A stunning political declaration from Florida has turned
into a major embarrassment for Brazil's
Bolsonaro camp. Just days after losing Brazil's presidential election
and leaving the country,
Flávio Bolsonaro has declared himself Brazil's true president.
And instead of rallying support,
the statement has triggered widespread ridicule across social media.
So what exactly happened?
The 45-year-old senator,
who is the eldest son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro,
posted the declaration on social media on Wednesday,
just hours after arriving in Florida.
But the timing raised eyebrows.
Flavio had lost Sunday's presidential runoff
to left-wing incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva,
despite leading the first round of voting earlier this month.
And after his election defeat, he left Brazil,
traveling to the United States through Argentina and Ecuador.
Then came the controversial social media post.
Initially, Flávio described himself as Brazil's true president,
But following the backlash, he changed the wording
and referred to himself as the country's leader.
That, however, did little to stop the online jokes.
Brazilian pop star Anitta joined the mockery,
jokingly declaring herself free of cellulite.
Other social media users took the opportunity
to proclaim themselves the true president of Twitter
or even the winner of the next lottery.
But the criticism was not limited to social media.
Brazilian media outlets were particularly harsh.
Newspaper O Globo reportedly likened Flávio to a
lunatic asylum Napoleon,
while Folha de São Paulo described the declaration as pathetic.
Some publications also portrayed the statement
as an attempt to undermine the democratic process.
And, perhaps more damaging for Flávio,
even members of his own political camp began distancing
themselves from the declaration.
São Paulo governor Tarcísio de Freitas,
a former minister under Jair Bolsonaro and
a potential right-wing presidential contender, made his position clear.
He said the election result was sovereign
and reflected the will of the majority, which
must be respected.
He also described a possible presidential run in 2030 as a possibility.
Flávio's campaign coordinator, Rogério Marinho,
also said there was no evidence of electoral fraud.
Meanwhile, Brazil's electoral court chief,
Cássio Nunes Marques, issued a statement
defending the security of the voting process.
So, with political allies rejecting any
suggestion of electoral wrongdoing,
Flávio's declaration has raised another question.
Is this really about claiming presidential legitimacy?
Or is it an attempt to maintain political
influence despite an election defeat?
Political scientist Geraldo Monteiro believes
the move was not simply a mistake, but a calculated
attempt to retain influence over conservative supporters.
However, he questioned whether
Flávio could effectively lead Brazil's opposition
while remaining outside the country.
He also suggested the declaration could divide
the conservative camp between those showing
extreme loyalty and those unwilling
to support another confrontation with democratic institutions,
Meanwhile, the Bolsonaro family's political future
remains under scrutiny.
Flávio's father, Jair Bolsonaro, is
serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest
after being convicted over a plot
to stage a coup following his 2022 election defeat.
And on Thursday, Liberal Party leader Waldemar Costa Neto
visited the former president.
For Flávio, the immediate fallout is clear.
A statement apparently intended
to project political authority has instead triggered
ridicule, criticism from the media, and distance from important allies.
And the bigger question now is whether he can turn
this controversy into political influence,
or whether declaring himself Brazil's leader
from Florida will further weaken an already
divided right-wing opposition.
