Breaking news in Spain where one high-speed
train rear-ended another train that was stopped
at a signal. Officials now confirming at least 64 people have died.
This is the second major
train crash in Spain just this year.
Marianne taking us through this developing story.
Right the death toll really does continue to rise
and officials fear that number could get
even higher. In addition to those who have
been confirmed dead at this hour at least 80 people
have been injured. You're looking at a live shot at the scene in Spain.
You can see several cars
have derailed and have gone down that embankment there.
This is on the line that connects Madrid
to Spain's Andalusia region.
We know that from the rail operator Adif that happened at around
nine o'clock local time between two high speed trains,
state-run Renfe, as well as the privately
owned Iryo train. According to officials
who are familiar with this investigation so far,
it was the Renfe train traveling in the same direction
as the Iryo train that slammed into
the back of that train, which was stopped at a signal.
It's not clear at this point why,
but you see the aftermath there.
A very messy scene with trains just down that embankment.
We know that there were more than 500 passengers
in total traveling on both of those trains.
Majority of those who were killed were on the Iryo train,
the one that was stopped at that signal.
A lot of chaos there right now.
We know that the president of Spain saying that first responders
are doing what they can to help with this investigation
but primarily to get those who
were injured from that scene.
It is quite a large scene as well as you're looking at that this
morning. This just comes months after another deadly crash
in January near Almodóvar in Cordoba.
In that case about 46 people were killed.
This is the largest high-speed rail line in Europe,
the one that travels there through Spain.
So a lot of attention on what happened here. Also the fact
that this is the second deadly train crash in less than a year.
Condolences coming in from all over, including from the European Union,
offering their help right now.
Also, all Spanish Cup football games have
been cancelled out of respect.
Looking at the aerial footage here, though, David,
it's going to take a while for first responders there
to get through all of those derailed trains
and also all of the twisted metal that has been left behind
as a result of this high-speed collision.
Quite right, Marianne.
With two deadly train crashes in just a year in that country,
major rail safety questions.
We're looking back live at the scene right now in Spain.
You see the derailed train cars falling down an embankment.
Air ambulances have been seen coming and going,
ground ambulances, dozens of them as well,
as authorities continue to monitor what is an ongoing emergency scene.
