's performance has helped him maintain his reputation.
How ironic, right? Having such
a high performance record throughout the season
validates the team's decision to keep him.
Well, Gary played 17 minutes off the bench,
making 10 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal,
and generally playing excellent defense.
We might rarely see a professional
and successful basketball champion appreciating another
basketball player. However,
Curry makes sure to appreciate Payton's contribution to the on-ball
defense, and he always tries to appreciate
his offense instincts and movement.
Curry stated that Gary provides the team
an advantage defensively, and he then made two
massive three-pointers, which are just amazing.
Further, while talking to the press, Curry said
that he wants Gary to remain competitive
and focused as he already can do so.
Gary did a lot of homework to get into NBA.
Only the hard-working and luckiest of the
players can get to the NBA.
You can't just go up to the academy and get selected there.
You have to go through a lot before you get something huge.
An assistant coach at West Wind Preparatory Academy in Phoenix,
Adam DeSoto's job was to
prepare players for the next level.
In September 2011, he revealed a shocking confession that no
one would have ever thought of in this blog post.
He published that it is unusual that Gary was not
named an all-league defensive player throughout his college career,
and when he talked to the
college's sports management, they were hesitant to admit that as well.
Adam further explains while adding about Gary that how this kid
who's a perfect defense player out of the box
is not appreciated is something really disturbing.
And to this date, he remembers how he convinced teachers
to allow him to play at a professional level.
He refers to the situation as one challenging task of his life.
We all might think of Gary Payton
as an overhyped basketball player in his college days because
after all, he was the son of a hall of famer.
But guys, sadly, there wasn't anything like that.
Gary wasn't someone whom people would take seriously.
He was 19 years old when he got into
Salt Lake Community College and 23
when he went undrafted out of Oregon State. Finally, at the
age of 29, he got recognition with a one-year guaranteed contract
with the Golden State Warriors.
Till recently, Gary had been on the fringes
and played in the G League during the Summer League.
However, he never remained with one NBA team
and tried to play twice in the 10 days throughout the
Summer League, from training camp to Christmas camp.
Last Christmas, Gary started in the marquee
game when Devin Booker actually pushed him out
of the play. Seeing all this,
he turned up to the rim to make a powerful comeback
and made the play much more impressive.
He literally makes a game
a thousand times more impressive just by being in it.
And when this 6'3'' guy gave the victory to his team,
Andy Lee, co-host of Light Years,
a long-running Warriors podcast,
changed his Twitter display name to Gary Payton's
second Stan account.
All in all, we believe it's just an unforgettable season for Gary
as well as for us. While talking to the press,
he revealed that it's been an incredible season
and it's amazing on this team.
It was just an unforgettable season before
the team claim left for Memphis.
Without any doubt, the Warriors
are a unique team of basketball players,
and if Peyton II can improve them, which he most certainly can,
that makes him an essential player in everything going on.
Making a name for himself.
Peyton had witnessed the audience at Chase Center applaud him
and heard them chant his name.
He has harassed rival stars like Chris Paul and Nicola Giacchi,
won a jump fall against a 6'11
Jonas Valanciunas dunked so hard that he received a headbutt
and acquired a new name, The Mitten.
The Thief and GP2 are also some names fans might often call Gary.
Don't even consider
calling him The Mitten, as to family he's known as Tiny Gary.
He is difficult to pin down,
so everything he does on the floor needs to be pretty exceptional.
Golden State assistant coach
Ron Adams stated that Andy had found a specialty that suits him
and is very beneficial to a team.
Peyton is happy that he made a name for himself soon after turning 30.
There is no specific age
at which business people stop considering you as a prospect,
but it does happen that way.
He claimed that the NBA undoubtedly seeks younger men to run the game
and develop it into their future.
He also added that if you think about him, he didn't begin
playing basketball until his final year of high school.
As a player, he doesn't have
that much wear and tear.
He thinks of himself as a good athlete having good quick moves.
Despite being the son of the glove,
a great NBA player who faced up against Jordan and others
during his career, Gary Payton II has admitted
that he is a late bloomer. This is likely what
prevented more people from taking a chance at him.
But right now, with the Warriors,
he has the opportunity to duplicate what
his father achieved toward the end of his career
by helping the Miami Heat win the championship.
So what do you think of Gary Payton II as a player?
Do you think he still has to go a long
way to become his father's reflection?

That's all for today, see you in the next one.
Till then, stay safe and bye bye!
