Musician MC Jones introduces his gear setup for his debut record, \"Joy,\" and his live performances. He focuses on a minimalist approach, utilizing a Fender Telecaster and a Fender Blues Junior amp without the use of pedals, emphasizing a raw, reliable sound and a unique finger-style playing technique.
With the Bigsby, there was a thing, I thought it was going
to be like losing its tune all the time, but it doesn't do that.
I play with
my thumb,
kind of my
thumb and
my finger.
Hello, I'm MC Jones and I'm promoting my new record,
debut record, Joy, which is out now.
And yeah, I'm going to be showing you my equipment
and what I play on the road.
So yeah, this is a Fender Telecaster.
i've had this for a couple of years now
and i think it yeah it's a mexican it's a ventura series
um which is which is cool it's got the Bigsby um which i quite like
because it's like it's quite uh
i use it quite a bit in the live shows you know it's a end of tune
or something especially when
i was playing solo it was like a very good thing
to um yeah play at the end of the song you know
You know, you can just...
and just let everyone know that that's the thing
but yeah i love this guitar
it's great um uh great guy Steve Donington as well
um uh he's he sorts out my guitar so he's like
done a bit of work to it you know just sorted out
the action and things like that
yes we did change this pickup actually here um and we've changed it
but it's just to the regular stock pickup
But yes, he did sort it out. That was because it died.
basically so um but it's it's it's just been a great guitar and it's um
super reliable it was weirdly with the Bigsby there was a thing
i thought it was going to be like losing its tune all the time
but it doesn't do that it like stays in tune which is which is
handy for someone like me because i'm just like
I don't have to do that all the time you know
and it's just been a great guitar it's a it's a
it's been road worn you know so it's been traveling around
a lot got it around that little case there
the case is quite wrapped so it's like
you know i put it in the hold
and like these guitars can take a fair bit of whack you know
from travel and stuff but i love it it's um it's
my baby you know in terms of tuning i basically
always have it in standard like don't really use i've got a capo
which i use for one song
which is there but i really don't use i don't
like using capos very much just just purely like
i don't really write with them
so i just prefer to work it out in whatever standard is um
And yeah, I've always kind of gone for a guitar to amp combination,
you know, I don't have
a, I don't have any pedals at the minute,
you know, I like to experiment things in the
studio, but I think live, it's just,
I'm very into just sort of a guitar amp situation.
Strings, I use the X, D'Addario, the XL strings,
and I think it's a 10s, I think, 10s and then
it's like 12s on the bottom.
and so there's a there's a few different
but they're they're like my go-to strings they they
seem like the ones that break the least for me anyway
um so they've been they've been great and
um yeah and uh this is a Blues Junior like tweed amp that i use
and uh it's been my go-to amp
I don't know what I'm doing.
I got it a long while ago and it's just like a, yeah,
it's a perfect combination, you know, both fenders, it does the thing.
With the amp, I've got it as a, yeah, I really like
the reverb sound on this amp, it's got a lot of stuff going on,
I just, I really like the reverb, it's not like a shim,
it's just a nice reverb, generally I keep the gain quite, like,
don't really have much gain going on, one thing is, especially
with this guitar is just rolling off the treble, because, like,
it's just super hot as a as a sound so i
and then yeah bass in the middle you know and yeah
middle's on about five and then
but i i really do roll off the treble that's just been from
playing live and then
that's something i've noticed it just comes out really
top end especially if it's been mic'd up
so with the telly i'd definitely dial off the
just treble for sure to be honest with you i have it
on the middle middle pickup this this middle
spot most of the time, and then for some, you go for the,
it's like harsher, but if I'm playing on my own, I'll sometimes do.
Yeah, but generally I have the tone the whole way up,
volume the whole way up, and then just mix between these,
depending on the venue, but like, majority of songs,
it's always on the middle one, or if I'm playing solo,
it's on that one, and then if I'm playing, I don't know,
a more bitey tune, or I accidentally flick it, it's on that one.
I'm more of a keyboard player, you know, so it's like,
when I picked up and I was just listening...
To records, I sort of just started playing with my thumb,
and that became a thing.
Thank you very much.
So I just, yeah, I play with my,
kind of my thumb and my finger, like, occasionally with
the picking, but it's just the way I've got to,
the guitar responds, you know, it's like
I find it much more, I feel like the pick kind
of disconnects me from it in a weird
way, but I want to,
I've done it a few times on records and played with the pick.
When I'm playing live, I just prefer to play with my thumb, you know.
Thanks so much for watching.
