701 and a fire at a cat shelter
in Lombard has people looking for places to keep the kitties
today. Yeah, 30 cats were rescued.
Gabrielle Primas is on the scene and live with more. Hi, Gabby.
Hi, guys. I know such a sad story.
You don't want to hear about any animals being in danger,
but it sounds like this is somewhat of a good outcome.
Let's talk about it. This fire happened Sunday night at Cat Guardians.
This is an all-volunteer run,
non-profit shelter that serves the Lombard community,
and we have some video from earlier this morning, kind of the aftermath
of what's left this morning of the building that we'd like to show.
Really, a board-up company was at work as soon as we showed up,
making sure that those windows were covered.
They said most of the damage is to the main floor,
the top floor there as well, and it
looks like the fire marshal stopped by early
this morning to say it was okay for them to
start work.
According to Village of Lombard,
firefighters rescued at least 30 cats from the shelter.
Officials believe most of the animals are accounted for,
though the total number hasn't
been confirmed.
Just yet, the shelter sits right along busy St. Charles Road.
So the video that we've seen posted online shows flames
were visible from the street Sunday night
and fire crews had to block off traffic while battling the blaze.
Reports did indicate crews had the fire out by 10 p.m.
There's no word yet on what caused the fire,
but we will make sure to bring you updates as soon as we can.
I will say this morning, guys, as we're standing here,
There was a volunteer who actually ran past us, ran inside, even
though it might be dangerous, and just distraught over what happened.
She said that she just heard, saw a text that there was a fire last
night, didn't look on social media, didn't look at any news reports.
And so came straight here,
but she was really relieved to hear that all the cats are accounted
for at least for now.
So we're hoping to learn more information.
Also I'm checking cat guardians,
Facebook page or Instagram page and it looks like they
have no updates available just yet.
So we'll let you know.
Okay.
Yeah.
Keep us posted.
I'm sure a lot of our viewers would be eager
to step up and help if needed in a situation
like this.
Gabby, thank you so much.
