Carnaby Street derives its name from Karnaby House, which was built in 1683 to the east. The origin of the name is unknown. The street was probably laid out in 1685 or 1686. First appearing in the ratebooks in 1687, it was almost completely built up by 1690 with small houses.

For years Carnaby was the place to be if you were a creative in search of inspiration. Carnaby earned its credentials during the 1960s with vibrant clashes of colour, new cultures, exciting new music and a rebellious identity, there was nowhere else like it in London.

Property owners are big news in the UK following Wednesday's proposed Hammerson-Intu merger and while London-focused Shaftesbury is small compared to the mega-company the two giants are going to create, it also has plenty of news of its own.
