James Kaufman will news report today.
Comet 3I Atlas filmed during full lunar eclipse.
On September 7th, darkness fell across the Kalahari Desert
as Earth's shadow enveloped the full moon.
It was a total lunar eclipse
and the perfect time to photograph an interstellar comet.
We took advantage of the total lunar eclipse
to take a deep image of Comet 3I Atlas,
also known as C2025N1, under the dark skies of Nambi,
says amateur astronomers Michael Yeager and Joe Riemann.
Here is what they saw. The comet was green.
Our image shows a gas-rich coma.
Of two arc minutes for the first time, says Yeager,
it was clearly visible in both the blue and green filters.
The site is familiar to astronomers.
Comets in our own solar system often glow green,
although this comet is not from our solar system.
Their emerald hue comes from a diatomic carbon C2.
which fluoresces at 518 nanometers
when energized by sunlight.
Is that why 3I Atlas is green?
The jury is still out.
In August, spectroscopy by astronomers at Kitt Peak showed
that 3I Atlas was strongly depleted in C2.
Indeed, it was one
of the most carbon-chain poor comets ever observed.
C2 production turned on in September,
or the green glow might come from some other mixes of gas or dust,
mimicking a classic cometary color with unfamiliar chemistry.
I think that we are starting to see a tail on this comet,
and I will let
y'all be the judge of that going off to the 9 o'clock position.
God bless, folks.
It's inbound, and we'll be able to observe it.
For at least the next three weeks before it gets behind the sun.
