Hello there, welcome back, this is just
a very quick update on the duck situation on my pond
I've had a pair of ducks here like every day
for months now. Now I put a duck nesting basket out
now the ducks haven't even looked at that as far as I could see
because I had a game cam on there
the ducks are swimming backwards
and forwards, never caught them once going into the duck basket
now the ducks have definitely nested somewhere
and it'll be either around the side of the pond
possibly towards the top end
I don't know, I am going to have a look though
because I'm intrigued as to see where they actually built the nest.
They didn't use the basket, they've built a nest somewhere
and I haven't gone round there and had a look to see if there's
been any nests up to this point because I didn't want to disturb them
Normally mallards would have a hell of a lot more than four,
but four ducklings is all I can see at the moment on the pond.
So without further slaver from me
I'll give you a few clips of the ducks.
I'm
finding
the
nest,
but
I've
had
a
bit
of
good
news.
My daughter's just come home from school
and she tells me that my father was walking along next to the river
which is about 500 yards away, yesterday and he saw a female duck with
four young ones walking up the field towards my house and this pond.
So I didn't think they would travel that far with such young ducklings,
but obviously they do.
Now to get those four ducklings from the river
to the pond was quite an achievement because there's
crows, magpies, jays, foxes, badgers, oh stoats
weasels, buzzards, red kites, all sorts flying
around and walking around that'll kill them on the way
and they managed to get from the river
to the pond without any casualties as far as I can tell
It does concern me a little bit
though because at the weekend which was about three or four days ago
I saw two families of ducks on the river,
straight in front of the house.
They each had seven or eight ducklings,
and if one of those had seven or eight, it's now only got
four. So that might explain why it's brought them up
from the river to the pond, but it really
highlights the need for a floating island in here.
So I think that's a project I'll have to do at
some point. It's too late for this year now,
but certainly for next year I need a floating island
So I'll make that happen.
Thanks very much for watching.
I'll see you next time.
