We took a day off yesterday.
We needed a break after the workshop but I want to show you where
we're at and what's going on because we did
not finish the wall during the Accent Wall workshop.
We had some miscalculations but we did go ahead
and get the rest of the form work set up. So you
can see this form goes all the way up.
We've got the rounded corner in. We have all the conduit.
Same thing over there and then you can
also see how we did the the tinted stuff right at the front
and then the non-tinted at the back.
That's how we're saving on tint because we also miscalculated
that we don't want to go have to buy anymore.
Hopefully we got to finish it this week because
Ashley's leaving soon so we're gonna be working
on this the rest of the week trying to get this
wall finished and then when she gets
back we're gonna take the forms off.
Okay we
got the
frame
work up
it was
a pain
in the
butt.
But it's up and Jonathan's starting to make the first mix of black.
We're going to make a shelf
here on the front facing of everything
and then we'll switch to the untinted if we have time.
We'll see how far this goes with only me and Jonathan and Ada and Jax.
Not very many people
And this right here looks like we planned it.
But that was a happy accident.
Oh my goodness guys,
it is so fiddly up there between all of the conduits and the fact that
we're just having to reach a little further down into it
and the bar joist that's right
in the way and the height of the scaffolding.
We can't really go down anymore with the double,
the single's not tall enough.
We're moving real slow, real slow.
But what we have done is we've done all...
The black we're going to do for now,
we've got ourselves a nice little sort of shelf around the
outside. So now we're going to make some big batches of the untinted
and we're going to go
back to the 61 for that because we don't really need,
we don't need to add more cement. There's
no reason to. So we're going to use more sand, less cement.
Somebody's in my way though. Cloud.
Wow.
This crystal was given to me by my friends Mike and Catherine up
in Whitesage and so I'm finding the center of this wall
and it's going to be placed inside the wall just as a special memory.
So thank you to Mike and Catherine.
For the
day, guys,
it is
so hard
to film
up here
while
we're
trying
to work.
There's
so many
things
to work
around
so I'm
just
going to
flip you
around
and show
you what
we got
finished.
We are really nearing the top of the bond beam.
Before we get...
Too much higher. We're gonna put a nut, a washer,
and another nut on these all thread and that will
just help this material have something else to lock against.
We have rebar, conduit, rebar,
so much conduit, more rebar, more conduit, and more rebar.
But we've gotten so far
Like, we're really close to getting up to that bond beam.
So I think the plan is for Thursday to have a few people over.
We're not.
The kids will be at work and doing school stuff.
So if we can have a few people here, I think we might be able
to make it to the top if we work really hard on Thursday.
Fingers crossed we can get some people out here
and hopefully wrap this project up.
Because I leave on Saturday, so there's not a lot of time left.
Good progress today and hopefully more progress later in the week.
A song I can remember.
On a rainy day in September
Your son.
Streaming in my life.
Thanks forever.
I can hear you through the thunder.
Not my bed.

It's been a crazy morning here.
We have some friends coming over
to try to help us finish this lava creek wall.
We still have about four feet worth of material left.
And because it's going back over the shelf,
the concrete bond beam shelf, to the adobe,
it's even more material than it has been so far.
So anyway, Tiffany and Andrew and Tom are here,
and we've cleaned up the top.
We've cleaned up the shelf
so that the LavaCrete will stick to the concrete bond beam better.
And we're cleaning up a few things.
We're adding some nuts and washers to those all threads
that are sticking out from the bond beam pour
just to have something else for that wall to lock into.
And we're just going to be making LavaCrete.
all
day
long.
Good
to
have
short
friends.
I
don't
hear
it.
Nice.
So
the
form
work
is up
and
in
place
so it's just a matter of getting enough LavaCrete over there tamped.
It is about 3 30 so we
don't have a whole lot of time to get this done
but hopefully we can move fast enough.
Adelaide's here, Jett's here, Ada will be here in just a minute.
Jax is watching the dogs so
Yeah we're
just gonna
keep going
and see what we
can get done.
We did the best
we could but
it is too dark. We're so close to being finished
but just a little bit more to do and uh yeah
maybe tomorrow.
Well this lava
crete accent
wall build has
definitely not
gone according
to plan.
We miscalculated the sizing and the volume and the tint.
Sorry, it's windy, but so many different things.
We only got halfway done during our workshop,
which has never happened to us before.
And we're still working on it,
even though we've had a couple of work days after.
We are getting close, though.
I think we have one more day in us.
And I hope it can be today because Ashley is leaving
for her Lime Over Adobe exterior plaster workshop tomorrow.
And we really want to get this done so we can move all the lava crete
and get back to adobe's over in the work area
Yeah, I mean we've got
Yeah, it's a decent amount, but I think we
can probably get it done this afternoon
I would
really
like
to get
it done
this
afternoon.
It would
make me
very
happy.
It's like
it's past
what you
want it
to be
No, it's fine
I can still leave a lot of room up here
We
back
to
black.
Okay
ada
and
I
just
finished
Laying all of the lava crete up here
So this wall is basically done,
other than taking the forms off in about a week.
And sealing it, oiling it.
Well that's not going to happen until we oil
the floor and that's not going to happen.
Who knows, it may not even need it.
It may not. It may be so black
that we don't need it, but we don't know.
Anyway, guys, we're exhausted. This took way longer than we thought,
way more material than we thought, but it's going to be worth it.
It's going to be really cool and we had just enough pigment.
Well, it's
currently
almost 7
p.m. on
Saturday,
and I'm
supposed
to leave
at 3.30.
So the flight has been canceled, delayed,
until 9 p.m. tonight, which means I won't
be getting to Dallas until 1
a.m. Sunday,
and then from Dallas to San Antonio.
Won't be leaving until after 7 and getting
into San Antonio around 8.30 a.m. tomorrow.
And guess what time the workshop starts? 9 o'clock.
So, that's not counting the 45-minute drive in the morning,
picking up a rental car, and all the things that come with that.
So, this has been super fun.
It's been a while since I've done one.
So, yeah. Cheers.
I'm gonna come over here, 40% overlap,
straight up, straight down.
Now I'm pretty much out of mud.
I'm gonna get up, come over here, and get some water.
Okay, you notice I'm
not playing with it.
It's that simple.
You're gonna scratch it diagonally in both directions,
from the bottom to the top.
You can see
it starts
to make cups.
Good morning.
Headed to day two of the Texas Cup
Lime Over Adobe Workshop.
Yesterday, I missed all the important stuff
because of my stupid flight being delayed so long.
I missed all about the mixes.
I missed a bunch of stuff that was really important.
And that really sucks because that was the whole reason I was coming,
is to, like, know the mix and know why it's certain ratios.
ask all my questions. So I'm really bummed
that I missed all that. Hopefully I can grab
somebody's notes but it's still
not the same like I would have had so many questions. But
anyway we're on to day two and looking forward to it.
There's a lot of cool people there
and I don't know what we're planning on doing today other than
plastering but I don't know. Might be something cool.
Okay,
so as soon
as you
Darby, the
Darby's
going
to do
something
called
storyboarding,
which is where all the rough spots are pretty much what you want,
but then all these smooth
spots are low.
Some
days
they
seem
to
drag,
and
all
they
do
is
pull
you
down.
There's something up.
Why don't we fall and lose it all before we lose ourselves?
Into the water, into the blue, into the great unknown.
Into the ocean, every emotion soon may we all dissolve.
I know the shore
and I know the waves are never that long apart.
There's a chance that we're gonna make it.
We'll have to throw our heart into the water.
Alright guys,
it is time
to remove
some forms.
Oh my goodness, I'm so excited.
I'm excited.
It's always like unwrapping a surprise.
We don't really know how it's going to turn out.
Don't know what it's going to look like.
Don't know how well the niches worked.
We don't know how well the tint worked.
We don't know how well the layers worked.
Because you had a really specific idea for layers.
yeah so time the scaffolding is already set up
so we'll just start at the top
and work our way down the sides are going
to be a little tricky because they
have to come off at the same time
and the metal is attached to the metal is going to be a problem
we're going to be really careful wear gloves let's get gloves yeah
are you going to help us
well we got what
to do sorry dude that's
what the top looks like
I was freaking out because I was like oh
no it's too light but then I remembered.
That's not the tinted part. Yeah.
The tinted is right up against the edge.
Okay I'm gonna try to get stuff on my side.
Yeah this whole situation is gonna be fascinating to
see when we take it off.
I don't want you to be upset if it looks a little...
It's gonna be wonky
here. Yeah. For sure.
You gotta move the scaffolding.
It's the first piece. Okay.
I like the, I like the layer. You can see it.
See all the different layers. Yeah. Yeah.
Okay. Okay. Okay.
See
at
the
bottom.
Lean like this out?
Probably.
Okay. You
see all
the salt
dust?
Yeah.
That's from cutting the form.
That is so cool!
Ready? This has two screws that are sticking out the back.
Can you go really cool with this?
I do like, like when you're looking at it from different angles,
you can definitely see the red rock and I like it.
it is really clean and nice
and tight like they did a really good job making sure that's
really cool from back here making sure
that front is really tight it looks so good
Look at our workshop people. They did so good.
Good!
Hey guys, just a quick reminder.
Our last workshop of the year is coming up very soon
and it's almost full.
Yes, it's November 13th, 14th, and 15th where we will be laying
hyper adobe bags and cladding it with lava crete.
So here's a good example.
It's basically going to be this project and if you look behind it.
There's hyperdovey behind it, so six layers of hyperdovey,
but it's going to be way bigger than this wall.
Yes, this is going to be a retaining wall to hold
the soil that the Lava Crete building is up on.
So when we design this wall, you see those two pipes?
There's going to be a walkway that goes through,
and then there's going to be...
The same wall that goes all the way around the Lava Crete building.
So it's a pretty big-sized project.
We're going to need lots of hands here,
lots of hyper-adobe to lay, lots of Lava Crete,
lots of form work to do for Lava Crete, which would be good.
Peter Dawson will be here.
Paul Schwamm will be here.
So if you have any questions about Lava Crete,
they would be great to answer all your questions.
Absolutely.
You can come on site.
Breakfast and lunch are provided.
It's going to be a great long weekend.
And who knows, maybe if we get done early, we can make some adobes.
Maybe.
Maybe.
We'll see.
Anyway, spots are almost gone.
You should sign up.
TinyShinyHome.com slash events.
What was it?
What was the website?
TinyShinyHome.com slash events.
Okay.
I was very confused.
Are you going to help with the lava creek wall?
The hyperdoby lava creek wall?
He's like, nope.
I'm just going to sit on the shoulder.
It smells like a goat barn.
Hmm.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Pull my
side out
a little.
Yeah, that looks massive doesn't it?
This would be such a cool fireplace. I know.
I know.
Next workshop. Imagine with the orange fire and the black wall.
It would be a very cool fire.
Thank you so much.
The bottom
one comes out
different.
Into the curve.
Can't really see
the curve yet. Nope.
Does it look enormous if I'm standing here?
Like two and a half, two and a half feet. All right well
Sides. Sides. We can take off the top parts first.
So let's do that. Remember how this
was. We're going to need
to get the scaffolding back.
Where's that crowbar?
So when we take it
out it's probably going to have to go this way.
So if I can get this two by four undone,
I can take the top part of this off.
There's a strap right behind it.
This is stapled into the
Are you holding something?
Oh, I don't got it. It's heavier than it looks.
Thank you.
I forgot about the tape.
Look
at it.
Look
at it.
That is really sweet.
I believe it.
I'm really glad we went to the trouble again.
Are you okay with the metal?
Our friends Andrew and Tiffany put these together for us
so it'll be interesting to see if we can
take it apart. I mean it's all look at it's all numbered.
Well made. They they planned out exactly
how to take it apart. Yeah they were telling me
and I was like I'm not following what you're saying.
That's why they numbered it. I know.
These are made out of foam it means we can just cut them out and
pull them out. We wanted these to be really sharp
because they're always going to be visible. So
If you build them out of wood, the problem is is they absorb water
and then they swell and then they get hard to get out.
So this is why Andrew and Tiffany spent
so much time sort of designing these to come apart.
So we'll see how it goes. I should have had them come back.
I know I thought about it.
Oh no.
Well,
that's
pretty
cool.
Should
we
tape
off
those
things
up
there?
Yeah.
Bye.
Have so much fun.
Have so much fun.
It'll be fine.
We'll be good.
Okay, everything's fine.
Hello there.
Jonathan and some of the kids have left to go to Tennessee.
And I'm left with the whole mess of the living room.
But most importantly, trying to get these.
I just, after three hours, got that wood form out.
And I have one more to do.
That's foam, so it shouldn't take as long.
But I don't have a crazy sharp knife, so it's going to take a while.
Anyway.
Lots to do while Jonathan's gone for the next five days.
What am I going to do?
Thank you.
On the list of things to do is first clean up this living room
and get rid of stuff that's in here that we don't need.
Organize all the boards that we're going to be using
for formwork later on and just clean up the
tools. Then once all that living room is cleaned up,
I can take apart the scaffolding, take it to
the bedroom side and we're going to start laying adobe blocks
because I need to see progress.
We're going to do it. Ada's with me.
My friend Brittany's coming for a couple days. She'll be
here all day tomorrow with me hoping
to get some blocks up on the wall and then yeah.
Just do my best to get organized
and get this place cleaned up so it doesn't look so bad
and fix a few things on this wall, like that hole.
I'm not sure what happened.
It looked like it just didn't get a section tamped there
because it just all crumbled
out, but it's fixable.
So lots to do.
Gotta stop talking and just get things done, right?
Okay.
Cause I can't shake the way you sway in the evening light, yeah
How was that?
It was wonderful.
How are you?
Oh my god. Look at that.
I just took the form out.
Holy crap.
Isn't that fun?
Oh my god.
Can you see the middle one?
Okay.
Like this is the middle one.
So that one's the yellow one.
Yeah.
Okay.
Flirts and words in their bolo type.
Fear I lose my mouth
to keep me up.
from this day forward
Take my heart, it's yours to own
