The parents of a Minneapolis nurse shot
and killed by federal immigration agents are
now publicly demanding answers from the Justice Department.
Nine months after their son's death,
they say the federal government is still keeping
them in the dark.
Michael and Susan Preddy spoke out Tuesday
for the first time at a news conference.
They say they haven't gotten any meaningful updates about
the investigation into their
son's killing, despite writing directly
to the attorney general back in July.
And they're accusing federal officials
of protecting the agents involved.
The federal government went on TV and lied about Alex.
They tried to slander his memory
to cover up their crime. Not only was it wrong,
it was shameful, unfair, and unacceptable. We
want to clear our son's name.
We want the world to understand who Alex really was. We
want our son's killers brought to justice once and for all.
Alex Preddy was a 37-year-old ICU nurse.
He was killed in January during the Trump administration's
immigration crackdown in Minneapolis.
Video of the encounter shows agents wrestling
Preddy to the ground and disarming him
before he was shot.
The footage contradicted initial claims
from federal officials that Preddy had attacked
agents while brandishing a weapon.
Minnesota investigators say the Justice Department
initially agreed to share evidence, then stopped.
The state is now suing to get the rest of the file.
Preddy's father had a direct message
for the federal prosecutors involved.
My message to Dan Rosen and attorney Todd Blanch,
look in your heart and do what is
right.
Share the evidence now so prosecutors can follow the facts
and hold these men accountable.
Do your job and stop shielding Alex's killers.
The Justice Department argues it's not required
to turn over evidence to state investigators
before formal legal proceedings begin.
It also says communication
with victims' families generally comes later in an investigation.
Preddy's family says they're still waiting for basic answers,
including information about
the agents who shot their son.
No charges have been announced in his death.
