Shortly after 7.50 p.m.,
multiple shots rang out in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West.
Officers responded and located multiple gunshot victims.
Officers then assessed and secured the scene
for Birmingham Fire and Rescue to enter and
render aid to victims.
We can confirm that a total of nine victims
were wounded by gunfire, with at least one
being confirmed deceased, one critical, and seven in stable condition.
Multiple firearms were recovered from the scene by officers
and turned into our property room.
One person has been detained
and transported to the Birmingham Police Headquarters for questioning.
This is an active scene with developing information.
We will be sure to provide updates once those updates become available.
The fact of the matter is this was two senseless acts of violence.
Completely senseless acts of violence.
This is something that we not only just see here in Birmingham,
but we see it all over the nation.
And it's important that we as a community address
this issue, as a community.
I'm very grateful that more people weren't injured.
I'm very grateful that with all the spectators
and families and things of that nature,
this did occur after the game.
For the most part, it was off of the property.
But, of course, it was still in the area, in the vicinity,
where a lot of the vendors were, where it occurred on Greatmont Avenue.
So we're just very thankful that more individuals were not injured.
