Yeah, guys, the FBI says that federal agent was off duty
and was driving home in a bureau issued vehicle when they shot
and killed that suspect who was allegedly firing a gun
into a homeless encampment in the area here in East Pilsen.
Now, as we get more details into that deadly shooting,
we also understand there are more questions
that are still being asked on behalf of city leaders.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office has now identified
that suspect as 27-year-old Oscar Corrales,
who the FBI says was here illegally from Venezuela.
The FBI says Corrales was taken into custody
at the southern border in 2023, but was ultimately released.
Fox News also reporting he was previously arrested in California
and released from custody despite an ICE detainer.
The FBI says its inspection division will continue looking
into this deadly shooting.
But 25th Ward Alderman Byron Siccio-Lopez is now calling
on the Illinois Attorney General and the Cook County State's Attorney
to conduct an independent investigation into this shooting.
In a statement, he says in part,
we still don't know what led an FBI agent to fatally shoot
a man in Pilsen on Monday, but one thing is certain.
The FBI and its own inspection division cannot, under any
circumstances, conduct a thorough, credible investigation of itself.
Siccio Lopez is also asking Chicago police to preserve all evidence,
including body camera footage and any witness statements from that day.
He also laid out the questions he wants answered,
including what prompted the shooting, why the agent was still allegedly
aiming at Corrales after he was already on the ground, and whether
the agent was acting alone or part of a task force operation.
Siccio Lopez is also calling on the city to review its work
with federal agencies, starting with CPD's task force agreements.
guys back to you.
