What's old is new again. Physical media is having a major comeback.
In fact, you can browse a new video store
and a new magazine shop right here in the Twin Cities.
No, it is not 2002. We're talking 2026.
Shane Wells is checking them out for us this morning. Good morning.
Very excited to be coming to you from a video rental store.
A story we've heard a million times. They're gone.
They're going away. They're starting to come back.
Sierra Parham joins us. Owner here, Saturn Video.
New spot, Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis. Tell us how you got
to this place. I know you started doing pop-ups a year ago,
but what inspired you to start that?
So it was around 2023 when Video Universe closed down
and that meant the end of video rental in
the greater metro. And I just thought that was kind of horrible.
So I tried to figure out like,
how can I start making this a thing again without doing
a big store as a first-time business owner?
So clearly you do these pop-ups. I'm gonna guess they're popular.
Yeah, we do open streets a lot.
People have been really jazzed seeing us there,
and that's usually how we get small
enough donations where we were able to
have rent available for this place. And you said, by the way,
that these news of this store opening
has spread well across the country.
Yes, one of the people in our building told me that
they had family in New Jersey find out about
our rental store, which is bonkers.
And this is exciting because we're sticking with physical media,
but this time turning to magazines.
We're at Inkish Magazine Shop in Saint Paul,
Bobby Maher with us.
Okay, take us back about opening a magazine shop. I'm sure
a lot of people were like amazing and others were like, what?
Right?
It's amazing and it's crazy and it's all of those things.
Kind of the better part of this past year,
had the idea in my head, I've visited a number
of places around the world
and often going into these shops was really an inspiring place
for me, but I knew we had nothing like it here.
And so kept looking into more
and more what it would mean to do that and bring a lot of
these titles from all over the world here.
And then I was fortunate enough to have
this great little space open up next to Stepwise
coffee in St. Paul
and it's just a really perfect pairing with the two of us and so
yeah there's sort of a new home for magazines here.
So what kind of magazines are we talking?
It's really all kinds of magazines there's a lot of art
and design there's a lot of food magazines
because I love food magazines
and they're beautiful there's a lot of fashion but there's
also a lot of sports there's a lot of literature
the thing that kind of ties it all together is
just beautifully made things that people put a lot of time
and effort into and that's kind of why I
love magazines so you get your coffee get
your magazine yep sit down it's a perfect Saturday
Sunday morning I agree with you so much thank you
so much for the tour we love it 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. is
when they're open here again Inkish Magazine Shop back to you guys
