All right, people are remembering the life
and legacy of labor organizer Dolores Huerta
after her death at the age of 96.
Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers Union
with Cesar Chavez.
She continued marching in protests
and working with activists well into her 90s.
Fox 4's Amelia Jones has more
on how she is being remembered.
Hi, Amelia.
Hi there, Heather and Casey.
Beyond her trailblazing work,
Dolores Huerta is being remembered
for her unwavering dedication,
personal sacrifices, and selflessness.
Tributes are pouring in to honor
the life and
legacy of Dolores Huerta.
The labor leader and
civil rights activist died Wednesday
at her home in Bakersfield,
California, she was 96 years old.
In her lifetime, she helped
establish the National Farm Workers
Association, fought for women's
rights, and defended equality for
all.
A great humanitarian,
a great person of love and
compassion, a person that fought,
a person that stood up, and
a person that never, never gave up.
Hilda Ramirez Duarte met Dolores Huerta
on a number of occasions.
The two exchanged numbers after a run in at the airport.
Duarte says whenever she called Huerta, she was always eager to help.
I felt that she was sincere
and very passionate about what she was doing,
and that she really cared.
She wasn't motivated by money, she wasn't motivated by fame.
What motivated her was to do justice,
to have justice for the people that couldn't otherwise
speak up. Her dedication to the work
is a reason Duarte says Huerta didn't come forward about
allegations of sexual abuse at the hands of Cesar Chavez,
co-founder of the National Farmworkers
Association until earlier this year. She kept working, she kept working
because she knew what needed to be done
and her personal things didn't matter at the moment.
What was matter, what was at hand and that she took care of.
And I think that's why she waited
so long. In addition to her trailblazing efforts
to make change across the country,
she was a mother to 14 children.
On the Dolores Huerta Foundation website,
the family asked for privacy while they grieve, saying in part quote,
we know that many of you around the world share in our mourning.
And we will be following up on plans to recognize
and celebrate her incredible life
and legacy that includes people here in North Texas.
The city of Grand Prairie posted on social
media with photos of Huerta's visit last year
during Hispanic Heritage Month and seeing the
street named in her honor.
The advice that she gave us was to get involved and stay out,
work, do what you gotta do and vote. And this is the time to do that.
A roughly $35 million project is underway
to open the Dolores Huerta Peace and Justice
Cultural Center in the Central Valley area of California.
The foundation hopes to open the doors in fall 2027.
