Loudoun County Public Schools is putting a strategic pause on hiring.
This comes as the district is facing
a declining enrollment, but the move also
raising questions about how staffing
changes could affect schools and students.
Our Maureen Umeh live in Broadlands
with the latest this morning. Maureen.
That's right. So this announcement
was made by the superintendent yesterday,
but for families hearing about it, of course,
they're concerned about what this could mean
for staffing at their children's schools.
So we talked to some people this morning.
you'll hear from them in just a bit.
But again, this announcement about a potential hiring freeze,
and keep in mind, this is not a full hiring freeze,
but a potential one. Coming from the
superintendent Spence yesterday,
he says enrollment is expected to drop by about 1,500 students next
year and falling up by about 2,000 this year.
With few vacancies, LCPS wants to avoid filling
positions that could be eliminated.
The district hopes to reduce staffing through attrition rather
than ending employees' contracts.
Lauder now is reporting that the hiring pause is in effect
through the rest of the school year,
but that will not affect hiring for the 2027-2028 school
year. The board is also beginning budget talks,
and one option is consolidating some western
Loudoun schools. Board members have largely opposed closures,
and there are no plans that
have to be approved just yet. Now, separately,
the board is also reviewing attendance zones for 12
eastern Loudoun elementary schools.
That could change where some students attend, but it's a
separate process from school closures.
Here's what one mom we spoke to this morning had to say.
That makes me concerned, for sure.
I have a child that's in high school.
He's got a couple more years left.
So making sure we've got adequate educators, it's important.
You know, I grew up here.
I was a Loudoun County public school kid as well.
So I know how important educators are.
So that does concern me.
So the school board is still working through next year's budget.
But as I said, there are no plans to close any schools just yet.
They're hoping, again, to just put
a pause on hiring and figure things out.
But, of course,
we'll continue to follow these developments here in Loudoun County
and bring you the latest as it happens.
Back to you in the meantime.
