Armenia's prime minister has said the country may look
to apply to join the EU by 2027 or
2028, framing the move as a choice between Brussels
and Russia's Eurasian bloc.
Next year can be realistic.
2028 can be realistic.
We started the process
which will bring us to the final decision to submit.
Application for full membership of the European Union.
For Pashinyan, EU membership is a strategic choice
to protect Armenia's democracy
after the 2018 revolution
that ousted pro-Russian politicians from power.
Following Russian threats of retaliation,
notably by cutting off Armenia's energy supply,
Pashinyan said his government aims to diversify its political
and economic relations.
Our goal is to level up, to develop our independence.
And that is legitimate goal.
Nobody could accuse Armenia
for aspiration to be more independent,
more sovereign, more integrated country.
He added the choice will ultimately be for the Armenian people to make.
