Texas Attorney General
and Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton has been mocked online
after saying at a campaign rally
that the United States recently celebrated its 200th anniversary.
He made the embarrassing error on Tuesday, October 27th,
while speaking in Corpus Christi ahead
of the November 3 midterm elections.
Paxton slipped when he welcomed President Donald Trump to the rally.
Paxton stated on July 4th,
We celebrated something pretty cool.
We celebrated the 200th anniversary of our country.
The U.S. declared independence in 1776,
with the bicentennial celebrated back in 1976.
This video brought attention to Paxton's trip
to England during July 4 celebrations.
James Tallarico fired back, pointing out,
It was actually our 250th anniversary.
Not that you would know you spent it with the British.
Tallarico's comment referenced Paxton's controversial trip
to London with Christian influencer Tracy Duhon.
Critics quickly piled on with history jokes.
Patriot takes suggested Paxton thought it was 1976.
Hemant Mehta sarcastically wrote,
I remember that day of our nation's birth in 1826.
One remark questioned, could they have nominated anyone stupider?
Another account pointed out it was the 250th Ken
and you spent the holiday in London with a woman who wasn't your wife.
As Paxton faces criticism ahead of the election, his wife,
Texas State Senator Angela Paxton, filed for divorce.
Despite their split, she still endorsed him, appearing in an ad.
