When you think of meteor showers, you think of small bits of space rock and debris. Often originating from comets or asteroids, the meteor showers we're used to seeing are made up of debris that's usually smaller than a grain of sand in size. As comets or asteroids orbit the sun, they heat up and release gases and dust, forming tails. This material spreads out along the comet or asteroid's orbit. creating a stream of meteoroids. When Earth passes through a stream of meteoroids, these particles enter our atmosphere at high speeds, often tens of thousands of miles per hour. The intense friction between the meteoroid and the atmosphere causes it to heat up and vaporize, creating a bright streak of light we call a meteor. Well, history tells us this is not always the case. An event called the Qingyang event, and sometimes referred to as the Qingyang event, was an entirely different ballgame. The Qingyang event of 1490 is one of the only recorded instances of a meteor shower causing multiple deaths. Though the history is disputed, at least three sources Claim that more than 10,000 people were struck dead by meteors hurling from the sky to Earth in what is now Gansu, China. Obviously, these meteors were much larger in size than the meteors we're used to seeing burn up in Earth's atmosphere, something we often refer to as shooting stars. These meteors that hit Earth in 1490 were large stones and rocks, and many of them made it to the ground, supposedly killing over 10,000 people. No one seems able to pinpoint what comet or asteroid created this large rocky tail, and let's hope, folks, we never find out. God bless you and yours.
