Ottawa saw its lowest voter turnout in 23 years
Oct 29, 2026
I'm here in Gloucester Southgate,
the ward that saw some of the lowest voter turnout in the recent
municipal election.
An election that already saw the lowest turnout in more than 20 years.
Residents here had a few ideas for why that may be the case.
I think there's many reasons but mostly nobody came to
knock on our doors or explain their policies or programs.
I feel the pain of like just being unable to get a job just because
there are tariffs and all these things like that.
So I think because of these things,
Things like elections and all that,
they're just going to take a backseat for me.
We only saw one candidate, was our councillor here.
We didn't see anyone from mayor come around.
I didn't see the guys canvassing, you know.
I usually like in my eye,
I like to think I'm very well read in politics, so.
I didn't see a lot of push for that at all.
And nothing in the mailbox, which was kind of surprising.
Jessica Bradley won the award with around 70% of the vote.
In an email to CBC, she says she's disappointed by the low turnout
and that her team made significant efforts to connect with residents.
Residents here who did vote say they're surprised to learn
many of their neighbours didn't show up to do the same.
