Susana Ragel Painter Spain 1981

NAME: Susana
SURNAME: Ragel
PLACE OF BIRTH: Madrid
DATE OF BIRTH: 1981
PROFESSION: Artist
We met this week's new recruit, Susana Ragel, at the beginning of last year through her first exhibition in Murcia: she was presenting the exhibition “Viajar en el sitio” at El Punto Rojo, sister gallery of the Leucade Gallery, with the title and content ideal for that moment; she invited us to delve into our desires, almost the only place where we had been able to take refuge in the previous months. To develop that pictorial project, she asked all those interested to send her photos of themselves and tell her where they would really like to be at the beginning of confinement. She has a degree in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid. She has also presented her solo exhibitions at the Municipal Arts Centre in Alcorcón, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Castilla-La Mancha in Hellín, the exhibition halls of the Caja de Ávila, Espacio 36 in Zamora, the Ceferino Navarro Gallery in Granada, the Besada Gallery in Pontevedra, the Red Nankim gallery in Oporto, Kafell (Zaragoza), Fine Art Commissions (London), the Lobby Art Gallery in Madrid and the UNED exhibition halls in Calatayud and Ejea de los Caballeros. In the British gallery, and on one occasion at Ceferino Navarro, she exhibited alongside Annika Llavero Talsi. Her collective exhibitions, meanwhile, have taken her to spaces such as the Galeria Dionís Benassár in Mallorca, the MEAM in Barcelona, the Iona House Gallery in Oxford, the Abend Gallery in Denver (Colorado), the Galeria Jordi Barnadas in Barcelona, the Casa de Velazquez, the Casa de la Moneda, the Fran Daurel Foundation or the Rafael Botí Foundation in Córdoba; we have also found her work in events such as the Affordable Art Fair, the Contemporary Art Fair in Seville and Gijón, We Art Fair, Almoneda or ART MADRID. Susana has also been awarded by the Albacete Painting Biennial, the Virgen de las Viñas Foundation in Tomelloso, the Foundation of the Arts and Artists of Barcelona, the Rafael Botí Foundation or the Spanish Association of Painters and Sculptors. This artist joins our list of artists because we wanted to give space to her introspective portraits and learn more about the connections that she can establish with the viewer without looking at them: her figures never clearly show their faces, and the public is the one who enters into the frozen moments in which they are immersed. Ragel is interested in moments halfway between action and its slowness and the capture of suspended time in her paintings: the possibility of oil painting to present itself to us almost as a frame.
Much of her production is related, thematically, to our options for escape in nature and solitude, and, formally, light plays a fundamental role in her work.
