A fresh salvo in the U.S.-Canada trade war
fired from right here in New Jersey.
Thank you. Here we go.
This American food importer suing the Trump administration
to end 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods
including these cheeses he imports destined for U.S. consumers.
We do about $80 million of sales of Canadian cheeses.
Tom Gellert of Gellert Global Group says
his company is covering the tariffs for now
and it could cost up to $40 million a year.
Walk me through what was the decision like to say,
OK, you know what, we're going to launch
a lawsuit against these tariffs.
50% is not sustainable and quite frankly we don't have time
to wait for things to settle on their own.
President Donald Trump imposed this round
of tariffs after Canada-U.S. trade talks broke
down in August. Canada is learning their lesson.
They took advantage of us for many, many years.
He used a Depression-era law that allows
the president to impose tariffs on a country that
is discriminating against the U.S.,
Canada's alleged defense retaliating against previous
rounds of U.S. tariffs. I think
the administration may have a tough time.
Identifying the reasons why these particular products
or these particular actions by Canada are discriminatory
such that the tariffs will offset that discrimination.
This is really one of my favourite cheeses that we get from Canada.
Gellert is worried about his Canadian suppliers,
including the makers of this goat cheese from Lindsay, Ontario.
And so I do feel some sort of sense of personal responsibility
to that community that we've encouraged them to build up
infrastructure to help support the business.
And now that's at risk.
If we stop buying, they start culling goats.
It's not something that can be brought back again.
This is also from Ontario.
Gellert hopes it doesn't get to that
and that the court case moves quickly.
